When i was in the bahamas, im almost certain that it was the fire coral they said if you touch burns you quite badly. I would pick it up to check it out.

Yeah, that's the nematocysts. From the accounts I've heard, they are a diver's nightmare, because they think that are "just another coral." Those puppies can leave a sting that lasts for 2 days to 2 weeks!

Yeah, I would definitely be fragging it. From what I've heard, it's a good grower. I think it's the branching kind, which kinda sucks, cause I'd love to have it encrust a bottle. The LFS has one, and it's FANTASTIC.

If you had mentioned this before vacation I would have shipped you some back from St Thomas lol. It was all over the place. My brother-in-law got too close to the rocks and the current pushed him right up on the fire coral. He had a huge welp on his arm the rest of the day but he said it didnt hurt at all. Of course I am the same way with jelly fish. I have been stung so many times but all it does is put small red spots on me then they go away. The fire coral in St Thomas encrusted alot.

Oh sorry MJ, they dont have Christmas coral down there. They only have a few SPS, a couple of LPS, fire coral and macros. Christmas coral are Indo-Pacific.

I've heard horror stories about people getting fire coral in their tank and it literally killing everything it touched and it being almost impossible to get rid of once it secures to a rock. You will have to cut off the pieces of rock it is on and chuck it and if you miss any it will just grow right back. I'd avoid fire coral personally unless you are building a dedicated tank for it.

I hear the medicinal purposes are good though. A co-worker pisses you off so you rub fire coral on the toilet paper. He will be using a bidet the rest of his life.

Hm...... well, I do have glass from CM to build a 15 and a 7.5g. This might be the excuse I've been looking for.

On the bad news front, my luck with green chromis continues. I come back today, and he's no where to be found. I hadn't seem him the day I left, but the night before he was out and eating. Maybe he's just hiding, but I'm not holding out hope. I think I'll just hold off on any other fish until I can get my chalk bass.

On the positive news front, my tanks seem to have done just fine with being alone from the 23rd until today.

No fish stuff for Christmas at my place but I got plenty of gift cards and some Blu-rays . I go shopping tonight!

Yeah it is. This trip was one day longer than my longest. My pump on the 29g was sucking air and the DT was full of bubbles, but it looks like a no harm, no foul situation. I'm going to need to come up with some kind of ATO before I take another trip that long.

I posted a rough draft of my DIY ATO using a relay, a float and an old laptop charger somewhere in this forum. It was quite easy. Once built I just used one of those DIY plastic cases you can get from Mouser or Radio Shack. Then you just hook either a dosing pump up to a jug of RO/DI or you can hook an air pump up to a 1 gallon sealed jug with a hose going from that to your tank. The pressure from that would just push water into the tank. Want me to find it and post it?

Sure, that sounds great! I've seen some decent deals on air pumps lately, so it seems like it could be an inexpensive project.

It's good to be back home. My cat missed me, that's for sure. Christmas was good. My youngest brother got a boxer puppy the day before christmas, so my parents' house was a bit crazy! Hopefully your Christmas went well! Now I get to begin the fun of unpacking and getting ready for work tomorrow. I've got quite a bit to unpack and find new homes for. Some of it requires a bit of work on my part (building frames, etc) so it's going to be an ongoing process.

Oh, boxers are soooooo cute! Sounds like fun was had by all.

My Christmas did go well, thanks. I'm off to walk a dog in a few, then I'm gonna take the kids to see the big tree. I figure if Richie took his crew, I must take mine.

Here is a crude drawing and an even cruder pic of the electronics. Mine at the office has an air pump pumping air into a 3/4g jug and another hose from the bottom of the jug to the tank. The pump creates preasure in the sealed jug and forces the water out the other hose to the tank. Both hoses are going through holes drilled in the lid. Be sure that the hose form the pump is not in the water in the jug, have it stop just inside the lid and be sure the hose going to the tank is not submerged in the tank water or you will just siphon the water out of the tank back into the jug (been there done that lol).



the A/C in is on the right and the A/C out is on the left. The relay has 8 contacts total but I am only using 4.

Good stuff, Opy. I'll have to take some inventory of what I've got available and then put together a plan of action. Should be fun!

Good to hear! Haha yeah, but it's OK. Mine went pretty well. Lot's of work to do around the house now, to put a lot of new things to use.

Other than that, I'm just waiting to set up a second date still. Given schedules and holiday-related stuff, it's looking like it might not be until the new year. Tis what I get for meeting someone right around the holidays, I suppose.

Well, I think that I'm going to order my chalk bass soon. LiveAquaria has them back in stock, and I don't have any travel plans coming up. I think my second green chromis is officially a goner. I don't know what happened to him. I haven't noticed any problems in the tank, and I haven't found any bodies. If he jumped, my cat probably got him. Before I get the bass, I'm definitely going to put some kind of netting over the lighting fixture to prevent hardwood surfing in the future. I'm going to take a look at what LiveAquaria has on sale for next week, and maybe pick up something extra.

I came to see who the lucky girl is for tonight. I leave disappointed.

Sorry about the chromis, but a big YES to the chalk bass.
