The fixture that you get from HD the 500w does not come with a ballast it's straight current. You do not have to buy it if you can get a socket for a 70w or 150w bulb which might come out cheaper on ebay but with shipping and having to wait i'd rather just went and bought it for $15 and i was able to use some of the wiring, socket, reflector and UV glass.
