Very true. Don't forget about Titanic, which also carried such a rating, yet look at what it got away with. Or National Geographic. Or Man v. Wild.

Update time: I was going to take some pictures yesterday, but there was the start of some nasty algae, and I didn't want photograph evidence. I think that my bulbs are starting to go. They were approximately 6 months old back in September when I got them, and despite the tank being algae free (other than bubble algae and my macros), the tank is starting to show the tell-tale signs. I'm going a 5g WC tonight to help stave it off. What sucks is that I'm saving for my vacation right now. Not sure what I'm going to do about the lights. I might just do more frequent WCs and start having a lights out day once per week.
Militant Jurist
Ok, back to the shenanigans. So how about all of those tea party-affiliated female candidates winning primaries last night?

Oh, and also in the world of shenanigans, how about this game:

Be very quiet, I'm hunting tewwowwists.
Militant Jurist
Bioload-wise, how does a chalk bass, starry blenny, sixline, a pair of o. clowns, and a cleaner shrimp sound in a 29 plus sump?
DHaut
doable, but def. pushing the max.

That's what I was afraid of. Maybe if I add a bit more macro and run the Reef Octopus skimmer again it would bring it a bit back from the edge? Oh, and the clowns are just little tikes still.
DHaut
i'd just do it and keep your eye on nitrates.
Militant Jurist
That sounds like a plan to me. I'll probably add the pair of clowns first, and then after a while, add the shrimp. That way I won't be subjecting the shrimp to a nitrate spike, should there be one.
Militant Jurist
I still haven't moved anyone yet, but that's on the agenda for this week. I have one other idea to run by ya'll. I haven't put much thought into yet, so I'm still looking for a proof of concept help here.

With the demise of the 75, and the fact that my home office (with the 20L) is being transformed into a guest room for the year or so, I have a nice big tote and return pump begging to be used. With my 29, I have the 10g sump, which holds equipment and not much else. The tank has a double drain, with one on the left and right of the back wall. They drain independently into the sump.

Here's the thought: Could I divert one of the drains into a rubbermaid, and either: (A) use a bulkhead to overflow into the 10g sump with it's return pump; or (cool.gif use the second return pump in the rubbermaid, and have it operate independent from the sump?

The only problem I could see with (cool.gif is that there's the possibility of the water flow being uneven in the drains. They are both the same height, but water being what it is, I can't say that both drain lines drain at the same rate.

The reason I want to use the rubbermaid is to both provide additional water volume to the system, and to finally have a real fuge, rather than a sump/fuge.
Militant Jurist
I'm disappointed by the lack of shenanigans in here. Henry, I think you might need to pick up the slack for everyone else, since you were crowned King of the WL for the day.
DHaut
oh umm yeah fuge sump rubbers. lots of rubbers.
Militant Jurist
Yes, lots of rubbers. Wouldn't do to have mini-me's running around. Wouldn't do at all.

I vote overflow back to the 10 gallon, then return pump from there. The though of trying to adjust flow into and out of two different tanks makes my brain hurt.

Gettin a new birdsnest coral tonight, in trade for some flame algae. Haha DH, the algae is the gift that keeps on giving. wink.gif

There's quite a bit of "in other news" today.

1) I need to order new bulbs. dry.gif The bad algae is starting to get a bit crazy. A WC is needed as well.

2) I pulled a great move yesterday. I had thought I had a house guest staying with me for a week, starting Friday. Turns out, it was starting yesterday. I'm glad he called to let me know he was on the road, or I'd have come home to a surprise. blush.gif laugh.gif

3) My passport should arrive by mail today! The plane tickets have been booked, so now all that's needed is to pass the time until I leave.

4) The new/upgrade phone I ordered from Verizon on 30 May still hasn't shipped. I thought I was getting it on the 23rd of this month, but now it turns out it won't ship until that date. I hope the bastages use overnight shipping. Pretty sure they said they would, but it's a cell phone carrier, so all bets are off.

I love great one liners from the Supreme Court:

"Section 3(B), as it currently exists, does not authorize the Board to create a tail that would not only wag the dog, but would continue to wag after the dog died."

New Process Steel, L.P. v. NLRB http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1457.pdf at p. 14.

Oddly enough, it's a Stevens' opinion, joined by Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia, with Kennedy, Ginsburg, Breyer and Sotomayor dissenting.
spanko
Is this a case about treason?
Militant Jurist
And in that vein, I just found another great one from Scalia:

"One cannot know whether a takings claim is invalid with-out knowing what standard it has failed to meet.6 Which means that JUSTICE BREYER must either (a) grapple with the artificial question of what would constitute a judicial taking if there were such a thing as a judicial taking (reminiscent of the perplexing question how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?), or (B) answer in the negative what he considers to be the “unnecessary” constitutional question whether there is such a thing as a judicial taking."

Stop the Beach Renourishment, Inc. v. Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1151.pdf at p. 11.

