I have a BC14 I'd love to have this rack for. I'm having issues with my chemi-pure compacting itself in the bottom of the middle chamber, reducing flow. I've recently moved the chemi-pure it to the first chamber where I usually keep my heater (removed heater for the summer). I've added chaeto to the middle chamber to help reduce nitrates. Don't yet know how to get under the chaeto to remove the floss I have to catch the debris. Sure would be nice to have everything in a nice little sleeve to pull out and do all of my cleaning!

If you can get me good dimentions, I may be able to help you. PM for details.

Schedule Update for the first week of September:

I will be out of the country From September 3-9, spending many hours in the ocean in the Dominican Republic, if I don't get caught by customs with a vast amount of corals wink.gif , production will resume after that time. I will be running production up until September 2nd, catching up on backorders, new orders, and future orders.

I have always shipped out in the order of payment. I should be able to ship orders for another week or so, but anything after a point, all depending on demand, will be shipped after I return from vacation.

If you have any questions please send them my way, I will be out of data communication while on vacation and I am sure my girlfriend will send my blackberry into the ocean upon arrival just to make sure cool.gif

Thank you to everyone for your past purchases, I look forward to getting caught up in the next week and a half. In the month of September I will be back to a stocking level since life will be slowing down. Please feed my fish and check the ATO on my tank while I am gone wink.gif

lucasw
Steve, enjoy your vacation. When I received the media rack and the cup holder, I will share my experience here on the forum.

Here in Holland, a lot of RSM owners are very curious about the mods you've made on the RSM. They keep asking me to post my experience on the dutch forum. I'm afraid that you can expect a lot of emails from holland biggrin.gif .

Great! Hey, more the better, I plan on rocking these out after my vacation. Softball is over with for the summer so I have even more time after work for production. Fill my email up! I appreciate it.

Yours will be shipping out tomorrow, all backorders will be boxed up tonight, shipping out and arriving soon! I got caught up last night, was here really late, but it was worth it.

UH OOOHHHHH look what I just purchased today! BioCube 29 Media Rack releasing sometime soon!

lucasw
Nice! Is the BioCube going to be an OfficeCube?
StevieT
haha, we'll see. I have a few options when I am done using it as a test platform.

Either get a MH light for it and use it as a frag tank since I will be needing to do trimming soon on my corals.

Or I could sell it at a good price to someone here or locally.

I really don't want to get into a coral business or even mess around with frags, but I suppose I almost have to since they like to grow in my tank and I have to keep everything peaceful and far apart.

More tanks = more work.....

Hello Steve

2 month since I've installed my media rack and attached my Tunze9002 to it. So far no problem to report, the media rack is doing very well and I still find it very well designed when it comes to clean everything. I appreciate that my skimmer is attached to my media rack because all comes together very easily and cleaning is faster and easier.

As I said before, it just took me a couple of days to find the good way to fit my media (sponge&floss) and keep the water flow fine. Since that, I never had an issue, but it requires regular cleaning & changes.

Enjoy your vacation time wink.gif
lucasw
Does your Tunze 9002 perform better than the stock skimmer, now you've been running for over 2 months? And how long did it take for you, before the 9002 starts to kick in, and starts to skimm?

I'll jump in for this one. The Tunze 9002 on my RSM produces more skimmate (brown gunk) every two days than the original RSM skimmer did in two months.
And my tank is not heavily stocked as others here. (5 fish and about 30 small soft corals/zoas/shrooms)

I have been running the Tunze for 6 or so months now and it out performed the stock skimmer the first day I installed it. I had no break in period and it started producing good skimmate right away. Every tank is different in that regard, but it should work pretty much out of the box.

same experience for me since the installation of the Tunze

to sum up a better performance for less noise produced

what I would like now is a mod for the RSM with 4 or 6 vents installed in the front side of the hood to keep the water cold. Have you ever heard about such a mod ?

