MY IQ sucks

Any suggestions

These were shot hands off the camera on a good tripod with a remote release and no IS. Minimal post processing at defaults to make a raw image a jpeg. The wind was blowing a bit yesterday. The shutter speeds where a little low because it was a cloudy day.

Ya. No eye light. I was on lunch and the light was from overhead. I am trying to get better though and shoot when I can. I know the images will not be perfect.

I have tried shooting at 400mm and f8 which is supposed to give the highest IQ for the Sigma 150-500 but I don't really see a difference in my output.

Maybe it's because I'm a know-nothing amateur, but with the exception of the 5th looking a bit soft on focus (shutter speed too slow for the beak movement?) I think these look great. I might play with the color just a bit to bring out the richness, but I don't see where you could make much improvement in the shooting itself.

ned, what kind of speed were you getting with that overcast?

1/50 to 1/100.
This is what is ####### me off
forgot to turn off the truck... damn

Then focus failure... damn

Finally

1/60 f8 no IS off the truck door with the remote release.

I have decided something about my tripod is not good and I think I am going to try a heavy ball head. All of my clearest shots have been from the beanbag off a vehicle door.

Most of my shots range from truly awful to so so close... damn

I am considering a new body. Specifically a 7D. A 5D Mark II is another option as is a T2i. Any opinions on which would be better for the type of shots I have posted in this thread taken with my XSi

Yes I know better glass would make a much bigger difference but that isn't going to happen right now.

5D mk II, imho. Full frame for the win.

unless you're shooting wildlife at a distance

While buying a FF sensor body appeals to me because of the high IQ losing the 1.6 crop scares me. You can get only so close and it would equal losing 300mm