I should have a new phone on Monday, after a 3 week wait for it to ship. Of course, Verizon/Fedex refuse to be efficient. I won't be home at the time of the delivery, and Verizon requires a signature. So, the logical thing to do would be to allow me to pick it up at the shipping center, without them bothering with the futile delivery. But noooo..... apparently Fedex has the capability (they claim) but Verizon requires a delivery attempt. wtfbbq

So, now I have to wait until Monday night, until the carrier takes the package back to the shipping center after the futile delivery attempt, where I can go pick it up. Thankfully they stay open late and they are just up the road from my house, so it's not out of my way to pick it up. What makes it so inefficient is that I don't even have to have a door tag to pick it up at the center. I can just give them the tracking number and my ID. Can anyone tell me how that's any different security-wise than me doing the exact same thing BEFORE they waste time, fuel and effort in a delivery I just told them was futile?

Looks like General Petraeus is becoming the new version of Chuck Norris. When things are getting tough somewhere, they send him in. However, the crazy thing about him taking over command from McChrystal is that it's technically a demotion for Petraeus, since as CENTCOM Commander, McChrystal reported to Petraeus in the chain of command.

The move could come back to bite Obama in the ass. There have been rumors of a potential Petraeus 2012 presidential bid, though I'm guessing it's just that: rumor. However, should it be true, and should Petraeus do for Afghanistan what he did for Iraq, he would be a nightmare for Obama to oppose, at least on the foreign policy and capacity to get things done.
Militant Jurist
First, a bit of tank news. I think my bulbs are starting to go, because I'm seeing an increase in nasty algae. Until I can get some new bulbs, I'm doing some much needed WCs. I'd been slacking before, so that doesn't help. I'm also going to put the skimmer back into operation to help get rid of as much nutrients as possible.

Second, it is now T-12 days until lift-off (to the Caribbean).

Ok, now that that's out of the way, I need some shenanigans in here. It's going to be that kind of day.

I'll start off with this continuation of the previous discussion of the degrees of face-palming:

Wouldn't it though?

Here's a fun little story I came across today:

Head to the local big-box electronics store and buy yourself: a Panasonic home theater system ($500), an Insignia 50-inch plasma HDTV ($700), an Apple 8GB iPod Touch ($175), a Sony 3-D Blu-ray disc player ($219), a Sony 300-CD changer ($209), a Garmin portable GPS ($139), a Sony 14.1-megapixel digital camera ($200), a Dell Inspiron laptop computer ($450), and a TiVo high-definition digital video recorder ($300).

This is not an endorsement of any of these products. I don’t own any of them (though if the manufacturers are keen to find out my opinion, they can send me some non-returnable demos). But you can fill your shopping cart with these items for less than $3,000. The average American worker needs to work 152 hours to earn that much money.

In 1964, however, the average American worker could buy one pricey stereo from Radio Shack after working 152 hours. My colleague at the American Enterprise Institute, Mark Perry, a University of Michigan economist, crunched the numbers.

Capitalism is BOSS!
Militant Jurist
Certainly puts it in perspective, especially after all of Obama/Pelosi/Reed & Co.'s whining about the misery brought about by capitalism.

Let's have a comparison of what capitalism brings vs. what they want will bring:

Capitalism: a Panasonic home theater system ($500), an Insignia 50-inch plasma HDTV ($700), an Apple 8GB iPod Touch ($175), a Sony 3-D Blu-ray disc player ($219), a Sony 300-CD changer ($209), a Garmin portable GPS ($139), a Sony 14.1-megapixel digital camera ($200), a Dell Inspiron laptop computer ($450), and a TiVo high-definition digital video recorder ($300).

one of my favorite quotes:

"Or look at developing countries...China, India, Brazil. A billion people have been lifted out of poverty since 1990 because their countries moved toward more market-based economies--a billion people. Nobody's arguing for taking that back." - Gary Becker
Militant Jurist
Well, what's his name from the NY Times might argue to take it back, if those improvements get in the way of China's environmental policy. That nut job said that the U.S. should grant Obama dictator powers for a short time, so that environmental improvements could be made without concern for anything else, just like in China. I guess that means that what little freedom the Chinese have been granted recently should be revoked in his eyes, if those freedoms get in the way.

Still, I find it somewhat amusing that he was one of the same nutbags talking about the evil Bush usurpation of power. When it's Obama usurping power though, it's perfectly find.

Then: Oh the horror of Bush wiretaps! It will invade our privacy!

Now: Turn over all of your medical information. You don't need privacy.

Then: Oh the horror of Bush's Gitmo, Bagram, and state secrets!

Now (Obama's Gitmo, Bagram, and state secrets): <crickets chirping>

Then: General Betray-Us

Now: He's a stand up guy.

The list goes on. Feel free to add other good ones. I enjoy them. happy.gif

Haha! I somehow managed to miss that one. It's a very true analogy. Somewhere today, I stumbled across a story claiming to supply the other half of Obama's login on appointing Petraeus as the AfPak commander: since the post comes with a 2 year commitment, it would be tough for Petraeus to retire and run in 2012 against the man who appointed him.

Then: hi, we're the AARP. we cannot reform social security, that would hurt seniors. the current plan isn't perfect but it only needs a few tweaks.

Now: oh hi, we're the AARP again. let's totally reform healthcare completely, including cuts to medicare (sorry seniors).
