I went over to the tank to take a pic... and he had me LOLing. I provided him a couple more pieces of rubble about an hour ago that he'd since incorporated into his house... i'm going to have to find more lightweight rubble for him.
The rocks in blue are what he went out in the tank and grabbed sometime earlier today to close off the opening to his house... the rocks in red are what he's added to the house in the past hour or so.

Here is a picture of my BSJ. He just finished his burrow when I took the picture. He picked up two poor hermit crabs and incorporated them into his den. It was hilarious watching them try to get away, while the jawfish would pick them up every time. The hermits finally got away in the end. Now I'm worried the rock my fall on him, it looks stable so far.

MedRed did he finally move into the PVC house?? I built one but have not put it in yet.

When i first added him... i trapped him with the house with a dasani bottle with the bottom cut out and holes poked in it. He took to it pretty quickly. I noticed that he was gathering rubble... but really wasn't able to do anything with the rubble because the door of the house was too far off the substrate.
I decided to build his house into the scape this past weekend so that he could do whatever he wanted with the opening. I started pouring sand over it to build it up... and it plugged up the opening. I had to evict the jawfish to get all of the sand out. After I was done moving the house... the Jawfish spent a couple of days hovering behind it in a under a nook in the rock before going back in the house today. That picture is him in the house... I built up some LR around it, covered the opening to the house, and built up the sand. the barnacle is now recessed into the built up LR and sand.

You will find, if you haven't already, that the more rubble you give them the more they like it. I use to give mine handfuls of rubble and it would be gone in a matter of minutes!

instead of buying rubble, i just buy like a .5lb pukani rock and smash it up, man you get ALOT of little rubbles with it with all sorts of odd sizes.

No buying here! I just ask my LFS for some small pieces of LR and he hands me a bag and tells me to pick out what I need for free. Then I take it home and smash it with a hammer and I get all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Anyone looking for BlueSpot Jawfish? Right now, LiveAquaria has 3 of them in their Divers' Den section and BlueZoo Aquatics is having a half price sale on them with $20 shipping for a limited time. If you're looking to buy on-line, both of these vendors are very reputable!

I just got mine today yhj...put some rubble in the front where he can make his home....but the little booger went to the back and has been there for the last two hours =( anyone have this dilema? And if so did he move to the front of your tank? Can't get pictures of him cause he's all the way in the back...hiding....>=\

i'd leave him alone... it seems a lot of people have had their jawfish hide around the back and eventually move someplace a lot nicer.

2 for a 55 would be fine, even if they are both or the same sex. they would live in the same burrow when they are mating or about to
im thinkin or settin up a 40 breeder jawfish tank... can i have 4 different types of pairs in the same tank? im thinkin a dusky pair, a tiger pair, a yellow head pair, and a bluespot pair

That would be too small of a tank for all of those. IMO, a 40 would be "iffy" for a BSJF pair. I think you would have some territorial issues between all of them, not to mention the increase in bio-load.

Back from the dead!!!
I wanted to ask my questions in the "Official Jawfish Thread", so here they go:
Everyone still happy with their JF? Would you buy em again?
Yay or nay for the DIY jawfish house? My tank is perfect for a jawfish IMO with plenty of sand, great rock scape and plenty of room on the sandbed with lots of crevasses where the two meet up so I'm on the fence with the house.
Yay or nay on a QT tank? If yay, 10g okay with a few PVC pipes?
I feel like I had a few other questions but now I can't remember. I'll come back...

I've heard good things about the DIY house but I cant see my jawfish being happy without being able to dig. He is always moving stuff around and working on his house..

I have a BSJF. It is very passive. The only thing that bothers with it is my old yellowtail damsel. Since the damsel sleeps near the JF it will back up to the JF and shake it's tail. The damsel will actually make holes near the JF. Not holes, more like divots. Some times the damsel will actually moves some of the rubble that gets to close to it's sleeping cave.
Best fish in the tank. I also like the pistol shrimp. Diggers are cool.

Hard to say... The tank is big enough to support 2 but the fact that they are 2 different species may cause a problem. Also, I know there has been much debate about this on here, but a BSJ is sometimes refered to as a fish that prefers cooler water. A yellow head is not as they come from warm carribean waters.

They're still happy! Just because he's in a pre-fab home doesn't mean he can't dig.
