Hey guys, just curiuos if anyone on this forum has tried using one of these eheim 2215 filters without the filter media, but instead using LARGE LIVEROCK rubble pieces within the filter as a biological filtration ??? would this work? I really would like to know as I picked up one off kijiji.com at a really good price and if it could contribute to the success of my reef tank then perfect, if not then I will use it for a freshwater tank..

thanks dpnano for the reply. this appears to be a touchy subject that ppl do not like to answer for some reason, or maybe because no one has really truly never tried it...I did try it out as in my above post and it appears to be working quite well. I will check it in a week as I am sure that I will find lots of little creepy crawly life when I put a light up to the canister..thanks again.

I have an eheim canister that i am REALLY interested in converting also. I have a 3gallon eclipse and I wanted to get rid of the crappy built in filter and I have this Eheim laying around i wanna try this with BAD!
Lemme know how it goes and I'll let you know how my progress is comin along
p.s. here is a pic of it since i just realized this is my first post!

I have been running this for a while now and it is working great. I also have an AIO system that incorporates a refugium, but with the extra liverock with the eheim it is even better as it also adds more flow..I have nothing but positive thoughts about this , but do not use sponge or foam in the eheim as I could foresee a problem if that was used..take it easy

Yeah, this is my only filtration now, and I have a live rock section, and I put some polyester floss in there for now. I accidentally sucked my hermit crab in there when i was getting it started so that lil guy is in there right now lol.

What type of protein skimmer are you using in the filter. I am curious as to what kind you would be able to stick in there and also have lots of liverock..If you got a link for this protein skimmer brand that would be great!!!

I assume roksnacid meant he is also using a protein skimmer, not that it is inside the canister. I have run ac powerfilters full of LR rubble, which generated good amounts of pods, but have not tried this in a cannister.
I have a Magnum HOB that is currently just running empty for more flow, but I am planning to put some rubble in there - I want to start with some new LR to add diversity. Hoping to get some interesting sponges growing in it under the high flow, no light conditions.
I'd like to see pics of rubble that's been running for a while in your canister.

I'm kind of running the same thing in my smaller canister.
How often are you guys cleaning the canister? I have LR, purigen, and filter floss.
