I want a blue-spot, but they are so much and seem to be very susceptible to disease (I could be wrong). I may just go with a yasha pistol pair

ok, so I am thinking about getting a BSJ but I have some questions. I have a small grain type sand, and maybe only 2" of sandbed. do thses guy's need a deeper sandbed to burrow? also what about the size of the substrate? I also heard they are jumpers until they make their burrow. he would go into a 120g with 2 allardi clowns, 1 purple tang, a sixline, a midias blenny, and a sunburst anthias.

I have the yellow head jaw fish, 2" of fine grain sand. As long as you supply him with some small pieces of ruble he will be fine. I have to add some ruble every couple of weeks, he will keep spitting sand, shoring up with ruble and rearranging. A very fasinating fish to watch!

So far my LFS has been giving me small shells and crushed coral, but liverock rubble is fine to. Nothing bigger than about 1/2" to 3/4". They are quit the architect, make sure your live rock is not just sitting on top of the sand or it could get ugly.

They jump. Make sure to have something covering the tank. I found mine this morning in the form of jawfish jerky on the floor. Really pissed me off. He was doing fine until he moved under my derasa and my guess is the movement of the clam spooked him and he shot straight up and out though the netting I had over the tank. One in a thousand chance but he found it.

+1 to the rubble. It doesn't have to be LR. Don't put small frags anywhere near them either, I found out the hard way. There is probably a nice size colony of zoas in the burrow.

Anyone have a BSJ with a scooter blenny? My scooter is pretty passive and has been in the tank for 5 months. He hasn't had any competition and the only other fish are a pair of false percs. Its also a 29 gallon Boicube.

Wonderful fish everyone! Jawfish have always been an interesting fish to me, the biggest issue though does seem to be that they jump like mullet so a cover is a must.

Bonsai I LOVE this pic. I wish it was higher res so I can make it a desktop! My LFS ordered me a BSJF while they are season. He came in yesterday and is super cute. They'll keep him at the store for the 1 1/2-2 months before I'm ready to pick him up. I need to finish his house so I can see if he takes to it there.

nanobuds - if you want the yellow head, ask your LFS if they can acquire the ones from florida. The ones from florida are different from the ones in the carribean(which is most commonly sold in LFS). Only the ones from florida shows the yellow head while the carribean ones have little to no yellow or a dull yellow head.
look at the pictures on page 1... seahorsejl's is the florida varient while gentleben's is a carribean varient.
i had a florida varient like this one pictured with an all yellow head but i lost it, it's a shame being one with the all yellow head is very hard to come by. I do wonder if the all yellow head comes with age but then again the one i had with all yellow head was still small.

different kinds of grains would be best, too fine of a sand gives the fish a head ache. multi-size grain will hold up easier. the fish does use slime to keep the fine sand in tact, but the multi-size grain just makes it's life better.

Your bluespot shouldn't be any problems with your shrimp. My blue left both my fire shrimp and peppermint shrimp alone!
Be sure to provide your bluespots with plenty of LR rubble. The more, the better they like it!

It was remnants of mysis shrimp. It didn't dawn on me to get the camera until after feeding was almost done. It's funny you mentioned him twitching his head around. It caught me off guard and i started chuckling under my breath. you can hear it in the video.

BTW, Kraylen, did you change your mind on the BSJ or do you still prefer the Dusky?

I'm going to have to video him after dinner next time. I spot fed him first and then fed some of the other corals. I guess the spot feeding drew nassarius snails into his house. I just watched him give one nassarius some nasty shoves to push him out of the house as the nassarius tried to climb his way up... then he unceremoniously dumped two nassarius out of his house one after another... to top it off... he then went back in and started ejecting their slime as well. LMAO!

1x 3/4" Tee

and a piece of 3/4" straight pipe. Cut off a 4-5 inches. I didn't really measure, just eyeballed it. The materials, not counting a saw or pvc cutter, should cost less than $10.
