and you're putting a tang in there correct?
jeremai
May 4 2009, 02:45 PM
Correct. GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?
Actually, I'm going back and forth on a tang or an urchin/cowry combo. Half the water in this is tap, so algae control is going to be key lol.

Ah man dont put the tango in there. weak dude.
Get some nice wrasse

I got the hookup son.

I have a nice wrasse. And it doesn't eat algae.

Cowries will work it. Get the black ones, they are awesome. I have several.

ooo, what kind of urchin? Isn't it going to be taking all the coralline off the rocks... Non reefers are impressed by coralline.
jeremai
May 5 2009, 03:39 PM
lol, exactly. I think coralline is dumb, and I'm planning on super low maintenance anyway, which means star polyps, mushrooms, clove polyps... basically, there won't be any room for coralline, I'm going for complete coral coverage.
Not sure on the urchin. Maybe a pincushion, but the sand I used is very coarse (read: lots of actual shells) and the urchin would keep picking things up. Maybe a pencil urchin.

i like pencil urchins... i never been tattooed by one of those.

I have two in my 75g, and they are doing great keeping the liverock pretty clean. Only problem I have had is one took a chomp out of the base of some SPS I had (I think it was trying to get to some bubble algae at the base). But I don't think that will be an issue for this tank as you are going for low maintenance corals (the urchins have left my zoa's alone).

Anything to update?
jeremai
May 11 2009, 01:52 PM
No. lol.
I'm waiting till I see bugs to transfer the NW9 over. That's my litmus test, pods. Who needs test kits?

After I get the other tank transferred over I'll order the goods. Still working on a fish list, but corals will be limited to mushrooms, polyps and gorgonians. Nice and simple.

Bah humbug.
And we all know you'll find some way to complicate this 'nice and simple' tank.

And why the fook are you hiding?

I thought you were going to have a big sps in the middle top? no more huh. I've had a pin cushion before, pretty cool.

still WAY too bright outside to get any pics for a few more hours, and everything's still pretty pissed off, but I'll give it a shot later tonight.
re: the hiding, I don't remember clicking the box when I logged in, lol

I'm going to stick with softies for now. A big toadstool right in the center is the goal, not a big tabling acro.

Ohi

If you're still interested in acquiring frags from me, I should be able to send a pack out to you in the next month or so. I'll get pics together for you to choose what you want soon.
(Richie, if you're reading this, I'll have frags for you too!!!

I took out the Polario, too loud. I put in a MJ1200 with the Sure-Flo mod. Flow is fine, but it's also too loud. I need a super-quiet, high flow powerhead, or a way to quiet the vibration with the MJ (the noise isn't from the prop, it's coming from the vibration on the glass from the magnet mount, I believe).

my first recommendation is always a korallia.

Vortech MP40

I spent $250 on the Polario, I'd really like to not buy an MP40.

Are Koralias really that quiet? I need super-silent.

i have two k3's and they are nice... I definitely couldn't hear it over my skimmer.

they are not super quiet. especially once they age, you could here them.

Jun 8 2009, 12:35 AM
+1 to 121a. I would play it safe and get them new, if you went with koralias. I think it has to do with the axle that the propellor spins around getting hit by the propellor.

Ugh, I wish this damned MJ didn't make any noise. Now I have to spend more money on top of the $250 I wasted on the Polario. What a pain in the ass.

what about a couple of 6025's? i haven't used mine in a while but iirc, they are pretty damn quiet.

the stand doesn't allow for plumbing.

I say MP20 its what we have in our 75 (only pump at the moment) and it provides plenty of flow.
jeremai
Jun 8 2009, 12:59 PM
Meh, I'm really not wanting to drop $300 on another pump. Besides, it's a softy tank; flow isn't the issue, noise is.

Koralia.

Jun 10 2009, 04:34 PM
So, will one K3 be enough? The flow from the MJ mod (1200gph) is way more than enough, so the 850 from the K3 should suffice, eh?

I think that would be fine for softies.

One K3 would be a little on the low side IMO. It's not enough in a 40b, and you're tank is taller. One K3 isn't even enough to cause surface agitation over the entire tank because of how soft the flow is. I'd go either K4, or a pair of k2s/k3s. I know the corals don't need that much flow, but in my experience more flow helps keep a tank clean.
They're pretty quiet unless you don't get one put back together right after cleaning. I have a K3 that I cannot get to stop vibrating, I have no idea what I did to it.
jeremai
Jun 16 2009, 04:59 PM
oh. my. god.
This K3 completely blows the MJ mod out of the water, literally. Flow is better, and it's completely silent, and there's no vortex.
