Even though its heavy, I still used toggle bolts with fender washer, at both locations, and had no signs of it failing...I believe using a 3/16 toggle will be the largest you can use, it's a performer. I bet you were a little shocked when you saw how big of a box that light came in....cant wait to see pics of your setup.

Luckily for me there is a wooden beam right above the tank, so I will just be screwing it directly into the beam. Eh, probably not getting to it this weekend though. I want to get some plumbing done first.

Uhuru

the pump has a built in controller - blows away the Litermeter III
the fauna marin balling salts are much finer than the BRS stuff I've used before . . . although I wouldn't have paid full price for it (got it for 50% off)

Any progress?

No, just finished finals yesterday gonna start working on my
Elos Mini tonight and this weekend.... As for this tank, I will probably hang the light and work on running a drain line from my 150g rubbermaid sump to the outside of the house for easy water changes.

Multiple redundancy:

This is going to be the ATO tub. There is a float valve, and in case the float valve fails, there is a float switch connected to a solenoid which will shut off the water supply. The solenoid will be plugged into a controller (possibly the new Apex). The controller will only allow the RO/DI to run for a few hrs each day. So not only is there triple redundancy, but this supposedly makes the RO membrane last longer as it's not constantly making small amounts of water throughout the day. The tunze osmolator pump then pulls water from the tub into the sump when required.
And here's a pic of what will be the cryptic fuge. I am going to sell off some of the rock though. 1/3 of the tank's drain will go through here. Water will just fill up the tub and overflow into the bigger tub that it sits in (a 150g rubbermaid sump).

I guess my last post was lost.... but anyways nothing much going on just curing the rocks with a tunze 9005 skimmer:

(I couldn't fit all the rocks in this 20L tank so the rest are in a bucket with just water)
My 150g RO/DI water storage tank came in so I will set that up soon and start making some SW.
I also bought this GEO "surge" live food feeder, which works off a single air pump:

Yes I have purchased some very nice Marco Signature "pre-cured" rock to be the main rock in my display. This stuff is unbelievably nice. I thought Eco-Rox was nice, but this is on another level!
I also finally ran the RO/DI system from the kitchen upstairs about 100 feet down to the fish room, and installed a tunze osmolator. This tank is actually going to be less maintenance than my elos mini! I'm in the process of making water to fill up the tank as we speak!

Did you ever decide on your lighting, I saw you were trying to get rid of your Profilux dosing unit on RC. Are you going with NPC or going to go with a CaRx?
Uhuru
Oct 2 2009, 08:24 PM
Yeah I am going 100% non-photo, so I am selling the ati and profilux. Actually I was pretty content with keeping and running a bunch of actinics as you suggested, but someone made an offer and in the end I'd rather have the money. All I really need is a 2-4 bulb tek fixture or I've kind of had my eye on the ecolamps LED fixtures.

Any updates on this beast? Have you tried using the "Geosapper" surge feeder? I just read the link on it and the idea behind it is really neat!
I have been thinking about the Geosapper. It seems like you could eliminate the salt creep by feeding the top section with an ATO directly from the tank. Maybe have it set up with an aqualifter to occasionally refill the top chamber of the geosapper directly from the tank. Just an idea that I though of.

I haven't used it yet, as the tank is still empty, hehe. I'm not sure what to do with this one right now. I'm definitely going to get it running, but maybe just FOWLR for a while. I have a school of 10 cardinals in a 20 that have been doing really well for a few months now, I think they're ready for a bigger tank. I would ideally like to do an NPS tank but the cost of food is no joke. I would be easily be looking at over $200/month combined with my nano tank. Right now the nano is costing about $80/month in food just to give you an idea. Add in the cost of doing more frequent water changes on a large NPS tank... well I don't even want to think about it.

Still not sure, haha but I don't need the fancy controllability of the vortechs since I will either be doing another NPS tank or FOWLR tank. I got a couple of tunze non-controllable streams (used), saved me a lot of money.

I really want to get a larger angel or something. I've never really owned a big fish before, so that's what I want to concentrate on with this tank. Initially I thought of a blue jaw or crosshatch trigger but now not so sure since even they can become serial killers, especially in anything less than 6'.

Well most likely this build is being cancelled. With my new OSFF I am probably going to set up a smaller tank with him as the center piece. Between him and my frogfish my fish fix has kinda been satisfied. It's gonna be a super cool marine planted tank with 2 schools of cardinals and a potter's angel as well. It's either gonna be ~40g or ~65g. Because of the smaller size of the tank I will be able to place it in the upper level of the house close to my elos mini. I might even connect both systems. New build thread coming soon to a reefing forum near you...

OSFF = orange spotted filefish, I was very fortunate to acquire one that has been trained to eat dry. They are an extremely difficult/impossible fish to keep unless converted to commercial diets, even then they are high maintenance - kind of like anthias that need to eat often. If you're still not familiar with them just google it I'm sure you will recognize it then.
Very cool that you are setting up a planted tank too. I'll be subscribing to your thread. I don't have lots of time and money really. My priorities are just way different from the average person
