Now that I think about it, there are two upsides to today: One, I'll be able to start practicing law on May 10th; and two, I'll never have to do anything quite like that ever again. Haha one of my profs explained it this way: It's kind of like having a kid... you just can't explain what it's like to someone who hasn't had one themselves.

Congrats! I've been trying to decide if its worth it to go back to law school. I've always been interested in patent law, and I was an examiner for a few years until circumstances changed.

Anyhow, certainly an awesome day for you.

Also the tank looks great. Congrats again.

Thanks on both counts! I've heard patent law can be quite difficult, but I know of a few patent attorneys locally and where I grew up that have made quite a nice living for themselves ($200K+ per year)

Indeed I am! Now I can relax about the whole thing. I'm still going to be impatient until I actually get the license though. wink.gif

So, I've got a confession to make. I looked up the results online, and saw my name on the released list. However, I panicked a bit, since it didn't say it was the Passing list. It was just A list. So, I called the Court's office, and had a live human being tell me that I passed. I felt much better after that. I should also find out my actual score in the mail today.

Well, those probably won't be coming, since I'm working for a non-profit litigation center. I'll be the first staff attorney, working under the Executive Director. In a year or two, I'll probably be starting my own non-profit to do related, but different, work. My interest is more in the area of speech, religion, firearms, and search and seizure constitutional rights. However, where I work focuses much more on economic and property constitutional rights. I certainly enjoy the work, but if I were working on my own, it would definitely be 1st, 2nd and 4th amendment type stuff.
spanko
And definitely "for profit" I would assume?

Mine would be a non-profit as well (there are a few perks to that structure). However, it wouldn't prohibit me from taking for-profit cases on the side. wink.gif Besides, even non-profits pay salaries. tongue.gif

Good to see you are one of the "good" conservatives that is not worried about the "evil" profits as the leftist, socialists are always screaming about. Nice to know you are a person that cares about others as well as making a good life for yourself.

Yeah, it is odd that the more conservative and libertarian folks are less concerned (positively or negatively) about profits than the leftists are. I took a bit of a pay hit compared to what I could be making with a firm, but the work is trying to move the law in a better direction, and the hours are pretty good too. It's pretty much a 9 to 5 job, rather than the 60 or 70 hours most new attorneys at a firm work. That leaves me plenty of time to pick up private cases when I so desire. In fact, there's already a private case waiting for me once I get my license!

To borrow from Winson Churchill, Capitalism is the worst form of economics, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
spanko
I like Churchill's, but how about Milton Friedman,

“What kind of society isn't structured on greed? The problem of social organization is how to set up an arrangement under which greed will do the least harm; capitalism is that kind of a system”
Militant Jurist
Good ole Milton. happy.gif

laugh.gif That is fantastic! It reminds me of a book I read a long time ago (can't remember the name) where people who were too smart were distracted, people who were too fast were handicapped, the too strong were weighed down, etc. Sadly enough, that's where we're heading (See Obama's recent comments about certain people having made enough money, and only those who do "good" will be "allowed" to continue to make that money). In that kind of world, the cuter wife will be given a black eye, so that communism can continue. I'm sure the new guardian of women's rights (Iran) would approve.

Haha nope, not yet anyways. I'm not sure if it is the standard gift anymore, since I see a great many lawyers running into court with an expanding folder tucked under their arm instead. My work is more of a motion and appellate practice, so I won't spend much time in court in any event. Apparently, there is some kind of bar passage gift being given to me by.... well, a person with whom I have a complicated, but often very close, relationship with.

Well, even if there was some old case law, I'd find a way of distinguishing it so that I would be found not liable. wink.gif Plus, there's the good old first amendment, which usually requires some sort of showing of malice. I'm not the malicious type, now am I?

Wait.... don't answer that.

How is Dad doing?

As am I! I was a bit concerned that it could go the other way... but it instead seems to be the beginning of a new chapter, rather than a re-visitation of old one.

Dad's doing well! He's off the blood-sugar meds, and the doc cleared him to go back to work a week or so ago. He's still taking it easy, only going in to work for a few hours at a time, and leaving if he starts feeling tired or stressed. He still has to go through therapy and isn't really allowed to lift all that much, but so far, so good!

The stress issue has me a bit worried about the above subject. When I was with her before, my parents didn't always take too kindly to her (mainly my mother). Through all of that, it seems to have put a stress on my dad, because of my mother always having something to say about my life. I was going to keep this off the radar for a while, but I'm going up to my parents for mother's day next weekend, and she'll still be in town that weekend. If I end up doing something with her again in that town (and she's already said she wants to see me again before she leaves), it's going to be rather difficult to keep everyone else in the dark.

Oh man! It's been a long time. I think I trumped opy on how far i am in this thread.
Of you want congress to do something about the allergies, you have to sneak it in into something like they do everything else. Like allergy controlled Viagra. You can vt your hard on and clear sinuses all at the same time.

laugh.gif If you just read through the entire thread, I think someone should give you a cookie. It's getting to the point where reading the entire thread may constitute a crime against humanity.

Combining hard ons and allergies... that's something I'm sure a lot of politicians could get behind. After all, I'm sure Bill Clinton would love to be as clear headed as he was hard! laugh.gif

Thanks! And indeed it did! Friday night was a good time, and it looks like we're officially dating (again). Since I was in my home town, I had to finally let my family in on things. My mom was a bit surprised, but she seems ok with it this time. I think she figured out why they were kept out of the loop til now, and so she couldn't really be anything other than cool with it. The only thing that sucked was that after we officially got back together, she had to leave again because her vacation was over. I might be working on an excuse for a vacation myself this summer though. wink.gif

Oh, and I get sworn in by the Ohio Supreme Court today at 2.
