Nem on the left looks like he's grown quite a bit.
Jamie
any babies yet?
Lalani
Not yet. sad.gif
They are growing nicely though!
Jamie
Yeah, me neither. Daniel must be feedin his something special. (where's he been, anyways?) In my defense, however, I had an anemone eating sculpin, which made it sort of hard to feed my nem. You, however... tongue.gif
Lalani
I feed them a couple times a week, probably need to feed more often, but they open up at weird intervals. sad.gif
Oh, Daniel said he's finished with NR. Haven't spoken to him in a few weeks.
Jamie
Sad, I figured as much. sleep.gif

Mine definitely opens up at weird times too. Sometimes I wake up in the morning, and it's open. It rarely opens at feeding time. Or even several hours after. Or I'll see it open and run downstairs, get mysis, and by the time it's melted, the nem is closed again. huh.gif
Lalani
Hah, yeah, same with mine. The little one just popped open a few minutes ago so I fed it. As soon as I finished putting everything away, I walked back over to the tank and the big one was starting to open, so I popped a piece of silverside into that one too.

Come back Daniel..... sad.gif

Hi Lanlan. happy.gif
Lalani
Thaaaaank yoooooou, Jamie! happydance.gif

We worked out a trade and he sent me my beloved strawberry nems, a cute fishy, cuc, and another pretty nem (can you remind me of the name? lol). Everything looks awesome!
An FTS will have to wait until the much needed cuc cleans up the place.

They fishy is quite the curious one.. he was watching me the whole time, but I wasn't able to get a real good shot of him.. I'll keep trying. wub.gif He seems to be enjoying all the nooks and crannies of the pebbles!

Lalani
Fishy finally found a spot to sit in the front of the tank, but I only managed to take ONE pic before the phone rang... my mother has the worst timing. *sigh* He was gone again by the time I got back to the camera.

wub.gif
DHaut
what is it?!
Lalani
It's cute. wub.gif

I feel for the people who have enough and leave, but by staying we meet cool people who do trades for stuff we'd never see otherwise. Ya got some cool stuff Lani.
What the heck is this guy? A limpet? I've got a couple but they never seem to get on the glass so I don't know what they look like "under their skirts"

Jacobnano
Yup that is a limpet. There are other names as well hahaha. <- If you have no idea what I am talking about it fine.

Lani you need a FTS now!!!!!!

Also, you need to teach me how to take tank pics...
Hero
Is the fish a gunnel? He is cool looking. wub.gif

Indeed, there are quite a few good people around here. smile.gif

And yes, it's a limpet. He's the busiest member of the cuc so far!

I really have no idea.. and I don't know if Jamie figured it out either. I like fishy though. biggrin.gif
Hero
Does he have a personality? Like does he follow you and check you out?
Lalani
He's only been in the tank for a couple of days, but he does seem generally curious and not skittish at all. smile.gif
Hero
Wow thats great. I can't wait till i go to cal on spring break biggrin.gif.
arwndsh
We need new stuff for our tank now. Anyone have some stuff to spare laugh.gif

cute fish lani
Lalani
Thanks, A. biggrin.gif flower.gif

Sweet new additions Kim!

Geez, you had a busy week huh?

tongue.gif

Very pretty.
Jamie
Sorry, or the lagging response, I was out of town fore the weekend... no internet!

But yeah, the fish is some sort of gunnel, I wasn't able to nail down a specific species, but I see them every so often. They're always around that size, which may mean that's as big as they get, or maybe they just move out of the tidepools when they grow bigger. We'll see! Any luck getting him/her to eat?

The little nem is an Anthopleura elegantissima, I thought there were a couple on the rock, but I guess not; they move around a lot. rolleyes.gif

I was worried that the limpets would attach themselves to the inside of the bottle and you wouldn't be able to get them out laugh.gif - looks like it went okay though.
Lalani
No problem! biggrin.gif

So it is a gunnel, eh? I'll have to do some research then.. And I haven't seen it eat anything yet. He spends most of his time in the rocks, but when he comes out I've tried feeding cyclops and tiny bits of krill without any response from him. He looks to be healthy otherwise. Just got to keep trying and will try to raise the pod population somehow..

