Full Version: how long does it usually take for a zoa to open up after fragging?
Nano-Reef.com Forums > Live Stock > Aquaculture

i like fish
like the title says.

does it usually take a few days for them to get readjusted?

i finished fragging a colony of orange polyps into 3 smaller colonys. following directions on here/online. When they were all together, they opened up fairly quickly after the lights come on.... but ive had the light on now for an hour or two and they havent opened at all, i can see a little bit of orange in their opening, but thats about it.

I've had some open right back up after I'm through with them, and I've had others need a couple of days before they get over it. Just keep an eye out for them melting or starting to blacken.

Sounds normal. Definitely keep an eye out for any type of fungus, but they should be fully opened within a couple days.

after you frag it put it in an area of good flow this will help with preventing fungus

A good dip will help promote healing after fragging. Also helps fend off any nasties. I use this for a dip for new and fragged corals:

75% tank water
25% Hydrogen peroxide
2 drops Lugols iodine

Dip for one minute. I have done this with zoas/palys and some lps with success. Haven't tried it with sps yet. Protopalys like Purple Deaths and Nuclear Greens slime up a lot more and look PO'd for a day, but they come out kicking after. This dip has worked well for fighting fungus too.

Thanks for the dip tip Evil. I have a pretty high success rate when fragging, but any tricks of the trade I can try is great. Thanks!
