ew, no. home depot play sand.

so I got all the rock out, all the sand out, all the coral out, and half the water. I was going to net the pseudochromis and flush the little bastard, only to realize that I can't find my net.
ugh.
I hope I can catch him later.

Water bottle trap. Dottybacks are so audacious they fall for it every time.

Wait, what's going on??
jeremai
Sep 1 2009, 05:49 PM
two problems:
1. crushed coral
2. punk ass bastard pseudochromis muther ####er (killed the clarkii

)
two solutions:
1. trade cc for play sand (and redo rockscape)
2. catch fish (later apprently, I'll try the bottle trap)
I decided I want a peaceful community tank - jawfish, gobies, cardinals, a firefish and the lawnmower blenny.

Ah, I see.. Good luck with the switchover (and catching that fish)!
I just got some new fishies today.
jeremai
Sep 1 2009, 07:31 PM
yay fishies!
ok, it's still cloudy, but so far I like the play sand. very fine, like oolitic sand. not sure if it's silica or aragonite, but either way it looks good.

For removing fish that you dont mind killing, the mini spear gun is awesome. A baboo skewer in a stiff straw with and elastic attached. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

ok, first time ever doing video, let's see if this works. don't mind the audio, the list youtube provides is crap so I just let them choose for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcANH1VUw4Ihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QsZtpE-J5wthe pseudo is still around for visual interest till I get another fish, but I stopped feeding it like two weeks ago. the little bugger is still fat off fauna though, lol. I have another closeup video of the toadstool forest swaying in the current, I'll get around to posting it eventually, as well as a video of my phyllangia in the NW9 feeding on mysis. yum.
oh and btw, the lawnmower blenny has been mia since the move. poor little guy probably got scooped up with my sand and tossed out.

Looks like you've got some pretty good flow going in there.

too much, I think. the rocks are slowly being dusted white, and the sand is forming dunes. all that's in there is the one koralia, lol.

For being one of the resident photography gurus, there is a very limited number of photos on this thread. Tank looks good so far though....
jeremai

the number of photos in this thread is in direct correlation to the number of corals in the tank.

I like this aquarium, a lot.
Not much has been done in terms of coral purchased, but the ones you've got are AMAZING.
I really like the colorful mushroom rock and toadstool forest.
Also, your rockwork

Sep 17 2009, 02:28 AM
still deciding on fish. definitely need to get the pseudochromis out of there. I'm thinking a firefish, a pair of banggais (I already have the urchin if they decide to spawn, lol), another blenny (bicolor, perhaps). I was wanting a jawfish, but the sand is too fine and the flow too high I think.
I also need to decide on a centerpiece fish. should I take the chance and get a Centropyge eiblii, which I've always wanted? maybe a small tang? maybe no large-ish fish at all, and just toss in every goby I come across and watch them interact. decisions, decisions...
GrandpaFeathers
Sep 17 2009, 02:35 AM
Yeah, I'm stuck in the same rut as you. I can't decide what I want at all for my 50 gallon.
I considered the goby idea, but decided I'd rather have a couple gobies and fish that will actually stay in the water column consistently. You're further than me though, at least you've got a general idea of what you want. I'm clueless.
I've always been an invert guy, rather than fish.
Even though they're common, I kinda want a clownfish pair, mostly because my brother and girlfriend want them.
Edit
That would be cool if you moved my thread down here too, I put it in the nano section.

lol, I sold my camera last month, I'm operating with a little crappy canon p&s.
I had to remove half the water (again) and all the rocks and corals (again), but I was finally able to catch the pseudo.

he will be returned to the lfs tomorrow in exchange for a credit toward either a killer brain or a big chunk of electric blue anthelia. wee!
I also picked up a quartet of pajama cardinals and a sea hare. lol.

If you're still looking for new fish, what about Centropyge potteri? I had one that was awesome most of the time, but it had a taste for clams. So, if you don't have clams, it would be great! They're my favorite dwarf angel, at least, color wise.
jeremai
Sep 18 2009, 12:33 AM
I'm leaning toward a dwarf angel as the last fish. I want to get a small army of gobies in there first though, lol.
I'm also upgrading to one of those disco ball mh lights in the near future, I think. I may nix the angel if I decide to get a clam or two.
obviously I am undecided.

I <3 dwarf angels. Personally, I'd go bicolor as a centerpiece fish, but eiblii or potters is pretty good too.

ugh, I've been looking for blue padina for three years, no one ever wants to ship it - and the one time we tried it melted in transit.

the ginger wants a clam, but I may be able to convince him otherwise. I'll tell him that they can only live on the sand and that the light penetration through two feet of water just won't cut it blah blah blah... if I start dropping random Latin names he'll glaze over and do what I want.

but if the tank is full of gobies, say a good ten or fifteen different species, how will the much larger angel react being put in last? I just got a bully out, I don't want another...

nah, that spot is reserved for a tabling acropora someday, lol. was thinking of a frogspawn and an elegance on the sand though, along with some big gorgonians for height.
I love my pajama cardinal quartet. also put in a few clown gobies today. now that the pseudo is gone the emerald crabs, hermits and nass snails are coming out and foraging during lights on. the tank is alive again!
ALSO did you see my sea hare in the first pic? he's gross in a major way.

it's the sea hare! that thing went through all the algae (bryopsis included!) in exactly one week. now he has no food, and I have to bring him back to the lfs, and then the algae will start growing again, and then I'll have to buy another one in a couple months, and the cycle continues.
