ya, it all makes sense now...

the way the micro's were sunk in, they looked liked Favia to me. now that everything is happy and healthy, the difference is obvious.....thank you for the Chalice and Favia frags Blue'. i especially appreciate the micros, as they are my GF's new favorite.... tanks boss!

I've got one in my tank that I am "taking care" of for a local reefer after his Regal Tang ate almost the whole thing... So I've been nursing it back to health, but now I don't wanna give it back... Kinda growing on me.

nope...theyre pretty upset becuz ive moved them 3 times, and i have no caves for them to hide under.

i would...err, i mean, did.....

first off, my parameters midday are:

sg - 1.025
ph - 8.4
Cal - 400ppm
Alk - 7

now, i was just reading an article about how keeping a high ph can drive Cal/Alk down quickly....
my Alk has gone down from 10 to 7 in the last week (since the addition of the SPS), but my Calcium has stayed steady @ 400ppm since the tank started....

my question is this: should i dose to get my alk/cal higher or does it matter yet?

edit:
1) my ph is always 7.8 when the lights come on, and bumps up to 8.4 after about 2hrs....
2) i have Kent Tech CB (two part) ive only ever dosed the system twice. Bi-weekly WC's used to keep the Cal/Alk in check, but the SPS just sucks it up....

okay...so i was running my parameters as follows:

ph - 8.4
dkh - 7
cal - 400

when the tank was just Zoa's, Muzhrooms, and one Monti frag the growth was incredible! (not to mention the overall health and color)...the zoa's were growing 2-5 polyps a week (depending on type), and you could watch the Monti grow daily, that was wierd...

But once i added the Acro, i noticed that all the tanks inhabitants had slowed in their growth. i test daily, and w/ no parameter swings, there was no reason for this....so i did some researchin' and found this link: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm in a thread (link posted by Lakshwadeep, thanx!) ....

after reading what it said about the zones and higher tolerences at higher levels, i decided to up my values. i did this for three reasons...

1) I wanted to see what difference it would make in the corals overall health and growth.
2) To protect against the Ph swing that occurs at night in my tank...(since i dont have, and wont be adding, a fuge.)
3) to give myself a little room for slipping in any direction....

i can say that after upping my parameters to this:

ph - 8.4
dkh - 9
cal - 420

all my corals look better than i could have imagined...and no more "bitter-beer-faces" at night...lol

this is the goal parameter:

Ph - 8.4
dkh - 11
cal - 440


(i know that was random but it might help somebody, right?)

i think im gonna let her settle in for the next month. the only new addition should be an emerald crab to take care of some GHA here and there. that, and im gonna mess w/ the chemistry a little and see what i can come up with.....hopefully a hardy enuf tank for a clam in a few months, who knows

got 3 newcorals today!!!!

All two are Leptastrea and one is a meteor shower Cyphastrea. All three came from N-R member bluenassarius.....
(keep in mind, they were only fragged a couple days ago and are still quite upset.)