I think it's possible to open the front side of the hood and remove half of it, a vent ramp could be attached there but for now I'm to afraid to break the front side when trying to open the hood

here is an example :

Nice to hear from you Steve. Monday I got your package. Real craftmanship (especially the packing)! The bad thing is, the customs caught the package, and I had to pay $32.30 tax/fees mad.gif . This friday I will install the rack and the Tunze, I hope all will fit into the aquarium, and that the 9002 will perform beter than the stock skimmer. If so, then I have prevented a system crash for in the future. I even got a bag of chemie pure. From a german webstore I've ordered purigen, that will come later.

In the future I will place a new order, but then for the RSM 250 wink.gif .

It is possible, but the risk is high to break the plastic cover, and what if it wouldn't work, you end up with a torn upper hood huh.gif . You can try a couple of flat fans, and stick it on the front side. You don't have to break anything, and give a try without any risk.
Phullbrick
I have a 6 vents ramp from JEBO but I need to keep the front hood opened to use it, this is why I'm trying to think to put it inside the hood for a permanent use with a water temp detector

I would feel better if I could put a hand on a spare part or a used hood in order to practise but unfortunately I can't find it

I'm sure this would be a major MOD for the RSM and everyone who doesn't want to buy a chiller would a potential customer

I have installed the media rack and the Tunze 9002. On the skimmer body there is a line drawn, which indicates the waterline where it should be for a proper skimmer performance. It is difficult to get the water level exact on the line where it should be. Practically, how do I handle this? Is is beter to have the waterline over that line, or under, if I have to choose?
JimDantin
Phullbrick --

Opening the front lid is a little tricky, but not all that bad. What kind of heat problems are you having that makes you consider the fan mod? I'm running additional lighting without any heat issue. Check out the details here
http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...t&p=1769958
There are lots of pictures that show the inside of the lid.
JimDantin
Another comment on temperatures -- this is from another thread -- what temp are you trying to maintain?

QUOTE (JimDantin @ Aug 26 2008, 06:05 PM) *
I've recorded around 1 degree F increase in temperature.

Our local fish group had an interesting discussion about tank temperatures. The general concensus was that you should quit trying to hold down the temperature unless it's trying to go above 84. If it stays below 84 without any chillers or other serious equipment, then set up the tank to run ALL the time at that temp. It's the CHANGE that does the most harm.

If your tank drops down to 77-78 at night, but you struggle to keep it at that temp during the day, why not set your heaters to hold it at something like 82 all the time? 77 to 84 is a BIG temperature rise -- 82 - 84 is no big deal.

Just a thought from some people who have WAY more experience than me!

I would chose over the line but still make sure it is under the top of the skimmer lid. Overall, a little over or under has not hindered my skimmers performance that much.

Thanks. How are the mermaids doing?

The first 2 days, the Tunze did nothing, and now........it's rocking, producing tea like liquid. And the noice, after a full year, I got rid of the noise. I'm preparing to set the old skimmer on fire, just for the celebration.

Mermades were good, but scared of all the hurricanes. smile.gif

Yes, the noise is the biggest imporvement. That is what it will produce, sounds like it is working great. Just send it back to Pinky on fire, she likes that stuff. wink.gif

Update

I am making the bracket standard on all production racks. It will make things easier for all customers as you will not have to note if you need it or not any more. 70% of you are ordering it with the bracket so it is on there for good! For those that are mounting the Tunze to the back of the tank, you will now have a nice handle for easy removal. Enjoy
Mister Chips
Hey Stevie
I have been using my rack for a while now and it still seems to be a VERY tight fit. I have to struggle to get it out when I want to access my media. The 'handle' broke off the first day I had it. The glue is not strong enough to use it to pull out the rack. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a certain way to put it in?

