Hi Anne, IMO you should start to build the colony of bacteria first, but this is not necessary. You can do the vodka first without harm.
I am going to continue to post up some of my research as I go back through it until DH tells me enough, stop, my head is exploding.
Here is an excerpt from an article that really hits home what the heterotrophic bacteria does on the reef. I bolded the parts that really hit home with me.
"Via heterotrophic bacteria and microscopic bacteriovores, such as protozoans and meiofauna, the microbial loop efficiently recycles dissolved organic matter (DOM) that leaks from primary producers (such as algae, photosynthetic bacteria, corals, etc.).
Heterotrophic bacteria are mainly sinks as they mineralize more than 50% of assimilated DOM). As shown in fig.1.3b, the microbial loop is responsible for the decomposition of almost all of the organic material reaching coral-reef surfaces. Yet still, the microbial loop supports much growth at higher trophic levels, leaving little to be buried as organic sediment1.16b
Since microbes are R-strategists, they not only have fast generation times but also have large surface to volume ratios.1.16c This enables them to respond rapidly in numerical and metabolic terms to changes in the supply and quality of organic material"And here is the entire article, for those academics that can stand it. It tells a lot more than just the discussion of bacteria but also how the planet works to help give the reefs a place to live.

I would start with the MB7 first. Although I could be wrong, adding a carbon source without increasing the heterotropic bacteria population first could be a bad thing (aka fueling algae growth).
Thanks!

Cool story, huh?

First off ... Quit beating up the woman at the doughnut shop ... is the second doughnut really worth it?!
Next ... Tito (Gotham Aquatics) will definitely deliver if he is making stops in your area ... he delivered salt and the large mb7 amongst a bunch of other things to me all the way out in Queens. His prices are great for anything and everything. Almost like he hijacked a large shipment and pawning them off from his home ... kidding ... kidding.

I know flatworms atleast. He does have good deals. Im lucky that I can go there and look for myself. I will say that I am VERY picky when buying in store.
Also keep in mind that the coral you get from him will not be as "colorful" as the pictures. This was an issue on the local forum.

Adam (divejc) just gave a pretty good review this morning on his order. I dip everything I get for pests, so I'm not that worried about those. But to be honest, the markup in NYC is so much that even if the colors aren't quite as pictured on his site, they're still way better than I could get locally.

I'm back! Didja miss me yet?

Sick girl here today, not fun.
Anyway, D, I can do up to 5 frags. I bought Coral Revive when I was at the swap, is that enough of a dip? If not, I'll have to pass or do less frags. Always a juggling act.
Mmmm, I have no idea about dosing and going away. I assume a couple of days would be fine, more than that I won't guess.
BTW, I did pm Gotham on MR, he's supposed to call me when he knows he'll be in my neighborhood. Thanks for the tip!

Like you said D, I'm really happy with what I got and 4 out of the 5 frags looked better under my lighting. But of course these are 5 out of what I'm sure are a TON of frags.
DT - thanks for the heads up on looking for pests from him. I've been pretty religious about dipping all coral that I get but there are always others who don't and you always run the risk of some slipping through.
The acans are definitely fresh cut frags but considering the great price I figured I'd give it a whirl.

Anne - 5 frags, eh? Sweet - we'll split it 5 and 8 and make the min. shipping amount. I'll see if David wants in for anything and then we'll place the order tomorrow. PM me what 5 frags you want. I guess we'll ship to your place again given that it's hardest for you to meet somewhere, as long as you can keep my frags floating and warm until I get there.

Holy cow this thread moves fast! If you all don't mind me chiming in, I'd like to know if anyone has noticed any difference in zoanthid growth rates as a result of dosing? With dosing reducing nutrient levels to zero or near zero, I'm curious as to how that affects the growth of corals that are usually known as preferring "dirty" water. While I realize that doesn't exactly translate to nitrate and phosphate levels, the two are still related. Henry, I believe that you are or were keeping some zoas in your aquarium? Anybody else?
