Im setting one up this weekend. Ill post pics later.
Niz
I got my up and running in the beginning of October and haven't been able to do much with it due to work and money. But here's what i'm rockin with
AGA 55g (durr, of course)
AGA black pine stand
ESU 65 g needle wheel skimmer
AGA 20l sump (not in full function yet, waiting for more funds to get a better pump)
So now i have a marine land bio wheel HOB filter with no wheels on it.
48" ESU Lunar Aqualight Deluxe Series Double Linear Strip
PureFlo 2 50GPD RO/DI Unit
100 lbs of Fiji Live rock
and two damsels, lol.

on order as of today:
HYD PUMP KORALIA 2 UL 600GPH (x2)

But the good news is that i have the next few weeks off for vacation and i'm going to be putting double time into this bad boy. Here's some pics. Going to work on the aqua-scaping a bit today.

I have a 20 gallon AGA, but I also have a 55 gallon AGA with a few African cichlids left over. I'm thinking of converting the 55 gallon to salt, but I'm trying to avoid the whole drilling & sump deal. I don't think it will be feasible. Anyone have a 55 without a sump? Basically, I'm taking my 20 gallon & turning it into 55 gallons.

^ That's my current 20 gallon & that's how I want the 55 to end up looking, but without all the fancy equipment other than the fancy lights. Heh! Is it possible to do it like I've done with the 20 gallon or should I just go out & get a whole new drilled out tank? I'm trying to go as natural filtration as possible & minimal equipment. Hmmmm.... (^_^ ) ??

Thanks Kraylen. I put in some LR last night, I gotta snap some photos and start my build thread.
Kraylen
Excellent!

I tore down my 55 here in AZ and an starting two of them in CA I think.

Here's my 55. Been goin for about 2 years. 260 watts of pure pc's, pic just actinics.

The tangs have been in there for about 2 months do to a friend breaking down his tank, and they will go into my 135 once it's setup.

Nope, just an odyssea off ebay. I switched out the bulbs though for current usa bulbs.

EDIT: Still 4 bulb though, 4x65
Kraylen
Sick man, hows that light holding up for you? I've been really wanting to pick up the 4x65 + 2 x 250MH Odyssea hood and do evilc66's ballast upgrades. 760w of light is an insane amount, I could run just the 500wMH... either way it would be SICK growth for whatever I do.

It's been doin great actually, I don't even bother using the legs it came with though, just rest it on the tank. When I first got it one of the actinic bulbs didn't turn on but after a few smacks it worked and still does to this day.

I also have a 250 watt odyssea on my 30g, have had it for about 7 months. It came working fine except the moonlights, just one of the wires came out- no biggie though, just some electrical tape fixed it. Didn't have a problem with the moonlights on the pc's though.

The fans are pretty damn loud for the mh though, pc's are about average I would say.

EDIT: the bulb that comes with the mh is a POS as well
Kraylen
yeah thats the only think I hate about MH is the loud fans, but then again all my equipment is loud... sump... skimmer... lights, all noisy as hell.

the former tank

no longer in existance

Here's mine,
I'm runnin:
55g display
20g fuge with LR and Chaeto
skimmer: reef octopus 350 External / BH-100 hang on
2x 150w metal halides
2x 4ft NO actinics
66 lbs of LR in display (probably more than that now)

as for fish I currently have:
A spawning pair of occelaris clowns (1x black and white 1x normal)
1x Western Australian lawnmower blenny
1x exquisite wrasse
1x sixline wrasse
And i want to add a potters angelfish and a long nose hawk

Here's the pic

edit: put up a more recent photo
Kraylen
How long is your light?
Thunil
my light fixture is just about 4 ft But the ballast for the left bulb just blew, i'm gonna replace it tomorow, that's why its dark on half the tank and also why I've crowded more corals over to the right
Roc!
I have a 55 gallon sump/fuge, does that count to be part of the club?
Kraylen
nope!
PBUEHH
i have two 55gals, both are empty. and when i get my own place im going to connect them through a sump. Side by side along a wall.
kamikaze_fish
I have a 55 but it's fw so it doesn't count.
Kraylen
You're right, it does not.

Somehow I missed this thread unsure.gif Here's mine, old-school, not drilled, no sump, HOB filter and HOB skimmer. Ran VHO lighting til January when I went to 6x54w T5's. Running about 1.5 years.
kjhnstn
OK now you've done it! I bought a brand new 55g (stickers still on it) off craigslist a couple of weeks ago for $30 to use as a Discus grow out tank. Was thinking about a BC29 for a reef tank, but after seeing these amazing reefs I'm going to to do the 55 reef. Now I've got to find a 30g long and make a sump/fuge, get an overflow box,pumps,lights...... OH NO! the sickness begins. My first reef build

I'm about to move my 54 corner into a double 55. 55 display with 55 sump on the bottom shelf of the stand. Thinking a 4 lamp nova extreme as lighting, a small return pump to keep flow through the sump low and a couple of Koralia 3's for supplemental flow in the display. Will be a very mixed reef: Softies, LPS, some easy SPS, and a BTA. Mostly to show off the Maroon clown pair and the sixline wrasse pair.

I just finished cycling mine . But hope it looks as good as yours does when I'm finished. Your tank is proof old school gets it done and that you don't have to break the bank with high tech gear to have a superb looking tank!

55 Gallons kick ass.
slick fish
awsome tanks
i got a 55 it started as a brakish water 3 years ago and about 2 years ago i slowly converted my two spotted puffers into full salt .i traded my lfs the puffers for a couple of damsles and a tomato clown . i have added live rock to the lace and tufa rock that was in there when it was brackish.so its been running full salt for like 2 years
Kraylen
Nice conversion!
slick fish
you think? i wish i had mo corals
how do i make a link to my tank thread like you have

thrive (adjective) (throve,thriven, also thrived)
Very lively and profitable; blooming; a term often used by nubz looking for excuses on why they have something in their reef that does not belong there.
"The tangs in my 40 gallon are thriving", "All 13 fish in my pico throve until I forgot to feed them one day"

Damn Kray, you've started a trend. There are all kinds of new 55's poppin' up in the Big Tank section. I plan to start on my double 55 this weekend. I guess I'll have to start a thread for it too.

Are 55's the new 40bs? ohmy.gif

Here is my 55gal tank. It's in its beginning stages, but I'm having a lot of success taking it slow and keeping everything clean!

kray wat do you think of this overflow
Kraylen
I think it looks good man. I DEMAND MORE PICTURES OF THE TOOLSSS
slick fish
man... so many tools so little time, but you think the over the rim overflow is ok iv got it testing in the bathtub and its very touchy i move the ball valve or the hose from the pump a little and it over flows the tank i workin on a screen so nothin gets sucked up in the pipe
Kraylen
Everyones 55 gallons are looking great.

I just added a TEK 6 bulb T5HO light and this is one of the best choices for out 4 foot beasts. Im amazed at the light it puts off.

My only problem is now that I have the high light, Ive become a light whore... meaning my new black eggcrate top is reducing enough light that I am in search of a new, less restricting top for my tank.

Then again I'd rather lose a little light over having 500 bucks of wrasse jerky on the floor.
slick fish
t-5s i think is the best lighting out...dont want no jerky i got a crap load ov plexi over the back of mine!!!! i use a shop light with 2 6500k bulbs from lowes and my shrooms like it i guess? my green striped one just split and when i got it it was just a cut off head from my lfs's dt allmost all my shrooms i got that way .i can get more variaty that way fo cheep!
