Let me know the make and model of the fixture. I might just envision a tank to fit! BTW, the coral you gave me is coloring up nicely. Only lost the lunar eclipses, but all else is gonna make it. I'll be posting pics soon.

Anyway I think i am going to change my dosing pumps out to something else since i lost my MG pump since its reduction gear locked up ( it was only 2rpm) I think i might change all three out to one Aquatronica Dosing Pump or a GHL profilux dosing pump X3

The Current Sunpod, hmmm. I've been dreamin about LEDs lately. Won't be for a few months before I can buy a new light anyway. Is a 21k bluer than a 20?
Mine's got great polyp extension, but I think it's actually lightening up instead of turning deeper purple. I'm curious to see what yours becomes...
The tiny setosa piece is doing much better than the larger one. The bigger piece has been struggling to get its polyps out from day one.
Yeah, too bad for the lunars. Those woulda been cool to keep.
scottyreef
Jul 30 2009, 11:39 PM
the leds are just small 5mm leds for moonlights nothing really that cool to be honest. well the giesemann megachrome is the crispest light blue buld i have ever had there is no tidy bowl look to it. And no its not any bluer to me that other bulbs in short.
What are your plans for this weekend are you still looking to frag up corals this weekend?

to be honest i never notice his fish but i know he got some really rare ones my main focus with him is corals other than that me and him don't have a whole lot to talk about. Dont get me wrong he's a great guy in all but he takes reefer a litttle too serious for my taste. Wel i deal with a lot of people who have great stuff and never frag the only thing you can do is wait and them them get tired of that item and never stop asking for it thats what i do. What the worst they can say no just try to be tactful about and not annoying

yeah, it's my buddy who owns a LFS he's got an awesome 37oceanic cube SPS tank as a display in the store. He's fraged stuff before but at the time I had no money or my tank was messed up. He completely butchered his blue tort and a piece the size of a tennis ball was $40! Unforntuneatly I still had my foam wall with was the cause of my water quality issues, I finally took it out on monday.

Well my pH probe went out today so i ordered a new one from reef geek. i tried to calibrate it twice but the slope wasn't linear and the was a zero shift. so either the KCL solution got fouled through a micro crack on the pH bulb or the anode depleted. its a cheap probe anyway i am thinking of changing it to a Durafet type probe which is non glass solid-state, ion-sensitive field-effect transistor based operation which will work without failure for at least ten years. I get them at cost and i am thinking of trying one out

scotty whats your secret to keeping such nice sps in a nano?
scottyreef
Aug 19 2009, 11:32 PM
1.clean water
2. i only feed tank every 10 days.
3. keep you pharmeters constant dont add a whole bunch of anything at one time. IE corals, chemicals, water changes and heating and cooling all should be done in small increments
4. short light cycles coral get there maximum input with in the first 4 hour hour from when your lights are on. I run a 4 on 8 off light cycle twice a day
5. always dip
6. never ever frag coral in your tank
7. keep your hands out of your tank
most important keep it simple daily mantinance does wonders and the more chemicals and reef wonders and fades you add to your tank the more chance you will have a failure
Also never skimp on bulbs because if you plan on have high quailty corals you need a high quailty bulb this doent mean you need the most expensive light out there you just need to change your bulbs before you notice your coral suffering.

Now THOSE are some tips man. I don't think people put enough thought into what they are putting into their tanks and how much space things need to grow. I know that I am guilty of this as well but it's always hard to resist just that "one extra piece." I also try my best to keep my freaking hands out of the tank as much as I can. That's what super long tongs are for...the only time I have my hands in there is when I can't reach something with the tongs or when I have to glue, remove, clip something.
I completely agree with you on a shorter light cycle as I'm at right about 7 hours total now. I used to run my bulbs for 9 hours and slowly whittled it down to 7 after doing a good bit of reading and research.
Care to elaborate on why you do the 4 on 8 off cycle? So, for example, you would run your lights from
- 6am-10am
-off til 4 PM and back on til 8?
Have you noticed any major differences? I know that when I cut my lighting back to just 7 hours, I noticed a pretty big jump in growth and coloration. Do you have any fish in your tank? Just wondering since you only feed once every 10 days.

This is from a post about a year ago about my light cycle. sorry i am to lazy to type it again
I'm curious about your light cycle being 4 on / 8 off / 4 on / 8 off / .... Why is this? It's halving & doubling the normal day night cycle, obviously, so does this encourage growth?
This is a quote from Practial Coral Farming by Miguel Tolosa
4 on 8 off light cycle
There have been some experiments exploring the benefits of maximum Zooxanthelle alage production by using a alternating light cycle of 4 hours on and 8 hours off.
The Journal of Experimental Msrine Biology and Ecology Found that Motility, Or growth, In the cells of Zooxanthelle alage " occurred only during the period of illumination and lasted 8-9h, with a peak at 2.5-4h after lights on." It is this peak at 2.5-4h that has given rise to farms based on the 4 on 8 off light cycle. there has been increased coral health. The amount of growth depends upon the corals being farmed, but nearly all coral show marked improvement using this light cycle.
You can find this article in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and ecology Volume 298 Issue 1, 7 January 2004, Pages 35-48http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=A...88cd6fcccd47ed9I have noticed alot of difference grow is a little fast but the color of my coral seem to stay brighter and not wash out and the best thing is my light arn't on for long in my tank when i am not at home.
yes i have two small masked gobies i am from the school a hungry fish is a happy fish. you have to remember fish and corals in a reef system is essentially nutrient deficient environment
my light cycle is 6-10am/ 6-10pm
