andykee
so all this time i've been shooting with the world's cheapest "glass" (if you can even call it glass in quotes!) that's right, i'm still shooting with the kit lens that came with my rebel 2000. it's a 28-80/3.5 pile-o-poo.

UPGRADE TIME!!

should I get the 50/1.4 or the 24-70/2.8L (which will require me to eat ramen for about a week)?

05XRunner
that depends on your shooting style..I do not like primes so I have the L
also what 50 1.4
the Sigma 50 1.4 is better then the canon one. I have owned it and it was a very nice piece of glass..So far most of the reviews back that as well.
SulfurAcid
I love my 50mm/1.8, and Im pretty sure a 1.8 is a cheaper alternative to a 1.4.

BTW, Ramen noodles aren't that bad, lol.

i was looking at the canon model. also, i haven't shot a prime lens in 5+ years, and never on digital (or when i really knew what i was doing)

also, how is the sharpness on the L, especially at shorter focal-lengths? i'm eventually hoping to pick up the 16-35 II but know that it goes soft above 24-ish mm.

yeah, i'm looking for something a little more durable than the 1.8. plus, if i'm gonna spend the money, i may as well get the fastest (practical to own) 50 canon sells.
05XRunner
my copy is tack sharp wide open from 24-70....but I know its not out of the ordinary to get one of them that is not that sharp..I bought mine 2nd hand so i knew I was getting a good copy. instead of playing a guessing game with it.
Orangegsx
If you can't decide get your L lens AND a 50mm 1.8.. they are like 80-90 bucks. You can't go wrong with L glass, But primes are really fun and create some fun effect to the picture, amazing bokeh from the 1.4

This was shot with a 50mm 1.4 at 1.4,, 3 am and no tripod. very clear and collects a LOT of light

This one was with my 50mm 1.8

yeah, do you know what the procedure is (if there is one) to deal with an out of sync lens? i'd assume you can send it to canon to have it recalibrated for a price. is it possible that i get a flat out crappy lens that can't be fixed at any cost though?
05XRunner
well if its new..then you just send it to canon for calibration. if they cant get it right I am sure it would be replaced.
Now I know if you send a lens in for work there is a min fee of about $130 so thats what it would cost if it was out of calibration if it wasnt in warranty
latazyo
andy,

fwiw, I bought the sig 24-60/2.8 in january and I love it

I also have a 50/1.8, but it is nikkor so that doesn't help you any

I honestly think your best bet is to get BOTH the 24-70/2.8 AND the 50/1.8

the 50/1.8 is only $100 and will serve you VERY well until you can afford the 50/1.4

and its not like you wouldn't be able to sell a 50/1.8 everyone wants them that's in the hobby and not looking for the 1.4

ok, so it is (obviously) safer to buy a new lens sight unseen than a used one which is supposedly "good". i'll just think of the extra cost as my insurance policy on it

do you guys have an 85 1.4 or an 85 1.8 at all?

05XRunner
yea got an 85 1.8 and an 85 1.2 tongue.gif
andykee

and I feel is worthless..due to its deisgn and the focus shift makes it a pure pain in the ass
latazyo
now that I have my 50, I wish I had an 85

andy if you're using it for people, look into the 85

i have a crop body, so 50 is 80

now the real question is whether the 28-80 i have is an EF or EF-S lens. hmmmm...
Orangegsx
red dot on mount is ef, white is ef-s

kick ass, didn't know that

it is a red dot. i also figured it out anyways, since it was originally shipped on a 35mm film camera, it HAS to be EF

might be useful:

http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html

about a quarter of the way down, it lists nearly every canon-made lens. some other good info as well.

i'm 99% sold on picking up the L on friday. it's just a shame that amazon is a few hundred dollars cheaper than any of the stores around here, so i'm going to have to wait to get it :-/

O well, only a year or so left, I hope.

Andy, my sensors are crop also, but I still wish I was a little closer in sometimes, the 85 1.8 is definitely on my middle-short list

what are you shooting?
Lalani
My general purpose lens is the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. 100mm f2.8 for macros, 50mm f1.8 for some others. A couple others that never see the light of day, lol.

5D Mk2 > 1D Mk3 IMO

not in my eyes..the 5D II has no interest to me what so ever..its slow and just crammed with MP..and a 5year old focus system that wasnt that great to begin with.
I need pure speed and made for sports.

yeah, for me MP and low light performance > speed

yes but the 1DIII has about the same low light performance up to ISO 6400 that it goes to...It was compared side by side on the canon forums..the 5DII might be a tiny tiny bit better..but then the AF of the 1DIII blows it away in any lighting. I bet if you ever picked up a 1 series you would never want to go back...Ever since I got my 1DII I dont think I could ever buy a non pro body again. It just fits and feels so good in hands.

i know, that's what i'm afraid of. i have zero use for the HD video capabilities of the 5D2, but one of my huge concerns with the 1D line is their size. many of the locations i photograph require a pretty serious hike, and i'm trying to minimize size and weight as much as i can.

what i really need to do is go out and play with the 5D2 and 1D3 and see which i like better. i'm just not sure if the extra $500 to get the better AF and burst speed is worth the halving of the MP in my case.