Thanks
StevieT
Make sure you have it in the correct way. The inTank logo should be facing you when looking throught the electrical pannel. On the bracket, sorry that it broke off. It is only there as a favor to customers wanting to mount the tunze to the rack and not do any other mods. I still recommend mounting the Tunze to the rear of the tank as the rack was not designed to be a hold point for a piece of equipment, only for filtration media.

The braket was simply there to hold forces of the skimmer, and not as a handle. Some tanks have more silicone than others, maybe that is what is catching on the rack? Keep me informed, the directions included with all racks and cups indicate the correct way to install the equipment.

Is the fit tight because there is a skimmer attached or is it tight in the tank anyways?

I have to remove the inlet comb, before I can put in or pull the rack out. If not doing this, I notice a restistance. And I can imagine by doing this with force, you can easily break the handle.
Mister Chips
Thanks for the help Stevie. By the way...the rack works GREAT!

Are you sure you are putting it in the correct way? I have designed the rack with the intake grate in mind. I know there is a lip there that the rack needs to get over. So I have offset one side of the brackets to compensate for this.

Notice the area that will allow the intake grate lip to slid through?

StevieT - You're mods look great for the RSM!

I want to buy the rack and skimmer cup from you. Please send me details on what is available and how to purchase them from you.

Thanks!

You are right Steve, I've put the rack on the wrong side. Now there is no resistance, and the rack I can easily pull it out and slide it in for maintenance. Great!

Awesome!

I figured you had it in the wrong way, it only fits in one way because of the intake grate lip. Enjoy

Thanks guys! Glad they all made it safe to your international locations, but after those pack jobs, it would be pretty tough to hurt anything biggrin.gif

The chemie-pure bag in the media rack is causing flow restriction (I change my floss every 2 days). Mine Tunze is already sitting pretty low, and I'm having trouble to get the waterline high enough for a proper skimming. I'm having a bad idea to put the chemie-pure bag in the chamber of death, or has anyone any other idea to solve this problem?
StevieT
NO, don't put it in the chamber of death.

This is a common problem because the chemi pure is so large. Have you tied it to the middle shelve as shown in the directions? This solves 99% of flow problems with that bag.

Another thing to try is only using a small bit of floss. Don't pack the first shelve full of it, there is no need. Only use a small handful if it is fibers, or only use 2-3 squares if you have to cut it.

I am having GREAT success with a product that looks like this:

It catches all detritus, but doesn't need to be changed as often as it lets in more flow.
RAG415
Steve - Just got the new rack and cup in the mail today...they look awesome!
I can't wait to fill the tank to see how well they work.

Thank you!

Hello Steve (From France...),

I saw your wonderful media rack, and, since my red sea max original skimmer work very well, I would like to know if you plan to do a different media rack for red sea max standard skimmer ? Thanks for answering, and... hope to read you soon ! Thanks again for all (It's very helpfull for novice, like me !).

Hey Jerome-

I had put some thought into that idea in the beginning of things. I wanted to offer RSM customers with any skimmer the chance to enjoy a simplified filtration.

But unfortunately it will not work. If you put any media on top of the skimmer pump, it will block so much flow that the pumps will starve and you will be very mad smile.gif

I know some tanks can handle a little filtration like a sponge over the intake, but I can not risk making a product that will effect flow in some tanks.

Your best bet is to get that amazing 9002 so I can ship you a media basket and skimmer cup, and you will no longer have to deal with the noise and chamber of death tongue.gif biggrin.gif cool.gif

thanks for the note, stay in touch if you decide to hear your brain think

interesting, I have the stuffing crap you can buy at the fabric store, I switch that on and off. The problem is that these fiber suffings and filters work too well! So they can clog up flow in just a few days, starving pumps and messing with the ATO in the RSM tank.

I'll have to check that out, but I don't know if I can fit that price into my budget cool.gif

Be careful using too much, it can really clog up flow in the RSM if you do not change frequently

OK -- this is the same old issue -- picking the "right" amount of floss!

How about posting a picture of what you think is the best amount?
