Full Version: 16 gallon Coldwater

Jamie
all you need is a big pump and some pvc! Some sort of intake filter would probably be good, too I don't think you want to be blending up the wildlife. On the plus side - fish smoothie for your livestock!
Jacobnano
Cod smoothie would be nice. I am thinking about one that could be permanent though, like a large glass aquarium with a flow through in it, sitting on the back where it gets sunlight. That would be pretty cool.
Jamie
Pretty cool indeed. Do it.

Claremont is only about 50 minutes from the coast (Newport Beach, Laguna Beach), and they have some great tidepools there. I live in San Diego, but I know a lot about California animals and collecting laws, so let me know if you want some help setting up a cold water tank when you get here.

Newport Beach is a nice place. If you go kayaking in the bay you can find navanax and bubble shells. On the ocean side are all kinds of hermits and regular crabs. I love Newport wub.gif.
Jamie
Sounds awesome!

And, just in case you guys were worried that I had completely lost it and was actually getting rid of my coldwater stuff, I present to you, my new downsized cw tank! It's now a 5.5 aga (no fts at the moment, sorries.)

mini-jim (Jim himself now lives in Maryland)

Downgrading means I should be able to get a few more months out of my chiller. yay!

arwndsh
I was trying to feed Jim and he bit me dry.gif.

You must not be feeding him enough laugh.gif

He doesn't bite that hard though. I personally think you should forgive him. He has poor vision.

Well, what do you know? It's not the one you mentioned, but you sent me on a bit of search, and here it is! I've even been this website before, and I didn't realize this was it. Epiactis ritteri it is.

Jacobnano
Dang. It really looked like one lol....ohhh well.
Jamie
Well, they're pretty similar - same genus. smile.gif
Jacobnano
Oh well....

So how is everything doing? It is all still spread out between tanks right?

Everything is now consolidated into this one tank. (it's a 5.5. sorry I still haven't gotten around to that fts). The 16 gallon was basically just holding jim, some big rocks, and a few anemones. All the nems were moved to this tank, the big rocks were thrown into the woods, and jim sent to live with dshnarw, so no more big tank.

Ah, I remember now. I feel like we should invent a name - Actinia hawkinsii?

You should send a picture to whoever figures out that sort of thing. It could be new, who knows?
Jamie
more work (AP tests) = more procrastination through photography!

Thanks! Not sure what you mean, vignette? The only one of these I put a vignette on was the hermit crab, and I use ps lightroom, though I bet you can make vignettes in regular photoshop too.
animalmaster6
I definetly will!!

friggin amazing. I can't even describe the jump between the boringness of highschool and the amazingness of college. get excited. no tanks at the moment, but I've been tossing around a pretty sweet idea, and if I can convince my parents, it might be developed in the near future, but right now they're not to excited about it.

Ahh I envy you. I can't wait to go, it should be a ton of fun biggrin.gif Oooooh really? At college or home? Guessing home since it involves parents.
Jamie
both, transportation is the hitch. I'm trying to make a pico that can seal up tightly and be put in my checked baggage. I have something that I think will work, but they don't, which is the problem. I say that the only solution is to build it, but we'll see what they decide.

Are you trying to get stuff down there? Or back up here from there?
Jamie
Maybe a little of both, depends on where I can find cool things for cheap, I guess. smile.gif This would be a tropical tank, by the way, I realized I didn't say that earlier, and we're in a coldwater thread here.
AquaticEngineer
Ohhhh, well in that case...... rolleyes.gif
Jamie
though now that I think about it, cw wouldn't be too difficult. If I could automate some sort of feeding system maybe I could even leave it there over the summer. One of the bio profs might like to have it in their room... I guess I'll ask around.
AquaticEngineer
I built my refridgerated auto feeder for under $60 final cost. Hit me up if u want more details, its pretty easy once you've done one and as long as you can find a great deal on a dosing pump that is programable for 7 days a week. I picked up 2 dosers shipped for $72 on ebay and got the mini fridge for free.
Jamie
yeah, that would be awesome. Still don't know if I'll do it yet, but its always good to have more information. People are always selling their mini fridges for really cheap at the end of the year, so that shouldn't be a problem.
AquaticEngineer
Hey Jamie, I'm going to go collecting at Barview on April 20th. There is going to be a -1.7 tide that morning biggrin.gif Got any pointers for the area? Or things I should keep an eye out for? Any other places along that area of the coast I should check out while I'm there?

I went collecting in Barview last year and got some pretty cool rocks. I collected in the big pool you will
see as you drive up. Good hunting

Thanks biggrin.gif

We are going to start at sunrise just south of Tillamook and Garibaldi, in Oceanside, and then head back around Tillamook bay to Garibaldi and and Barview.

Here's the thread I have going about the trip if you haven't checked it out yet.

Any scouting reports for me or things I should look for?
Jamie
yep, barview is a great place to get invert-encrusted rocks. good luck!
