The question is, what would you put in a nano tank that is set up with a surge. Tank is 5 gal. and I need some ideas on inhabitants. Needs to be tropical not cold water.

What is this surge you speak of? I guess you could have some polyps like zoanthids.
look for info on reef crest corals. any of those would be fine.
couple that would be good are acros and montis, provided they're the thickly plating/branching kind, and the massive varieties of brain corals, mainly the maze brains.
basically, you want species that can take the impact of waves on them and be fine, since thats essentially what a surge device is made to mimic.

how's the surge going to interact with the aquascape?
tigah's surge pico had a myriad of livestock because his surge wasn't as much biotope as part of the eco-process imo. i.e. it was part of the flow dynamic rather than the specific niche biotope (high-energy wave zone that dshn is alluding to) that he was re-creating (at least that's the way i saw his setup as).
is the surge the central theme? i.e. high-energy wave niche/zone so you'll be concentrating on the reef-crest and top-slopes of the reef, and maybe some high-flow middle zones, e.g. spurs & grooves.
or is it a surge dynamic that creates a chaotic flow-thru and high/low "tides"? this will allow for a greater choice of livestock imo (like tigah's setup).

Another thing to consider are bubbles. They're not a problem if the flow is high enough around the corals that the bubbles don't linger, but if the flow is low they will cause problems.

Thanks everyone, I never considered the reef crest zone. I think thats what I will try for. So I will read up on this zone. Feel free to add any types of corals that you think would do well in this zone, but are kind of different.

The bubbles would attach to the corals leaving them partially exposed to air. Not good for many lps.
