my old college roommate actually made a pretty sweet ring light. it was pretty complicated to say the least but worked just as good as commercially bought pieces.
basically he designed it so that the light screws into the filter threads of the camera. the light source he used was a round compact florescent light in a custom made machined plastic housing. it has a remote ballast in a metal casing with a push bottom for on off operations.
it worked really well for what it is.

Good ones! Though I'm not sure if I want to get into wiring and circuitry.

It's super-duper easy. Take a hand-free headset. Cut the wire. strip the wires. Solder one switch to two of the wires (they're grouped). Solder the other switch to the other two grouped wires. Put the switches into some kind of enclosure. Bada bing, bada boom. Done.

Hrm, I'll see if I come across any.
I think I'm going to make a ring flash add-on this weekend.. would help a ton with bug and eye pics.

Man, this one is quite nice..

yeah, i'm actually thinking about making a ring flash too - unfortunately i don't have a TTL cord or wireless trigger :-/

I already have the TTL cord, so all I really need is the basic supplies and to borrow mom's workshop and tools. I already printed out the measurements and made the supplies list. Just need to figure out the measurements to bend the bracket for the XT + battery grip and I'm all set. So excited.

i'm trying to decide if i want to make 2 brackets (one for gripped use and one for use without the grip) or just make the bracket out of 2 pieces with an adjustment slide in the middle

Nov 12 2009, 01:55 PM
Hrm, an adjustable bracket would be fairly easy to make.. but I never use the camera without the grip anymore.
Edit: Ah, looked at it all again and see the problem with using the grip with the ringflash... I'll probably leave the grip off.

2 extra bends in the bracket..... and I'm lazy.

I dunno, I'll see what I do when I start working on it. Might actually be sturdier that way.

Nov 12 2009, 02:39 PM
is that just for prime lenses?
Lalani
Nov 12 2009, 02:45 PM
I suppose you could use zoom lenses also, but it would be difficult the adjust. The ring light makes manual focus difficult too.
DHaut
Nov 12 2009, 02:48 PM
the bracket would help with letting the flash be used with a variety of lenses, from what I can tell.
andykee
Nov 12 2009, 03:30 PM
yeah, the bracket looks like it will help in terms of keeping the lens square within the hole (i.e. you won't end up catching the edge of the flash in your shots)

Hmmmmmm, found a different version that I think I might like better:

as opposed to:

I'd probably use the same supplies/directions as the motleypixel one, but simply attach the flash to the top like the second one...

Amazon.com, bhphotovideo.com, adorama.com..... search for TTL cord. Mine is off-brand and works just fine.

Heh, I had to decide between black and white zip ties and I eventually went with the whites so they wouldn't show up in any catch lights. Like I said, this one ain't pretty. Next time I'm in the hardware stores, I'll start buying up pieces to make a new one!
