looks nice to me...where'd you pick up the hydor light?
Ando
Nov 5 2008, 03:01 PM
i picked it up at marine dreams.. some people have said it wont work for a light in my fuge? lol
Nosey
Nov 5 2008, 03:17 PM
What is the "K" rating of your light, and what colour is it?
In your pick of the light at the bottom of the box, it says " For illumination & Decoration" but nothing about plant growth!
IMO maybe you shouldn't have put the peppermint shrimp in on the third day, but i don't know much about them.
Ando
Nov 5 2008, 03:18 PM
it does not have a kelvin (K) rating on it lol i figured i would see if this light worked. Im not to sure if it's going to. here there website for it
http://www.hydor.it/en/products/show/5i got the blue one
Nosey
Nov 5 2008, 03:29 PM
I'm no expert, but i would guess it's not going to work. Again from what i know ( correct me if im wrong anyone) you should have a light with a kelvin rating, and it should be a full spec white light for growth, not blue, but again i'm no expert!

lookin' good
nice set up with the rock, the little thing on it is probably a feather duster. Those are good to have.
As far as the peppermint shrimp, you should have waited till the cycling process was over. It probably won't last very long. Better to wait till all your levels have settled and then combat the aptasia.

I'm taking back the Hydor light.. i dont think it will work. So I'm going to try to find something else.

Good stuff, I like all the colour in your rocks. How much rock do you have in there ??
Ando
Nov 7 2008, 12:14 AM
i think about 35lbs of LR and 20lbs of live sand.
Nosey
Nov 7 2008, 12:16 AM
Nice!
Ando
Nov 7 2008, 12:23 AM
ya i got it pretty cheap... about $1.60 lb.. got it from a guy locally! Def a good deal..
how do i find a link to your 29g bc? what do u have in it for your filtration?
Nosey
Nov 7 2008, 03:50 AM
go to the search window on the top right of this page and either type in my name or "New 29G BIOCUBE (My first tank ever)"

Maybe a little low on the "K" rating, but better than you last light..lol...I see that you chipped the paint off the back in a square shape, but have a round light fixture, why not have the same shape cover? Does light seep out the back? Also you might want to remove the rock out of the back of your Fuge, the LR in your display should do the trick!
Ando
Nov 10 2008, 09:26 PM
good idea on the rock in my fuge...
as for the paint... I wansn't really thinking i took it off a few days ago and didn't plan very well. I got the bulb and everything today from home depot and got the cake pan in my kitchen haha! not much light seeps out the back.
I hope it will do the trick. I don't know what I was thinking on the last light i had.. hahaha
Nosey
Nov 10 2008, 09:40 PM
lol...It should do the trick, if there isn't much light seeping out the back, then who cares what shape it is.
Ando
Nov 10 2008, 09:49 PM
I could always put something over it right? maybe spray it with black paint..
I will wait and see. if it doesnt grow I will try putting paint on the back of the glass. but i think it will work.

Do you have your Fuge light on a alternate time cycle from your main tank? If you do you shouldn’t see a heat issue.
Ando
Nov 10 2008, 09:53 PM
no i dont have a timer. yet.
So your saying when i don't have my main light on have the fuge light off.. and when the main light is off have the fuge light on?
whats a good time for all my light.. I have 2pc 1 actinic and the other is the reg one?
Nosey
Nov 10 2008, 10:47 PM
Ya so my lights are on a 12hour run time, but that might have to change depending on how much algy growth you get. I get very little growth in my tank, even on a 12 hour cycle. I get some growth on my glass, which I can keep up with my Mag-Float. My lights on my main or display tank turn on around 8:00am, and at the same time my Fuge light turns off, then the same happens in the evening. My main lights turn off at 8:00pm, and my fuge light turns on. I have a sunpod light, so I don’t have actinic’s, but if you wanted to simulate sunset, and sunrise, then just subtract one hour from your main light cycle. I have kind of done the same with my set up, but it’s not as good as yours. I have blue, and white LED lights to go with my MH, and when my main MH light turns off, and my Fuge light turns on at night, I keep the white & Blue LED lights on, then after an hour my white LEDs turn off. It’s my may of having a sunset, and sunrise, not as good, but what can you do!

