Pyramid snails eating my zoas!

I got a new camera and wanted to take some pictures of my zoanthids. As I was snapping the shot, I noticed a pyramid snail munching away. I pulled him out and after a few minutes he turned from bright white to light brown (isn't that a crash test dummies song? :P ) and red liquid appeared in the shell.

Questions:

1. Any suggestions on getting rid of the snails? This is the second one I've found, and I've also removed three or four sundial snails.

2. WHAT is the red stuff? Doesn't matter, I'm just curious as to what happened.
