Thanks nano, I am really digging my new microscope and RO units. Im not so digging my LFS atm. I have now gone through 3 RSB's none of which made it through 48hours. Not to mention I have not seen my flasher wrasse in two days. Im trying to give it the benifit of the doubt but Im pretty sure its dead or in the back chambers.....I dont think im buying anythign from thier copper system again. They have two systems. 1 has all the inverts and Mandarins. The other has a small amount of copper in it. I keep telling them they shouldnt put the scooters on that side for the same reason they dont put the mandarins over there but they just dont get it. f%cking flasher wrasse was almost $60. I got two females coming from ebay hopefully next week and my male is no where to be seen. One of the females will become male but I dont know how long it would take for the pretty fins and color's to develop.

your heater was set at 75 and took the tank to 120 ???? what type of heater so i know not to buy it.
did you train your mandarins to eat or were they all ready trained? ewhat is their favorite food? bloodworms. frozen or freeze dried?
D3monic
Sep 19 2009, 02:37 PM
The heater was some crappy thing I got from a guy when I bought his tank. Its so old I cant tell what kind it was. Thankfully I only used it in a 5gal bucket of rotifers and not a tank with fish. My mandarins like frozen bloodworms. They where not trained when I got them. I had to train them myself.

I figured out why the half dozen spawns I got in the past week where not producing any thing viable. I had the heater and temp probe in the fry tanks sump. I happened to test the temp in the fry tub and it was only 71. Needs to be atleast 80-82 for the eggs to hatch appropriatly. I tossed the heater in the tub instead so I should be good to go now. Rotifers are producing like crazy I have 5 cultures and my fry tub is packed with them. Doing daily water changes on all of them including the tub so things better not crash. Female mandarin is swollen as hell so fingers crossed for tonight

You'll have to swab your eyes and check for rotifers on the new microscope slides! haha Hope you can see again! Great looking tank.
Is it common to be able to tank-raise mandarins? I've never seen anyone do it before.
D3monic
Sep 19 2009, 10:29 PM
no its not common. Very few people have. It is gaining in popularity now that the stigma has been lifted.

Mandarin egg around 10hrs old.

Temp is 80. If it was 82 they would probably allready have tails. I saw the egg twitch under the scope.

my hats off to you for trying to breed these fish. have you any that have grown up? you must have done some serious research about these fish? what do you feed the fry? when you bought the fish did you make sure they were eating prepared food? I'm setting up a 30 gallon upgrade and would love to have one of these. I had one back in the day (16 yrs. ago) and of course it died, but i thought it was THE coolest fish.

my hats off to you for trying to breed these fish. have you any that have grown up?
No not yet unfortunatly. Constant issues. food source crashes and ect.
QUOTE (under the sea @ Sep 20 2009, 11:53 AM)

Yes I did and continue to do. I spent probably 6 months researching these fish prior to setting up my first reef tank.
QUOTE (under the sea @ Sep 20 2009, 11:53 AM)

what do you feed the fry?
Ciliates and Rotifers. The ciliates occure naturally in my cultures.
QUOTE (under the sea @ Sep 20 2009, 11:53 AM)

when you bought the fish did you make sure they were eating prepared food?
They where not eating prepared foods when I bought them I had to train them onto frozen foods. I did make sure they would atleast eat live brine when I purchased them Never concider buying one with the intent of training it if it will not accept live brine even. Live brine will be a fall back until it will accept foods.

Finally caught a spawn on video. I had to cut it short because the other fish think its thier snack time. Speaking of which a wrasse definatly makes things alittle more difficult. Fast little buggars.

Looks like I wont be getting any pics for awhile. When I first put him in he was right next to the tunnel I have for him...I went to set the net down on my desk and startled him. Hes now in the big cave and has allready dug a tunnel =( I tried to get pics and they dont turn out. Hopefully he will relocate. Nothing like a $100 fish you cant see.

Oct 6 2009, 08:11 PM

hopefully he moves out... what i would do is not put much food near him, then hopefully he moves to a different spot where he thinks he gets more food.
also are you going to get new mandarins soon? and how is the fry doin?
D3monic
Oct 6 2009, 08:20 PM
No fry. I am getting more mandarins but I am holding out for the perfect pair. My LFS is calling me every time they get a order in. I am going to pick the prettiest ones I can find. I have seen lots of them alot prettier than the ones I had. There was a male a few weeks ago that was solid red minus a couple blue streaks. Then there was a female several months ago that had yellow fins and a solid yellow face with a blue diamond on her snout. I want to get a exotic pair like that. I resisted the urge to get a RSB. If I do get some it will be from a different store.
