$10 a sexy is robbery. I pay at the most $8.99 at the rip off pet store. The other two in my town sell them for $6.99. Most of the time they give me one for free when buying corals and what not. Great to watch though. I'm going to try and get more then 5 in a nice close up.
Good to know on the bristle worms, thanx Lalani.

Jeez! Even at the snob shop in the city they are less then $10, guess the CA coast helps shipping costs??? I feel lucky.
It's funny how pricing varies so much in this hobby, I saw a juvenile emperor angle for $69 at one store and $29 at another on the same day.

In what way is the social interaction between these guys different when they're in a group of 5 rather than a group of 3?
I know they do better in groups of odd numbers, but how does a larger amount of them together affect things?
Also, I'm having someone ship me some Sexies, do you have any tips on the best way to ship these guys?

Hmmm, I've noticed that my sexies are more active and tend to explore the tank more now that there are 5 of them, as opposed to three (and before then 2). The more there are, the more comfortable they feel and I've even noticed that they sometimes split into two groups.. three and two.
I've had sexies shipped to me twice and have only seen them all placed together in a bag of water, no special precautions. I'm sure you couple probably use smaller bags and put one shrimp in each, but not sure if that would be safer or not..
When are you getting them?

I should have them in approximately 1 week.
I still have that one Frogspawn in my 20L tank, it's just walled off in the corner, and I was planning on putting them in there.
I have the Frogspawn from Mercuryne in there too.
I wouldn't have to worry about them pulling off the tips of that one Frogspawn and spreading them around would I?
I'm just paranoid about that now.
They have to be fed every day to keep them from eating Zoa skirts, right?
Oh wait, I have a nice Acan in there and I think someone posted a couple of pages back about Sexies eating their Acan.

What to do, what to do...

Geez, no need to fuss me on the other thread. I'm at work you know.

I don't think you would have to worry about the sexies doing that with the frogspawn. They usually stay on the branches and not on the actual tentacles.
Feeding frequency depends on the shrimp. I feed once a day and that seems to be enough to keep them happy. Every once in a while I'll see one edging towards the zoas anyway and I feed again, but not often. Even if they do pick at the zoas, the zoas heal up really fast.
And I'm not sure about the acans. That was the only incidence I've heard of them picking at acans.

I dunno, my Fropspawns inflate so much that I don't think it's possible for them to hang out on the branches without also getting some tentacle action.
I'd hate to be "only" the second time you've heard about Sexies eating Acans.

The two in your pic are female and the one in the pic I just posted is male. The main difference can be seen in their tails. Females will have a larger, wider, tail and the largest band of white is disconnected.. while the males have smaller, skinnier, tails in which the largest band of white is solid.

weet - add a few more this way testosterone rules your fish tank?

With your luck, they will be all boys

Anyways, I have a question about feeding. Currently, I have formula one small pellets, formula one flakes, and some baby brine shrimp just for special occasions

I was told by the person who sold it to me to just put in a few pellets and a flake each day (flake is more for green banded goby then for the sexies). How many pellets should I be adding each time I feed? (I only need to feed once a day, right?) Also, I tried target feeding them, with everything from brine shrimp to pellets to flakes, and they want nothing of it. They just scurry away from the forceps each time I try. So, how do I know if they are getting enough to eat then?
Last thing, I tried looking for the omega one shrimp pellets that fab was talking about, and i tried 3 LFS's, all coming up with a miss. Is that stuff still sold? if so, would it be better thn the small pellets I have now?

Hey Shack, sexies are generally a little wary when you first try to present food to them, but after a while they will get used to whatever tools you use. Just slowly move the food toward them, and avoid any quick movements. If that doesn't work, just drop a couple of pellets in their general vicinity and they should find it. One pellet for each sexy, if the pellets are small, and once a day should be fine. Depends on how big their appetites are!

They have huge appetites tbh. I even saw 2 of the sexies fighting with the goby for his flakes! lol. Anyways, I found something very interesting that I did not expect from sexies. I did not realize that sexies were omnivores, as I had two of them eating away at the algae at the bottom of the tank

Of course, the accumulationg of algae was a result of me slightly overfeeding the sexies, just to ensure they are well fed

I am getting a few more snails this saturday to try and clean up the tank a bit of algae

Just making sure, algae isn't harmful at all towards sexies? It just appears to be an alternate food source for them

Other than that, all the sexies are quite happy, and hosting mainly in my zooanthid and chaeto

I have been reading this thread for a long time, and it inspired me to add some sexy shrimp. So on Wed. I acclimated my 5 sexy shrimp to their new home my CADlights 12. They have been a great addition to the tank, and so fun to watch. I was shocked to see that they ate right away after only being in the tank for 24 hours. I already have 3 hanging out in the frogspawn, and the other two really seem to like one of my leathers.
Thanks for the great thread and the inspiration to do something new!

Let me put it this way. If there is anyway possible for them to climb up to it (other than the glass of the tank) they will climb up there. As an example, one of my sexies made it to the lid of my tank today by climbing up the tubing of my fulter. So, as long as there is no walkable way up, you will be fine.

first let me say that i love sexies!
but i have a quick question: i just acclimated 3 sexies to my 25 gallon tank. they're doing great! they're already eating and looks like they're gonna hang out in my duncan at night. but for some reason my zoas are staying closed during the day. the sexies like to hang out on them but close up as soon as they are touched... is this normal? the only reason i ask is cuz at the LFS they had a large colony of zoas that the shrimp would hang out on all day that stayed open regardless of the sexies... ???
Lalani
Mar 5 2009, 08:11 PM
Hi Kate, it's normal! The corals simply aren't used to being walked on. My zoas would close up at first too, but after a while they adjusted and stay open when the sexies stand on them.