I only see one of those nems on the shell, but I can pull it out and look again. That one is moving around a lot, so you're right about that, lol.

And ya, the limpets were pretty firmly attached to the inside of the bottle, but a few thumps on the outside... er, coaxed them out. biggrin.gif
Jamie
lol, glad you figured that out. For the record, if you're trying to get them off the glass you have to surprise them. Just sneak up, and then push them to the side really quickly. If they don't immediately release, then you'll have to try later once they lower their guard, otherwise it's literally impossible, unless you want to crush them first. wink.gif

Watch out for the elegantissima. Sometimes they climb out of the water and dry up. I have no idea why, but they do, so if you see yours making a break for the surface, please kindly relocate him. smile.gif
got2envy
Wow! u busy bee!! looks great lani wink.gif
I like the strawberry nems <3
Lalani
Found the second elegantissima on the backside of the same rock!
Also, it looks like the gunnel is finding something to eat.. I can see his intestinal tract is fairly full most of the time, but I have no idea what he's eating. I've tried cyclops and different frozen foods, but he never eats in front of me..
yardboy
Maybe he's just shy. My dog will quit eating if he sees me watching him. tongue.gif

Yeah, it was the same here. I never even saw him strike at pods or anything - and he was being kept in that tiny little breeder net! Maybe he's secretly developed photosynthetic abilities. ninja.gif

lol they actually just found an animal/plant. It was a sea slug that has it's own chlorophyll. All it needs is light no food to live. Looks great Lalani, if I got a coldwater set were goona have to do some trading. wink.gif

Probably a symbiotic algae or cyanobacteria in the slug's mantle/folds. wink.gif Lichen is an example of this, its actually a fungus which harbors a symbiotic algae which provides it food.

no no this thing literally can reproduce and its offspring will make chlorophyll. no symbiosis here. here is a link Visit My Website oh yeah its not actually my website i didnt mean to name it that.

well, the offspring can make chlorophyll, but they can't photosynthesize without chloroplasts, which they can only get by eating. So they aren't exactly autotrophic.

true, but it is one step closer. pretty neat i think.

I love this tank, im really contemplating a coldwater tank now
any tips? what is the differencce between coldwater and tropical. i know that the cycle takes longer and well they are cold tongue.gif
gonna be in uni in the uk hopefully edinbirgh where ill be walking distance from the coast to collect
DHaut
whoa, forgot this tank existed.
Lalani
It's still kicking. Just did a water change on it the other day, but still in the process of getting rid of brown algae.. the cyano seems to be slacking off.

You lucky dog, being so close to a source. tongue.gif
Jamie and some of the others can explain the differences better than I.. I'm just winging it, lol.
DHaut
oh hey can I make a pico with an iceprobe and put in some of those small nems and some other things?
dtfleming
Ask jamie, as he is going to do the same now. Biggest thing is to keep the temp down and stable with the chiller.
Lalani
Depends on how cold you keep your house. The iceprobe is only strong enough to pull the temp down a few degrees at best. And if the power shut off, the small amount of water in a pico would warm up fairly quickly. It's doable though, imo.
DHaut
hmm. are there better options? my biggest issue with coldwater is the cost of a decent chiller. my apt. gets pretty warm in the summer though - like 80s.
jeremai
I have a chiller I'd sell you. pick up only though, lol.
DHaut
yeah that's funny lol
jeremai
lol.
DHaut
is the fish still alive?
Lalani
Tomfoolery!

Yeah, I highly doubt the iceprobe would work for that. I found a chiller for a good price in the NR classifieds, try there. tongue.gif

Haven't seen the fish in a very long while.... so no. sad.gif
DHaut
sad.gif sorry to hear about the fish. it looked fragile. are there any inverts you could get that are interesting?
Lalani
Thanks, wish he would have stuck around longer.
As for other cool inhabitants, I dunno, I'm sure there is a variety... I just wanted the strawberry nems. wub.gif
