I checked the ID forum and didn't find anything on this. Got it today with a piece of LR - anyone know what species? It's not a great pic. The algae is a bright orange-red, very small, and not rigid.

it could be an encrusting sponge, are there small holes in it?

Too small to tell - but my guess is that it's an algae just by the way it flops around in the current.

I've given up google searching. Maybe it's some type of algae that used to be green and turns orange without light or when it dies? Like leaves changing colors in the fall? I'm lost.

Ahh, gotcha. Yeah, that stuff died quickly. Red dictyota is a pretty good guess.
