WHOO HOO posts in the 4th digit.
When you gonna go over and wet the old monkeys back bro?
Have you ever figured out how your gonna enclose the back / top plumbing of your tank? Has the drains got any quieter after beign up and running for a few weeks? I sure know mine did. But then it only ment that I had to tinker with the gate valves to adj the flow of drain to the return pump.

The old monkeys have always been welcome. I was talking about adults in the same way that Willie Wonka talked about adults. THOSE kinds of adults. wink.gif

Yeah, my drains have gotten much quieter. Still not silent, but I figure once I put a proper enclosure around the stand, it should go away. Now, it's just background noise.

As for the top/back, I think I'm just going to use plywood and box it off. I'm going to use some kind of netting though, to make sure that anyone who tries to jump just gets knocked back in. I'm contemplating using window screen, unless someone else has a better suggestion!

Oh, and I've been putting some thought into my future stocking. I think I'm going to get the pair of chalk bass in January, and the Starry Blenny sometime in March. I don't want to get any fish in december, because I'll be gone for quite a few days around the holidays, and I don't want new fish to be forced to go a few days without being fed.
ap123
Your plan for timing the stocking of new fish sounds great. smile.gif

And Willie Wonka is always cool, both versions. I don't wanna be an Oompa Loompa, though. tongue.gif
thecowkid
I dont wanna be onna THOSE adults. Can I be Slugworth? He looks like a guy in the know.

I think you should make a slide of some sort. So if yer fish jump then they will take a slide down to the fuge. WOO HOO! I have seen folks use the eggcrate stuff and just make a vertical wall from the top rim of the tank to the inside of the hood. This way it will hold itself up. Then you have no need to build a frame to hold the screen.

Thanks!

I was a much bigger fan of the original version. The Depp version was a bit too dark for a Willie Wonka movie. You don't have to been Oompa Loompa, but remember, that the schnozberries taste like schnozberries!

Haha I like the slide idea! Maybe put a loopdiloop in it, so they have a rollercoaster ride as well? I like the eggcrate idea. Eggcrate + window screen sounds like a good plan to me! Not to mention, less work. tongue.gif

Yeah, that's true. I just grew up since being a wee little kid with the original movie, so that new one just didn't compute. I won't turn you into one, but if Richie's brownies turn you into something, we'll make sure to put you through the juicer and get you back to normal. tongue.gif

So, here are three reef-related questions:

The polyps don't seem to be all that well extended on my acro. Does it need more flow?

Is this an encrusting or a plating monti?

Oh, and what kind of coral is this (the one on the right)? I'm guessing some kind of monti.

Oh, and what kind of coral is this (the one on the right)? I'm guessing some kind of monti.

First, i can see polyps.
second, some acros just naturally have very shot polyps. but you should check you water anyways. wink.gif

your monti is definitely different from mine. i think yours is probably a encurster, but i could also be a plater because its growing off of the plug

def. a monti. and i can tell you for sure that that one encrust. wink.gif
Militant Jurist
I was just worried about the PE because it's nothing compared to my green slimer. Then again, I know the green slimers are known for their wicked polyps. wink.gif I'm not so worried about the water itself. It's not quite on the receiving end of the flow the way the slimer is. The acro is placed more in the intake draft of the flow, rather than the output area.

Yeah, the green monti seems to be confused about what it's doing. Time shall tell!

I really like the encrusting monti. I wonder if it has a name..... if not, I'm sure it will get one! cool.gif

So, I've got a bit of a dilemma. In my 20L, the red monti cap at the top center of the tank has been bleaching a bit, and has barely been growing. I think it's because it's getting way too much light for a cap, because the slimer right next to it is doing great, as are the other montis in the tank.

Soooo......

I'm thinking of moving this cap to the 29g. The alk has been consistently within range, and while the calcium has been a bit low (mid-300's), I'm working to slowly increase that number.

What do ya'll think about this plan to move in SPS?

I think it sounds like a good plan. Try it, and see what happens.

No problemo!

So.... I just did a 4 or 5g WC for the tank, and once it's had a chance to get good and mixed in with the tank water, I think I'm going to plop the monti cap in (after acclimation, of course tongue.gif). I don't like adding things too soon after a WC, because I figure there's no sense in adding an additional stressor, as minute as it may be.
Militant Jurist
I discovered today a pretty decent (and free) online log for aquariums. Since this thread has been so much fun thus far, it makes finding test results, or dates a coral was added, difficult. tongue.gif

Therefore, I've decided to start using the log as a reminder to myself, and as a way for people to check the vital stats if they are interested. I have a feeling that there aren't many like opy who willingly subject themselves to trying to catch up on all of this! laugh.gif

Anyways, here's the link if you want to check it out: Barrel 'O Monkeys Log Book

Whatcha think of the placement?

I'm also starting to think that I need more flow. I don't have the money for another vortech, so I'm thinking of hunting down a used K1. I'd put the used K1 where the K-nano currently is located, and then put the K-nano in the middle of the back wall.

Looks like this piece came with some red bugs mate. Poor polyp extension is a good indicator also. IMO, all acros should have good polyp extension if the water chemistry is spot on and there are no pests.

On the plus side, red bugs are easy to treat and the piece will probably color up drastically one the bugs are gone.

+1 I had redbug on my tri-color acro and it could have killed it. I used ReVive Coral Cleaner from Dr. F&S and it worked great with 2 dips one week apart. It is WAY safer than iodine dips too.

Ok now back to shenanigans! BTW I am 35 and still feel and act 18 happy45.gif .
Militant Jurist
Hm... wait, is the treatment Interceptor?

Can I get that stuff at Wally World or a pet store, or does it take a Vet?

pisces4u
Interceptor - heartworm meds for dogs. I'm sure someone has a RC link to the treatment.

Basically it kills all crustaceans, so you'll have to re-home shrimp and crabs for the treatment. 1 tablet for large dogs treats ~300g so you'd use 1/10th a tablet. Take out carbon and if you run a skimmer, diconnect the air feed. You want the meds to pass through all your equipment. Dose the dissolved meds, then do a 25% minimum water change next day and re-introduce carbon and protein skimming.

3 treatments are recommended but sometimes 1 is enough.

Put all the crabs and shrimp back in when you're done.

Something Phishy is going on here...

This is a serious matter that should be attended to!

on the treatment, if its not on your slimer, just use Revive, if its only your Slimer, ask a friend who has a dog to get some interceptor heart worm treatment. this will treat your whole tank with no adverse effects. i did it to my tank and everything (including shrimp) pulled through the treatment. wink.gif

Thanks for the info! Fortunately, I don't have any shrimp or crabs in the tank. However, I don't really have anywhere (other than my relatively new 29g) to use to repopulate the pods in the tank. sad.gif

Also, can red bugs live without Acropora in the tank? Today, I measuring the salinity in both tanks, and I think I dumped a small containers-worth of water from the acro tank into this 29g. ohmy.gif

Well, that's good to know about the Interceptor. Seems like there are mixed reviews about Revive. I just ran to my LFS to see if they had anything. They had revive, but the guy there I talk to frequently said that he's never seen it actually kill off a red bug population and that he didn't recommend it. You've gotta give it to them, because they could have said "oh yeah, just buy that!" I remember either DHaut or DCG having an interceptor stash at one point, so hopefully they can help me out.
