My vote is numero tres because I am just a sucker for that color combination. Flame, right?

Then again, you can't go wrong with any of those three in my opinion.

Hubby votes for the second one, I'm not sure which it is. huh.gif

Ok so in the grand scheme of things ... I have been thinking of adding some new pieces of equipment to run in my system ...

1) Nitrate Reactor: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.asp..._content=DD1711

Either to purchase one or build one ... DIY project baby!!! I have the people that are great with building stuff ... along with my understanding of such a reactor ... that it should be no problem ... and cost effective.

2) Algae Scrubber: I am simply in awe of David Saxby's aquarium ... and have been reading every possible article that I can find on his system ... all the specifics and such. His build of an algae scrubber is absolutely amazing and an asset to his system (according to him) ... so why not try building one of these myself.

3) Protein Skimmer: yes I already have a protein skimmer but I am looking to massively upgrade mine ... OR add a second external skimmer. Not sure as to which one I will go with ... but just throwing the idea out there.

I know this is a feeble attempt to explain why I am doing this ... and by NO means am I trying to compare myself and my tank to Mr. Saxby's (not even remotely close) ... just a never-ending attempt to find out what makes his tank so great.
ap123
I'm confused. (so what else is new, right?) Why would you need the nitrate reactor? Are you still thinking about running a zeovit system? Wouldn't that cancel out the potential need for this piece of equipment?

I think the algae scrubber sounds interesting. Yet another piece I don't fully understand, but if I remember correctly it's about keeping things simple.

Was your current skimmer not efficient enough before you broke the tank down?

LOL, you're always over my head when you get to talking about the equipment--bottom line, your tanks are always great. biggrin.gif
nanoreefnate
NO ON ZEO YES ON ALGAE! wink.gif
sounds like your system's gonna be a monster david. tongue.gif
but a TOTALLY AWESOME monster wink.gif
DHaut
read the algae scrubber thread on here before you make that move. i understand the principle, but it seems like a huge fire hazard/tank crasher which kinda outwieighs the value of the scrubber removing nutrients, imo. Also, who wants to be scraping off film algae into the trash every week? That ####'s gonna stink.

David-
i think David Saxby's Algae Scrubber isnt really an algae scrubber. i think its just a huge macroalgae bed (cheato)
when his tank was TOTM'd i read all his article and it doesnt show any algae scrubber. ill find the link to the TOTM thread when i get home.
DCG1286
LoL ... I re-read the algae scrubber idea ... yeah ... Saxby's is really just a huge bed of macro ...

Nate ... I will check that article ... (again ... lol) ... it's a possibility that it is just mislabeled in other articles.

Anne ... I played with the idea of the zeo ... but decided to bail on it when I got my bill from the only local vendor of it ... plus the bad vibe I got from that crowd over on another website ... So back to my original idea of beefing up my system ... in theory everything should work ... however my love of FISH and corals (especially the SPS) ... both don't really go the all that well together ... too much fish waste that the system can't keep up with ... in short ... dull corals ... which defeats the purpose of the tank.

Haut ... it's a rental. smile.gif lol

time for the FOWLR and the reef system to be separated, I think smile.gif

i had a scrubber, BEST THING EVER, pods + no nuisance algae in the tank, remember to scrape it regularly, try get the thinnest amout of water running over it too, mine was a dish on the top of the tank fed by a pump and dropped back into the tank, was great till i added new sand and the silicates caused diatoms which raped the scrubber. post ideas of what u do im curious biggrin.gif

LoL!!! It's all good ... trying to get it set up BEFORE all my SPS come back ... right now I just got some montis and b'nests ... excellent PE from all of them!
ap123
You're too funny, Dan! tongue.gif Dave knows well he can always come knocking and get coral and dinner here. cool.gif --though I don't have any of those rare, exotic, LE coralz. laugh.gif

In terms of risk to corals, though, the nitrate reactor seems less risky than a zeo system, or vodka dosing for that matter.

Now stop dragging me into the conversation, I'm supposed to be learning quietly over here. mad.gif wink.gif

I contemplated setting up an algae scrubber on my current tank but it's not really feasible without a sump. I think they 'can' work if they're setup correctly. To me it seems like a big as$ fuge would work just as well...although the scrubbers are supposed to host different mat types of algae.

Are you going to dose MB7 on this one as well? I recently started again but I'm going to dose less Vodka this time.

I am going to continue to use the MB7 ... I have the Brightwell's NeoZeo running in a reactor ... so I will use the MB7 for a couple weeks ... then onto the Reef Biofuel again. smile.gif

updated fish list:

1x Yellow Coris Wrasse
1x Blue Sided Fairy Wrasse
1x Yellow Flanked Fairy Wrasse
1x Melanarus Wrasse
1x Diamond Goby
1x Blue Spotted Jawfish

The Diamond Goby I picked up last night ... they have had so many of them sitting in the tanks for the last month or so ... big and small ... The g/f picked this one out as he was the most aggressive out of all of them. He has built himself a nice little cave which he goes in and out of all day ... beating up my wrasses for his fair share of Mysis shrimp. He literally turned over my entire sandbed overnight. Love this fish now! lol.

Going to pick up my of my corals soon ... and maybe bring home a couple more fish ... possibly my clowns. We shall see! smile.gif
