Sweet awesomeness that tank.

Sorry for the useless post just wanted to tag this thread.

Just my 2 cents...

I think your tank is way more innovative and your attention to detail far exceeds the RC competition. I really cannot wait to see the water in this thing. I have to agree that you were right all along with the design of the overflow. It makes it so much cleaner. I love that shot from the inside of the tank looking all the way down to the overflow.

LOL! Yeah, start on one side and start walking (25 feet wink.gif )

Damn, never thought about it that way, yeah its 12' long, but being double sided that's 25' feet of fish tank to look at. I'd lose weight just walking around the fish tank!

I voted for you! While the solar tank is nice, I guess it's not a huge surprise after reading about Richard Harker's 2000 gallon tank 6 years ago...or Dr. Lee Cin Eng's paper in the '60s.

Thanks!!!

Thanks, I appreciate all the attention the tank is getting, win or lose I'm thrilled with the response. Hope everyone is able to take something away from my experience. I can't wait to have it filled and see if I can view all 12' biggrin.gif

Sorry, no further updates yet, I'm still short on votes but no big deal, it helps keep the stress levels down to finish it quickly especially now that I'm out of money. wink.gif

Holy sweetness, how did I miss this!?

You need to have rolling chairs that slide back and forth for best viewing. Can I come scuba dive in it? I am only 5'6" so i shoudl fit!

wow the vote is pretty close between you and solar power.
I voted for you biggrin.gif good luck

Sea Slug
Calvin , Quick question on your aquascape plans.........are you going for a more open look with alot of the live rock in the sump area or are you going with the majority of the live rock in the tank ? Either way it's going to be awesome cool.gif . Not that you asked for it but , my vote is for a more open look so the fish can get some speed up from end to end laugh.gif . Like you and everyone else , I can't wait to seee it filled and running . Congrats one one of the best projects seen in a long long time !
calvin415
Thanks guys!

Sea Slug, I'm going for a mix actually... It will be 5 or 6 rock islands allowing room for fish to swim the length, but also back and forth. biggrin.gif At least that's the plan. LOL!

Only update: I picked up some exterior paint for the stand (don't want any drips to affect it) and had it matched to the wall paint. As soon as I can find a little time, I hope to get some water in the tank (only a gallon or two) so I can ensure the tank is level and then attach the plywood to the stand and fill the gaps with greatstuff. I'm debating on trim, I'm thinking doing a floor trim (like in the rec room) around the bottom of the tank to cover the ply and styro, anyone have some other ideas?

I've heard doing black acrylic, but that would involve seaming two pieces together again...

Thanks!

What about just using some MDF baseboards cut to size and painted to match the stand.

Sorry if I wasn't clear before but that's what I was suggesting... Just using white trim (just like the floor).

BTW, last day to vote, if you haven't already.

I voted for you. The solar tube one is tough competition though, I really liked that thread too. If you don't win, there's still TOTM (which I think is going to be more fitting for this anyways).

Thanks!

Okay so here's an update:

Nothing new. LOL! Okay not entirely... I'm taking this week off to finish my basement so I finally get sign off and once that is done, water will be allowed into the tank. To help jump start the delay, I'm getting a Octopus 200 Recir skimmer rather than building my own, as well as a 10x54w T-5 retro setup, just a couple more T-5 setups to find and I'll be ready to get'r going. biggrin.gif On the tank side, I still need to do some polishing on the tank, as well as get it drilled for plumbing. I need to repaint the stand (bought some exterior paint) so any drips will not affect the drywall, and once painted I can spray foam under the plywood to finalize the re-leveling project...

Sorry for the delay, but I've been working on this setup the last two Saturdays as well.

Thanks,

Alright, here's an update. biggrin.gif

I leveled the tank with 2 gallons of water in it (approx 1/4" deep) and then sprayed expanding foam under the remaining space to support it evenly. I also picked up my skimmer and lights last night, all that's left is to build my sumps, plumb the sump and closed loop, and build the canopy... 1 more light setup to buy (IceCap 4x39w T-5), so it's almost there. I did a quick test of lighting using just 2 bulbs with a coralife ballast and it was nice and bright, I can't wait to see 4 bulbs overdriven!!! I finished building my stairs tonight (minus handrail which will be done next week) so I should no longer have basement work delaying me any longer (as long as I pass inspection).

I know, shut up and post some pics right?

And for giggles, here's my the stairs (hand made each tread out of hickory and solid pine painted white) that has been delaying me for the last few weeks.

Just pulling your leg man. I'm sure you are as anxious as we are to see the tank completely filled.

Maybe another 2 gallons by next update?

Great job on the stairs Calvin........did you just cover the old treads and risers or did you remove the old ones and put down new on old frame ? I'm asking becuase I'm thinking of covering mine , right now there just pine painted grey from when the house was built . John

I know, sorry... I have lots to do still and unfortunately my Acrylic supplier (for my sump) is based in Houston... I hope everyone is okay. sad.gif

To Do:
Build Sumps
Build Canopy
Drill Tank
Plumb Everything
But another T-5 Setup (IceCap 8x54w done, IceCap 4x39w still to find)
Install Lights in Canopy
Install Fans for Canopy Cooling
Install Fans for Humidity Control in Stand
Install Doors and Frame on Stand
Order lots of Marco Rock, Sand, and a Bucket or two of Salt

Fill'R Up...
Sea Slug
Excellent......I'll have to do the same with my basement stairs in the future .
rustytrombonist
how many gallons is it going to be?

I have an idea... I remember a while back you were deciding on possibly a showpiece fish, and something just occurred to me: with all the LR you could fit in here, you might want to consider breeding mandarin dragonets... just an idea. Keep it up man
