THEY'RE HERE!!!

And they are amazing. There are three "pieces" of about equal size, each is maybe 9 inches across, but with different numbers of berries. The first is covered in bright red-pink ones, and it has some small scallops attached to it giving it more surface area, so it has the most anemones. Next is the same size, but flat, and is coverd in bright orange anemones. The third is also the same size and flat, but about half covered with light pink/peach anemones. Some of them got a little smooshed in transit, but look like they'll recover. All except for one anemone, which is turned entirely inside out, like a sock. I don't know how it accomplished this, but I doubt it's gonna make it the way it is. There is also what appears to be a dead brittle star (I was hoping for a live one, but oh well, maybe one has yet to reveal itself), and a few baby scallops (still vey much alive). The water they were in was very cold. I didn't check the temp, but I'm guessing low forties, maybe even high thirties down by the icepack (which was still frozen). I think this was a benefit, because everything was basically preserved til it got here. They're opening up in my tank now, I'll try to get pics tonight, and definitely by tomorrow.

Glad to hear it arrived safely, I hope there is enough stuff to spread around to the group!!! I would have sent more but they are pretty heavy when attached to the shell. I wanted to make sure this batch arrived with no problems before I send the motherlode. Between 4 of us, we collected 40 scallops. I only used 3 half shells and sent you 3 more. Just imagine how much stuff went to waste.
I cant wait to see the pics!!

Of course you do. As do I. Actually, I wos wondering, the rock of white/peach ones, I'm not sure I'll be able to break it up into four parts without killing the cool bivalves on it, so if I can't I was wondering if anyone would be okay with not getting a few white ones. Does anyone even want the white ones?
Daniel, when do you want me to ship to you? It's probably a good idea to let them rest a week or so before another shipping adventure, plus if I tell my mom I need to do anything more involving mail and anemones she might go insane.

it'd be cool to get all, but if not thats okay...or even if you can only send a couple of the white/peach ones. but whatever you can split up is cool with me

um....ship whenever you think they're ready....temps are good here now...70s in the day, 50s at night, but no use getting yourself in trouble or risk anemone deaths.

I definately want some white ones, but want some of every color. If it's hard to frag the white ones (or if everyone else just thinks that they're not as nice) I don't mind getting a disproportionate amount of them in the divy. I do want enough of each kind to start colonies with all three colors, though. I know I'll be treated "fairly" (bribe is already in the mail, man).

Love the cold water biotope tanks. This is a great thread

. I'll be tagging along for now.
Are your tanks glass or acrylic? I have been wondering if you get condensation on the outside of the tank at all?
Thanks

Jamie
Sep 23 2008, 10:43 PM
Thanks! They're quarter inch acrylic. I get condensation when it gets above 95 or 100 outside, but that doesn't happen too often here, so it's not a problem.

jamie, I have a slight worry.
In the wild, Corynactus colonies will fight to the death if one colony starts to encroach upon another - they have those enormous nematocysts for a reason. I'm interested to see how they interact in your tank over the next couple weeks, but I tentatively recommend against mixing individual polyps from completely seperate bivalves when you start divying them up to ship.
But like I said, we'll see how the next couple weeks go.

Yeah, I was a little worried about that. I've seen pictures with different colored colonies right up against each other, but I suppose they could be fighting in those pics. I'll watch em to see how they do together.

I was wondering the same. Were they shipped in separate bags? The orange ones look kind of pissed off, I've never seen a polyp puke as many acontia as some in the photos apparantly are.
Not to be a backseat driver, but is there plenty of current in there?

Sounds good.
How are you going to feed them? They're more planktonic than your other anemones, right?
Sorry for all the double-checking, but you have a VERY valuable stranglehold on the entire strawberry inventory!
Jamie
Sep 23 2008, 11:00 PM
Yeah, some of them are really po'ed. I mean, one of them turned itself inside out! I was assuming that was just from the shipping stress, but it could be from the other nems too. They were all in the same bag together, I bet the water was full of they're "chemicals" which made them upset. also, interstingly, even though I didn't put any of the water from the package they came in into the tank, the urticina got really po'ed after I put them in. The water is also visibly murky, I guess that's all just from stuff coming off the shells. I already did a three gallon water change, I'm gonna wake up early tomorrow and do another if the urt is still upset. And yes, there's a decent amount of flow. I'll be adding more later, but for now, while they're still adjusting, it's only moderate flow.
edit: Jeremai - According to Steve Weast's website, he feeds his a cube of mysis every other day, so that's what I was planning. The tank is sort of gyre-like too, so whatever food you put in stays suspended for a long time, which'll give the nems ample time to catch it.

Just an aside, I could recommend strongly a couple books by U. Eriche Friese. I have one, succinctly entitled
Sea Anemones. I have it, and despite being ancient, it's awesome (it's rather technical and
at least half of it covers coldwater species). I haven't seen the newer version
Sea Anemones as a Hobby (or something like that), but it has more species in the index and it's updated so I assume it's even better. You can pick it up on Alibris or Amazon right now for like 8 bucks post-paid.

Urticina does't exactly roll off the tongue, no.
Ok, I couldn't find any carbon, but I diy'ed a makeshift skimmer that should help some. Everything looks fine actually, except the Urticina, which is still quite upset. I'm going to bed now (sooo tired) so we'll just have to see what everything looks like in the morning. I'm getting up extra early in case there are any problems.
