Ask jamie, as he is going to do the same now. Biggest thing is to keep the temp down and stable with the chiller.

I actually have no idea. I think one of the members on here has a coldwater tank that is cooled by two iceprobes, but I can remember who.

QUOTE (DHaut @ Jan 19 2010, 04:43 PM) *
sad.gif sorry to hear about the fish. it looked fragile. are there any inverts you could get that are interesting?

I have a decorator crab, some hermits, and a few shrimp in my tank. there's a really beautiful shrimp called a candy stripe shrimp that I've always wanted, but never seen.

Link to Northern European coldwater stuffs, in case you're interested.

I think I just froze my cajones looking at that website. Beautiful stuff! Thanks for the link.

ill ask jamie then. i dunno though i cud get a 100g for like 150$ second hand tongue.gif so i dunno weather to go reef or CW with it
hmm
FindingBlemo
Go coldwater with this tank, and reef with the 100?

Either you or Jacobnano or another NR coldwater person has to keep a stubby squid soon.

They're tiny, and even though cephalopods don't live very long in general, the internet picture population of stubby squid would probably be quadrupled if you kept one.

I saw a crab/oyster tank out back of metropolitan market (west seattle), but didn't take it for fear that it was being cleaned and I'd be prosecuted. I think I made the right decision. That'd be an easy way to do a coldwater tank, get a used one from a grocery/restaurant supply.

There are tons of cool animals you can get at low tide here (as Jacob knows).

I have a much better picture taken by a professional in Vancouver (BC), but it's hanging in my bathroom and I don't want to de-frame it.

They have them at the seattle aquarium about once a year or so.

I forgot to put this in the last post. They often have a basket star in a pico there too:

also, if anyone is interested in doing an experiment, I could try collecting and trading for tropical stuff. I think my license would let me send stuff for free but not sell anything. It might be a good time of year to send puget sound critters. The only downside is that all of the good low tides are in the middle of the night. ick.

Well, I thought I saw that jamie was going to do another cw tank in 5.5gal with an iceprobe................ i dunno.

Wish I wouldn't have sold my chiller now, as I still have a 15gal and could setup a cw tank.
Lalani
Buy another chiller!
dtfleming
Ummm Money, new house........ Need new t5 bulbs and stuff to get the 20H up and running. I could start to cycle now in the basement. Its around 58 deg down there.

That may be, depends on if I'm able to fix my current chiller, which is breaking. I don't have money for another, but I might be able to afford an iceprobe.

Sounds like a good idea, but don't light it, and have as few pumps as possible. I had a ten gallon cw in my 55 degree basement several years ago, and the 96 watt pc fixture heated the room up to 80 degrees!
Lalani
Increased water changes and the cyano growth seems to have halted.. and it might be going away...

Oh.. and pics.

so awesome!
Jamie
you do water changes? that's weird.

awesome, awesome pictures, btw.

so lani. if I were to, say, transfer all my corals to a 10g and pop a chiller on the nanowave... wouldja send me some stuff? just putting feelers out. flower.gif
Jacobnano
Have you guys (Jamie and Lani) thought about macro algae to fight for the nutrients the cyano is consuming?

Jer, I'm the one getting rid of all my coldwater stuff, not lani. Just thought you should know.

I had kelp a while ago, but it died. I don't know if there are any coldwater macros that could compete with cyano. It seems to just sort of smother everything. Eel grass is a possibility. In my tank, even having had the lights out for the past month, the cyano is still hanging on, long after all the other algae (rha and gha) have died. I'm wondering if it's silicates. I wasn't having problems until I added sand, and then it went crazy. I think the sand here is silica based. That wouldn't explain lani's troubles though.

Too bad Eel grass is illegal (ninja.gif), I have this red macro that has actually shown some growth and my tank is pretty nutrient free.

That would make a lot of sense, my tank gets diatoms from the silica in the air, usually in the summer because an in window AC is pointing right at it.

Lani, how often do you feed? Also what is your light schedule?

Yeah. When I had that fish you sent me, I fed the tank heavily to try and get him to eat. The algae/cyano exploded as a result and I've been trying to get the nutrients out since then. I've also been running the lights for a few hours every day so I'm going to shut those off for a while.

Getting the itch for coldwater again, eh? biggrin.gif

If I had more, I'd definitely send you some stuff, but with the algae everywhere, the nems haven't had much of a chance to spread. :/

Let us know how that red macro does!

I don't feed very often right now, since I'm trying to get rid of the cyano. I feed maybe once a week..

Coolz, Lani Lani are you just running a power filter on this tank? Im think that I could use one of the 10gal I have and use a power filter on. With some foam around the sides and back. I think I could get the temp down to like 58deg without a chiller for now.
Jacobnano
Hopefully you are ok with this Lani, I just want to show you the growth I am having with this bright red macro smile.gif

There's no filter on this tank.

Go for it!

lol, I found someone who has a iceprobe chiller to trade with me. So guess what, IM SETTING UP A PICO COLDWATER! Im thinking the iceprobe should be able to bring a 4-5g to maybe 55 degrees with insulation all around the sides, back, and bottom. lol Lalani can I borrow some filtered media. laugh.gif

yeah, yeah, you can have some. None of that dry shipping in 100 degree heat like last time though!
Rambo_
Does anyone know if a iceprobe can bring a 4-5g to maybe 55 degrees fahrenhite with lots of insulation and how much it would cost to run it per month.
Lalani
So I bought 5 margarita snails for this tank and floated them for ~30 minutes. As soon as they went into the tank, they started moving all over the place... Hopefully they are all alive today. fingersx01.gif

55 degrees is a push. I had 2 iceprobes on my 5.5 gal and was
only able to bring it down to around 58 degrees. This not to say
an Iceprobe can not find it's place in a subtropical type tank.
There were times during winter that My tank temperature dropped
to 54 degrees using the dual Iceprobe system. As far how much
per month, I have not calculated.

Just did a water change and sucked out as much of the cyano as I could, but I'll do it again in a couple of days. Also, put the Current Orbit 80w PC fixture on this tank... so much brighter than the measly 20w or 30w that was over it. We'll see what that does. Will take/post pics later once the water clears a little!

Finally sorted out the plumbing and today I added sand and rocks.... so we're officially underway. smile.gif

I will probably change the bulbs out to spiral CF's or 50/50........... I think I might have two of those already. Will check in a few minutes.

Anyway, here we are on day one!

Equipment:
10gal. AGA tank
Hydor Seltz 320gph pump
Current Prime 1/15hp chiller
Magfloat
Alcohol thermometer
Backup Koralia nano if it needs more flow... and a couple of AC hob filters if need be.

Cool idea.
I used large river stones like that in a fresh water tank once and I had a huge problem with waste accumulation between the rocks. Do you have a lot of flow??

I have around 450gph in there.

Alright alright, FTS!

Today after scrubbing rough rocks.... cories are still a little peeved:

Jamie
Lookin awesome. cool.gif sorry if you said already, how long is your photoperiod?
Lalani
Well, it had been only around 3 or 4 hours a day with the lesser lighting, but Daniel suggested that maybe if I increased the light period, the green algae would out-compete the cyano... so I added more light and now it's on from 12pm-12am. smile.gif
