That is a fine looking stand. How do you intend to clean the glass? I'll be following this one.

wow nice skills on the stand. and it fits perfectly? nice

hows the heater and water flow going to work?

Probably with a small sponge on a stick until I can make a micro-sized magnetic cleaner.

Yup, fits perfect. Now I have to turn a similar one for the hood

As for heat and flow - ninja.gif

looks a little less then one gallon.
just give us the diameter and height we'll figure it out =)

It's 7" in Diameter by 8" High

Pretty damn small. The filtration system is going to be challengin but I think I have a good plan.

Perish the thought!!! That's the wussy solution. wink.gif Certainly would be easier though. sleep.gif Nope I am going to engineer the dog-dookie out of this until it resembles a ink pen designed by NASA.

Per chance is this a vaise from Wal-Mart? biggrin.gif

I have a similar tank sitting on my bench at home waiting for me to have the time to get it together.

I will be following this thread closely smile.gif

It is indeed a Wally-world vase. The optical clarity of the glass isn't the best but it is better than most I have seen. It should be a nice challenge to put together.

Most people I have worked with have never seen cords coiled up like that....works great in my opinion

Most people I know havn't either. It's a trick I learned from an ol' boy back in my construction days. You never have to worry about tangles, knots or kinks doing it this way.

No updates yet. Been busy with other projects. In truth, I am less and less happy with the optical clarity of the glass the more Iook at it. I will probably press on with it. I am thinking of making it a macro-pico.

-Prof
badfish816
my vote is to stick with it. at least for uniqueness. i am curious to see how everything is designed.
Weetabix7
I planned on doing something similar to this at one point.
I was gonna keep it in a sunny window and make it a windowsill pico lit only by sunlight.
I had planned on just keeping small Softie frags in it and maybe some Sexy Shrimp.
Never got around to putting it together though, still have some equipment sitting around in the basement somewhere...
Jamo
Tall lid...can hang a mini powerhead from it. Lighting i'd go for leds include a heat sink and fan into the lid too.

I have had that thought as well too Weetie. The idea of using natural light appeals to me. I have a good windowsill that would work. That is still on the short list of how I handle this pico.

meh, LED's are overkill for what I am trying to do. If I don't go sunlight then I will probably incorporate PC's into the lid. Thats why I haven't made the top for it yet. As for circulation, I have that licked. wink.gif

-Prof
jgoldsney
Ok spill the beans....what are you planning for circulation.....
biggrin.gif

I have 3 options that I am looking at right now and I am quite tossed as to which route to go.

Option 1) air lift (simple but I am concerned about the salt creep)

Option 2) Small powerhead hidden inside/behind rock work

Option 3) Use Small powerhead to make a tiny DIY canister filter

If you have found a better way I am all ears biggrin.gif
DHaut
blow through straw every couple hours. win.

All right, all right. I hate to see equipment in my tanks so I am designing a custom rock wall that will conceal the pump. I plan to try to get away without a heater, but will have provisions for it just in case. I am leaning towards macros only with some small snails and some sort of cool crab or shrimp.

I have one other idea I am fiddling around with that I may try too this weekend.

Your idea is actually pretty good D since this is a macro only pico. The carbon dioxide would do the macros good! Why don't you try it on your tanks and let me know if your macro growth increases. wink.gif My bet is that you will pass out before you see any growth! tongue.gif

No more pics yet - everything is on paper at this point. This past week and the weekend was uber busy so I have not got beyond that phase yet.

Okay. After filling this thing with water and putting some stuff in it it is obvious that the optical clarity of this thing is horrible. You get a real bad fish-eye effect when you are trying to view. But, I hate to give up on anything so I have placed a Hydor Mini heater under the sand and a Picotope HOB filter on it and put some macro in it. I plan to use it as a propagation area for some red macro I got from my LFS but that my Turbos mow down faster than I can grow it. I also have a bit of Caulerpa in there as well. Lighting is from a 6500K CF bulb for what I hope will achive maximum growth. I plan to just sit back and see what happens with this thing. I will continue to post pics as things start to fill in. There is also a small frag of Zoas and one polyp of Anthelia just for fun.

I will be starting a new thread today for my micro reef! 4.5 inches square, drilled with a overflow and closed loop. Watch for it!!!

Now on to the pics!

Not the most attractive thing in the world right now but we will see what happens with it.

Hey D,
My Halymenia is starting to get a real intense red color under the daylight lamp I am keeping it under. I wonder if the higher kelvin bulbs make them tend to lose that bright coloration? No orange tips yet but definately getting more red.

I'll try and snap a pic later for a comparison shot.