You should really get some timers, especially if your going to have coral in your tank.
Ando
Nov 10 2008, 11:29 PM
thanks for the info.
Some time this week I'm going to get some timers. Seems like it will help tons!
hmmhmm
Nov 11 2008, 12:16 PM
ando,
did you swap the bulbs in the hood? put your attinc bulb on the switch that kicks the fans on...so that way it will help with the temp before the brighter bulb kicks on...(as long as you run two timers)

Nov 11 2008, 12:21 PM
I used a halogen under the counter light I found at homedepot for my tank it has worked well as far as I can tell. The one reason I can think of for putting LR in your fuge would be to keep hte chaeto from making it's way into the 3rd chamber and clogging your return. I really don't think it would become a detrius trap as long as you have critters in there eating the detrius.

no I didn't do any mods to the light right now. I dont have the actinics on very long for it to get to hot.. It's on for 1 hour.

It hard to see if it would work I cant find any specs or anything on it. Does it have a K (kelvin) rating?
Ando
Nov 11 2008, 11:23 PM
Do you guy think i should have the algae somewhere else in the fuge... It looks like it's trying to get sucked threw to the 3rd chamber?
Nosey
Nov 11 2008, 11:48 PM
If you still have that chunk of LR in your fuge, then maybe place it in front of the hole to your 3rd chamber were your chaeto is in the pic, It should do the trick. If you don't have it anymore, you can maybe try a media bag of phose gard or something. In my 3rd chamber where the spung used to be, I placed a media bag there, and haven't had any problems yet.
Ando
Nov 12 2008, 10:23 AM
did u take your sponge out that goes into the 3rd chamber?
Nosey
Nov 12 2008, 03:01 PM
yes i did, I don't know if every one does it. I would guess you can keep it in there, but you would have to make sure you clean it every week!

Look in the DIY threads for an fuge light project to go on the back of the tank. No one sees the back anyway. I think that is your best bet for proper K rating and it'll be easy on your wallet too. I made my fuge light set-up for under $20 and my chaeto is growing like wildfire. Just my $.02.

In my BC29 I only have chaeto (no rock rubble) in the 2nd chamber, so I kept the false floor and just angled it so one side touches the bottom (next to the 1st chamber wall) and the other rests on the notch it was originally on (next to the 3rd chamber wall) and attached it with some aquarium safe adhesive. So if you are looking at it from the back of the tank it looks like this: /
That way the chaeto won't get into the 3rd chamber and the fuge has enough room to house the chaeto growth.

Does that mean your actinics are on only for an hour? or that you have them on for an hour before the other lamp and the fan turn on?

The pods that inhabit the chaeto should be good enough to keep it clean of detrius.

I have the actinics on for hour until the daylight kick on.. but they both stay on.

alright Question?
I made a media rack for my 2nd chamber where my fuge is... Do you think it would be find to put in the tank now. I made this last night.. about 15 hours ago.. I used acetone and silicone to seal it. should i just wash it with some water and dry it off so it's safe to put in my tank. I dont want any chemicals getting into my fish tank lol
here's a pic

I think... The top ill use floss, middle one i will put some carbon, then the bottom one i was thinking stick some algae in it? or small piece of Live rock?

Tomorrow I'm going to get a CUC.. What would you recommend?
As for the media rack... haa.. I had my measurements wrong. It was a hair to big.. so possibly tomorrow or Wednesday I will make a new one.. And a better one. I was bummed because it took a while to make.
oo well.. This next one will look better.

Nov 17 2008, 07:49 PM
i think i got 10 snails, 10 blue leg hermits, 3 scarlet hermits, and 3 emerald crabs...though one of them isn't green...and he nipped at some zoas that are very healthy...i wanted all scarlet hermits cause they look really nice...but they had cuc pre-bagged that day...so i just went with it...
i cut the pcs for my media rack...but loaned out my acrylic glues...so sometime this week i will try mine out...
Ando

You should add a lawnmower as part of your CUC

Do you have chaeto in there right now???
