It's a bit early to tell if the corals like it better, but it sure looks a lot nicer. The white LEDs are much more of a cool white than the I4. The fixture also runs cooler and has better optics. The blue display is quite a bit nicer than the green as well.

Time will tell.

I promise I will post some soon - possibly tonight, but it will be a moonlight shot cause the daylights will be off when I get home from work.
TJ_Burton
Ok, so here are some shots of the I5 over my tank. Sorry but I didn't bother to whip out the tripod or use manual settings for this batch. I will care more about photos when my tank is looking the way I'd like it to wink.gif

My room is a mess:

And some corals:

(my new zoas which I added up to the earlier post as well)

It looks really good TJ! That new Solaris looks 10x better and the old one looked pretty good.

My final bulkhead shows up tomorrow and then I can silicone in the overflow I made. I have 2 of the three bulkheads in and plumbed. The third bulkhead is just the return and I have all the parts needed. Hopefully I will have some pics for you to check it out.

BTW how is the orange plate doing? It doesn't look so hot around the edges in the above pic.
TJ_Burton
The plate is awesome. It was just closed up in the pic cause I literally had just put it in the tank.

I was talking about the white skeleton on the edges that you can see.

My LFS had one of those orange plates for $60. It sat in the store for probably 3 months before it sold. I would have taken it home if I had the room. My nano cube is stacked full right now. The 40 can't be ready soon enough!
acropora1981
if yer tank was a lady, I'd take 'er out for valentines day cause she's soooooo purdy.

There is actually flesh there, no skeleton poking through. You can't see anything when it's open cause the pale flesh faces downwards.

I've always been intrigued with fungias, since a lot that die start popping off babies like made. Too bad my tank is only big enough for one cool biggish showcase coral, i'll probably get a scoly.

Aussie Scolys are great - Certainly one of the corals I plan to have in the future. I think I am going to be a little bit more LPS addicted than I was previously. There are some fantastic colors to be had with LPS corals.
TJ_Burton
Some night shots after I fed a few of the LPS.

I regularly reed the Duncans, Plates, Donut, and chalices if they are accepting.
Here are post fed pics of some, and a shot of my one lone florida ric which just looks rad tongue.gif

So many mouths on this thing!

Plates

Red Chalice (it got bumped by the urchin and fell, so you see where it broke and is going to get fragged)

TJ,

I got all the plumbing finished and the tank is running in the basement. I have a Quiet One 2200 on the tank as the return and the thing is TERRIBLE! This is the second QO pump I have had and neither one live up to their name. They are not quiet at all. How do you like the MJ pump? Is it silent?

I have had a hard time keeping the level in my overflow box consistent though. I have the return pump dialed back quite a bit so it is hard to match the drain and return so far. However the system is dead silent minus the return pump.

I never had any issues at all with the QO pumps. I am actually surprised yours is so noisy. That aside, the MJ5500 I am running is very quiet and halls more balls than I expected. My only complaint is that it takes a few seconds to start up - after plugging it in, it just sits silent for 10 seconds or so, then the impeller finally kicks on and starts pumping.

The level in the box should only fluctuate max 1" at any given time. I usually set it so it is just under the auxiliary drain, and when it fluctuates it will dribble a bit into that drain. This way the box is always at its fullest to reduce noise.

Have any pictures of your setup?!

Take a few weeks off and look what I miss...tank looks AMAZING TJ!!

Can't wait to see where you take us with this one...if your past tanks are any indication, it's going to be a showstopper.

As soon as I have pics worth taking I will post them up. wink.gif
TJ_Burton
Sorry for the massive lack of updates...

I am fighting a couple of lame battles at the moment with the tank and I really don't want to post anything up until I have them all in order. It isn't really major stuff, but crap that I think should be dealt with before I start posting more FTS and bragging about my awesome success lol...

I have recently purchased a few corals, a nice Christmas favia and an equally as nice pink eye favia. For all you tang police out there - I also purchased a tiny little convict tang as a part of my clean up crew for the time being. He is being adopted by my buddy Ray (180g) when he is no longer needed in my system.

My tank was having aptasia issues (the rock I used had aptasia on it and it got out of hand) but the peppermint shrimp (3) I added made short work of them, and a couple weeks later I can't find any aptasia in the tank.

I also bought a nem. I have lots of experience with bubbles, and some experience with carpets, but I decided to stick my neck out a bit and pick up a healthy looking Macrodactyla doreensis. It isn't an overly attractive one, in fact it is kind of bleh... but it was not expensive, healthy, and I would rather make an attempt at a nem I have never kept with a less than stunning specimen until I know I am capable of providing the proper care (which I do believe I can).

Anyways - I will shut up for now and give you folks at few photos.

Looks like its finally starting to settle down. Lil' bit of cyano eh wink.gif ? Haha im sure it'll go away after a few weeks. For some reason I have a patch right in the middle of tank...stupid ancient bacteria...so successful...so ugly...

I do feed them, they eat like mad! Hopefully I have to frag them soon cause I want to trade them for more pretty LPS!

I completely understand the "let me get rid of this cyano before posting pictures" situation. I am going through a bout of cyano at the moment and I'm struggling to pinpoint any causes. Just going to give it some time to work itself out. The more I've poked around, I've recently seen that A LOT of others are going through issues with cyano as well (these are in low nutrient systems with a lot of healthy SPS). Guess cyano across the country is getting a little spring fever wink.gif

Coral look excellent. Really diggin' the recent additions!!

divec and TJ,

What salt are you using?

I have fought cyano in my one tank for well over a year, ever since I switched to Reef Crystals. It is the only thing I can think of, as I never had problems when I used DD H2Ocean. I have a bucket of H2Ocean on order and can't wait to start using it again.

I'll answer for him since I know him so well; he uses the Tropic Marine Pro Reef stuff. Supposed to be the bomb, and TM is always really really clean salt.

I used all kinds of salt over the years I've been reefing (IO, Reef Crystals, DD H20cean, NeoMarine) and right now I'm using Tropic Marine Pro Salt. I was thinking that the switch may have had something to do with the cyano as well but it looks like it's just magically disappearing now. Unexplained cyano definitely has me wacko.gif

I've had the best luck with parameters with Tropic Marine and DD salts.

Looking good man, where did you find that photosynthetic fan ? Nice shots of the favias !

I got mine off eBay! It was used (barely).

But you can get one from the sponsor www.bigalsonline.com and get 10% off and free shipping which works out to be a pretty good deal. I am going to get a second one soon and I am going through them to get it. I am still looking for a better deal though cause they also price match and beat it by 5% which could work out to be better.

I actually saw some of the buzz floating around the forums with the new controllers. Looks pretty rad - except I think you need 2 to 3 pumps for the new features to work properly...
TJ_Burton
Alright, time to break the news...

I am selling off my system lol...

Long story short - I have been setting up a recording studio and that is where my time and money is being spent. I literally pay no attention to the tank and it looks shabby. The corals seem happy and healthy as do the fish and anemone, but I simply don't care about it and don't want to have to take care of it. I don't want to spend more money on it automating it, so I am just selling everything off and replacing it with a 90gal cichlid tank. Something I can throw a big canister on and nearly forget about for months on end. At this point it is just in the room as a focal point and for the cool factor. I am not being a responsible reefer so I am converting...

That being said - I am not upset or sad or anything like that. I am sure I will get back into reefing again sometime in the future (as it seems I just can't stay away for long).

Anyone in Canada who wants any of my livestock - PM me about it.
Anyone in Canada OR the USA who wants hardware - PM me about it.

I have already sold my Vortech and Luft Pumps.
