I'm interested to hear your thoughts and to see what it looks like, Calvin. If it's positive I may just bite the bullet...
Gomojoe
Eric,
Are you going to get the PAR meter to check out what your getting? I'm curious cause those lights do look super bright!
calvin415
Well I still have the new canopy to build but I love these lights! David I hope to do a PAR test asap, just have to find out who has the meter. I'll post some pics when I do the PAR tests.
calvin415
Still waiting to get the club PAR meter, but in the mean time I did some LUX tests...

I'm pulling 28000 LUX 10" off the sandbed and 11,600 LUX on the sandbed, 1' below the water it's 55,000 LUX!. That's shining the LED's through a dirty 1/2" acrylic brace to hold the LED fixture until the new canopy can be built.

I read somewhere that an estimate for PAR is take lux/44 which give me 1250 1" below the surface about 635 at the top of the rocks, and 260 on the sandbed. Not bad at all!

We'll see how close that calculation is on Wednesday.
n0rk
Now those are some encouraging figures, man. Can't wait to see the true PAR values!
calvin415
PAR Values are in!!!!

Here's an un-adjusted pic just to show you how much blue is in these fixtures.

And here with an adjusted white balance...

And here are the Par Ratings through the acrylic brace. Once I have a mounting solution they will be raised an inch or two.

Those numbers if they are tough to read, they are 1600, 500, 450, and 290. biggrin.gif

FTSSSSSSSSSSS
calvin415
Tank is too wide for a FTS, you can't see anything...

Here are a few close up's of some of the corals you've seen and a few you haven't...

Hey, new pictures! Looks awesome man!
JKUNZ
Awesome. I've been researching replacing my HQI's with LEDS. I'll be keeping an eye on how yours develops! smile.gif
fewskillz
That's some serious PAR output. Congrats Eric. Good choice in light. FTV? full-tank-video?!?! biggrin.gif

I'll keep testing these, and see how things develop... So far I love the lack of heat, and the open look! I can actually look down into my tank again!!!

Thanks! The Video's can't adjust for white balance so I don't like them, but I'll work on it as soon as I have the pendants mounted. I have an idea on how to do it, just have to find the materials.
n0rk
Holy cow, those numbers are HUGE! Looks awesome smile.gif
calvin415
Thanks! While the spread looks good, the PAR numbers between the pendants isn't crazy so I'll retest once I raise them a little (mounted) and if they are still a little low, I'm going to add 1 more.

Do you have photoshop? (Or something similar) If you do, you could take a panoramic shot and stitch them together for a FTS biggrin.gif

I think a Panoramic FTS would look amazing!!!

BTW I love your tank. Would love to do something like this later on smile.gif
Marteen
What kind of par are you shooting for at sand level? If you leave some low par areas between the rocks you could keep some of those deepwater zoas and sun corals or gorgs in those places.

Yes I have software but it's tough because there is no background and the stitching gets messed up due to the see through look of the tank. Takes 2 people 1 to shoot the other to hold up a block.

Not impossible but have many more time requiring tasks right now.

No goal in mind, but zoo's are not the focus so I'm after consistent high light throughout.

Ordered some equipment for mounting the LEDs hope fully I can get started next week sometime.
polarblair2000
Oh yeah I guess that would be pretty tricky. Maybe once you've finished those other tasks smile.gif
lex0219
Amazing set up you have their, one of the best DIY projects I have seen.

I love this tank so much I want to punch myself in the face.

Any updates on the tank?

If you would like to e-mail me the pictures with a frame of reference "i.e. a coral projection" i can try my best to stitch them together for you.

Based on how good your tank looks with those lights mate, I've ordered myself a bunch of the lower-powered ones for my setup. You inspired me to take the plunge smile.gif

Wow Calvin I just read through this whole thread. Beautiful build and tank!

Great PAR values too! Your growth should continue to be insane!

updates? please?
calvin415
Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've been super busy this summer and finally feel I might actually have everything (for now) done!

As proof, here is what I've done since my last update, mostly non-fish stuff so you understand where all my time has gone:

First my Shark Dive...

Backyard:
Shed

Re-landscaping

Alright, so we did some work in the basement as well, got rid of the old furniture and went with a bigger screen. I also built a pendant to mount the LEDs in, here are some pics from tonight....

And a closeup of the new pendant...

And the LED layout

sammy113
Nice! I was wondering about this tank the other day. Great upgrades in the house.

Thanks Sammy!

Nicely done indeed!

Do you ever find that it is cumbersome to have the couch up against one side of the tank? I realize it isn't all that wide, but our couch is very close to my tank, and it is a pita sometimes. I am able to squeeze between when need be, it just isn't something I'd like to be doing too often. (I'm sure someone has already said it, but man, those couches should be facing the OTHER way!)

super wicked....what kind of livestock do u have in there these days?

(BTW nice work on all the other non-reef projects)

I love this tank, now even better with LEDs. For the stitching pictures together for a full tank shot try autostitch. It is a free program (windows only iirc) that will stitch your photos together. Just select all of the photos you want to stitch together and use the default options and out comes a full image. You change change the overall dimensions of the outputted image, for full size just do width of pic x number of pictures and the height as the height of one pic (if only one level of pictures). Just play around with it. Really cool software, what nasa used to stitch together the images from the Mars rover.

I do find it tough to work around, but usually I just take off the shoes and walk all over the couch.

Not much, had a freebie that decided to go ape on my fish so I'm in the re-stocking phase... Still have my Potters Angel, Lawnmower Blenny, Randall Goby, 2 or 3 Chromies, a Firefish or 2 and some Peppermint Shrimp.

Thanks for the link, I'll try to see what I can put together. Hard part is the background screws up most of the stitching so I have to try to cover the back of the tank when I do it.

I can't decide if I like the new landscaping or the new light pendant the best! Awesome work on both. Great looking shed, too, I need one of those to get the gardening stuff out of the garage.
