I hadn't heard of Ken Hamm but I have read some of the work of Ken R. Miller and Tim Keller.

I am wondering where people around here come down on these issues.

Tim Keller is awesome! He is the most amazing, humble man but what a mind! His heart for people, especially the poor has inspired many to reach out instead of keeping churches $$$ inside religious circles to service their own.

I would highly recommend you check out Ken Hamm. He makes science & faith so clear that even a right brainer like me can understand it! laugh.gif
Carinya
Here's someone who is working to integrate science & religion. He spoke at my church & was very interesting.

Thank God For Evolution (book)

Although I bought the book, I have not read it yet. From the website:

"Thank God for Evolution presents in a lively and accessible manner the reasons why it is now possible to view evolution as a spiritual process;"

My folks are pretty traditional Christians in a lot of ways but they always said (similar to Scott) that god made science, or made science possible. As an adult, I don't have all the religious beliefs my folks do, but I think their approach to integrating science & religion was pretty good -- at least in terms of being straightforward, simple & helpful in guiding their children toward being openminded.

I think there are a lot of gray areas in which strong ethics need to be applied to science. But I'm not sure I'd be prepared to say that those ethics are inherently religious.

Actually, I guess I'd say that better ethics need to be applied to a lot of religious actions also!

eh, Ill stay outta the religion talk. Im a Christian but, my job has changed alot of my views on things.
Mr. Fosi
So the answer I am hearing is that there must be a dialog between science and faith, yes?

Sorry to hear about the goby. sad.gif

Was that part of what you PMed me about?

Sorry about the goby weetie.

I think it's connected.

For those who are confused here, my tank has been looking a little "off" since I came back from my 6 days at BibleSue's.
The Goby was always a little difficult to feed.
I was feeding him thawed out Frozen Mysis.
He always hid out under this rock, so to feed him I had to suck the Mysis up into a pipette and put the tip of it down by his rock and slowly squirt Mysis out. Sometimes he'd catch them and eat them as they came out, sometimes he wouldn't.
I was basically trusting that my hermit, brittlestars and Clown would eat what the Goby let go by him.
I do know that the current from the Vortech would pick up at least part of the uneaten Mysis and when it got blown out into the water column, the Clown would eat it.
Anyway, I think there were 2 issues going on.
I think the Goby wasn't eating as much as he should, even though we did our best to feed him adequately.
I also think the tank may have been going through a mini-cycle, possibly from uneaten food, possibly from the increased bio-load, possibly from the small liquid junk that thaws out with the Mysis in the water.
In an effort to counteract what was happening, I only fed the Goby one single Mysis last night. I mixed up water overnight and did a WC today, and was just getting ready to thaw some more Mysis to feed tonight when I saw his dead body.
BibleSue
Oh, NOOOOO! I am so sorry! He was so pretty!
Mr. Fosi
Why not strain the mysis of it's cube juice and add back tank water instead? I've found that they sink better when you do that and you end up with less dissolved stuff.

Whew! Just got caught up here after a couple days out of my normal routine.

Heavy stuff for WL. Some of us have touched this subject before- and only in passing really.

I was raised a catholic, but in my years I have seen too many bad things happen to too many good people to believe in a supreme being. " The Lord works in mysterious ways" only goes so far.

Since we have engaged in discussion on such a delicate subject I feel the need to add this...

I got to a church plant of Keller's Redeemer Pres. in Brooklyn smile.gif His vision for NYC is really cool. I look around my neighborhood and all the old, established churches are turning into apartment complexes, but our church that meets in a high school cafeteria is really vibrant. It's a beautiful thing.

Edit: Sorry, I think our church is beautiful - not the fact that the old churches are disappearing. I cringe every time I see a church that's now apartments.

Doofus! You didn't read far enough. Where does it say that God is good keeps everyone from doing bad stuff? He says that in this world we will have trouble but that He will not only give us the strength to go through it but use it for good in our lives. Many things I didn't think I would make it through, I found myself thankful for later because it was useful to me or someone else. What is useful about a stubborn husband that stays up on a roof in the middle of a mini stroke? I'll have to get back to you on that one later when I find out. Right now it feels a bit stressful but I keep giving it back to God to help me carry it. MEN! tongue.gif

...not from doing bad stuff.

Seen too many good people stricken with sickness, too many good people die far too young- too much pain, suffering, fighting, killing and dieing - for any one all powerful supreme being to allow. Doesn't make sense. Not at all. What good can be found from those planes hitting those buildings? From the war that followed? From the many wars that have been and some that continue? The human race has not learned how to live in peace in how many years, can "he" not fix this? If he is the creator it sounds like a design fault....

I had actually typed MUCH more than that in response Susan, but.....in not wanting to sound petty, selfish, or to be seeking sympathy I deleted it.

You have your faith and I think that's great. My Mother, crippled most of her adult life still has hers and I wouldn't dream of trying to take it from her. Dad died of cancer some 20 years ago and if ever a man was needed by his wife and family....

I wuvs ya Sue, hope you know that. But here we will always agree to disagree. flower.gif grouphug.gif

God didn't make people robots & he didn't promise Heaven on earth. Evil exists & some of it touches each of us.

I hear you about your Dad. I remember the feeling well. I was abandoned by my husband with 2 toddlers & a GED diploma but no job skills. I was so shy I wouldn't leave my house cuz I might have to talk to someone I didn't know. I moved near my parents & got a job right away in bookkeeping at a newspaper. ohmy.gif We had $20 a month for food that first year. I kept my budget sheets cuz I still can't believe we survived.

I spent 6 1/2 years learning answers to some of your points. Those were hard & very painful years & I have had many more since that time but I learned that God is faithful even to the point of miracles in the life of those who love Him & serve Him. I just wish everyone could experience life this way. I am who I am today largely because of the bad stuff that has happened to me where I couldn't but God could. Because of it, I know that I know that He is real & even if I am the only one that believes it, that's OK. I love you & I pray for your Mom! Thanks for being such a good friend! wub.gif

Just dropping by to say Hi Weets. Sorry about losing the Goby. I have had a Tanagora for about 2 months and have given up worrying about if it is getting enough to eat, must be if it's still around, as I was over feeding just to please it. Am now dealing with low pH because of the left overs I guess.

Okay, Okay, I know I lead a somewhat sheltered life, but I do so love cereal. What with all the photoshopping that goes on around here I just assumed that was what Weetabix was too, then I saw it in the grocery store yesterday. Got the old :slapforehead" feeling. Too funny. Thought about changing my username to "Cream of Wheat" or "Quick Grits" but I've had "Yardboy" far too long (20 years) to change now. Ya'll have a very interesting social networking format here though. I'll bet Facebook is jealous.
