You're supposed to mix D-D salt for 2 days before using it.

Awesome. Shouldn't be a problem then.
Time to head to the LFS to pick up a bucket...and pick up a few new corals
If DD will save me the hassle of dosing, then that alone is worth it. I only have a 16 gallon, so doing weekly water changes with DD salt should suffice even if the corals will suck up a lot of the calcium and magnesium.

It's 24hrs.

Bought a 23kg bucket of DD H20 salt for 95 CND ($90 USD) after taxes.
Will post impressions here after my water change.

Yea, 2 days is a bit much. 24hrs works fine for DD salt.

Just finished my first bucket of this salt and i like it! I stirred up the whole bucket the day i got it to get an even mix. Tried instant ocean(newer formula) and tropic marin before this and out of the 3 im sticking with the d-d. Didn't do much in the way of testing the different mixes but my corals seemed to enjoy the double D.
And i only mix my salt 3-4 hours before using it.... = \

I'm curious, I see a lot of talk about this DD salt now. Does anybody have test results from a fresh mix of Instant Ocean. I'm trying to compare the cal, alk and mag of the two. Looks like DD is the way to go though.

There is NO comparison between D-D and Instant Ocean.
D-D blows it out of the water.

I am going to call my LFS today and see if they carry D-D. With any luck they will have it or someone else in town will have it. If not I'll have to order it. I'm hearing really good things about this salt. With anything luck I can avoid dosing. I'd rather change water weekly.

I've tried a bunch of salts and researched a bunch of salts, and I would say that D-D is the salt you'll get the best levels with without dosing.
The biggest negative to it in my mind is that you have to mix it longer, 1 day minimum, 2 days ideally.

Wow a day to mix it. How do you normally go about mixing it? Do you mix the whole bucket or do you just mix what you need?

You can do it either way, I've done it both ways.
My preferred method is probably to mix up a 5g bucket worth, and if I don't use it all right then I have some available for next time.
I just keep a powerhead running and circulating it til I use it.
If you want a salt that will mix right away, try ESV B-Ionic 4 part salt.
Mixes super fast and clean and most levels are good but Magnesium levels are consistently low and measure around 1200.

I'm in Austin and I haven't seen it at any of the LFS. I usually order mine from Marine Depot. To save on shipping, I usually buy when someone on Austin Reef Club does a Marine Depot Group Buy.

i've been using this salt for around 10 months, mixed at my LFS. Mixed to a specific gravity of 1.025, I've consistently tested the Ca at 360ppm (I've gone through 2 different Elos Ca test kits getting the same measurement). Does anyone else get this problem?

I don't dose and use DD. If there is any dosing needed it'd be very minimal. But Water changes I can't see dosing being needed.

Test the TDS of the water. They might be using old filters that they've forgot to change. We had a store here that was selling treated tap water as RO. I know I've tested culligan RO water from walmart where you use the machine to fill yourself and it was almost tap water had high tds.

whether you dose depends on your inhabitants, not your salt mix. are you asking about buffering the salt mix prior to doing a water change?

It's a bad idea to use water from the grocery store machine, it's often got bad stuff in it.
Buy distilled water instead if you're going to do that.

TDS is total dissolved solids. I got a meter with calibration fluid on ebay for about $20. It is electronic and you just stick it in the water and it tells you how much stuff besides water is in the water. Good RO/DI water should read 0ppm.
I have been having the same problem with my tank looking sickly and corals dying, so I tested my RO/DI water and it read 38ppm. I realized I actually only had a RO system and not RO/DI so I just ordered a new system. I also bought a bucket of DDH2ocean salt and a titanium grounding probe to remove any stray voltage. I am hoping these three things will fix my sick tank.

alright so my Question for the group then is. for those of us who fall into the "water change bad", methodology. based on there being "no reason to swap out perfectly good water if your dosing & the water parameters are where there supposed to be". The other part of this methodology is the the only reason for a WC is the integrity of the water chemistry. so lets assume that the levels are spot on.How long would be appropriate to go between WC based on the salt & how much do you think would be an acceptable amount.
Now the reason why I'm asking in here is that while I use use this salt my self. I have always believed that basing things off of a single persons experience can lead to substantial over sites, conjecturer being interpreted as fact, & data being used or manipulated to meet the bias of the individual. so as to why I use the salt & feel that it is the best suited to the prolonged WC concept. is that from my own experience as well as from others it would seem that the H2O not only has the best starting parameters but also has greater longevity of these parameters than others, with out dosing. so I wonder if others have found this to be true & agree that this salt would show a benefit to this metodology. or if it is simply providing the placebo effect of having a better salt mix.

I kind of agree with you as I went about 1.5 weeks maybe even two with out changses and it all tested fine. Keep in mind my tank is only about 1 gallon so I change 2/3 twice a week.but think about thishow much " fresh ocean water " passes over any given four foot patch of the reef so wouldn't we want to replicate that movement

Marine depot would be my choice since they removed the overweight charge they had in the past on salt
