Well, I've gone & done it now. I picked up adinsxq's light & got in on the Vortech group buy. Now, if my tank & stand will just get here we can get this show on the road. Hopefully Mon. fingersx01.gif

Well meeting the great Mr. Fosi is certainly worth a lot...
and heck, I'd be able to deliver your "fix" in person...
and I'm pretty sure it's actually 2.5 hrs, not 5...
(made the drive several times while I was attending college in Columbia)
but I still don't really know that I have a way to do it.

Hubby and I share one car, so it's kinda hard to do something like that.
Bummer, right?
Unless we could talk Susan into a road trip....

I don't think she'll be able to wait that long. He takes FOREVER to designs things just right. It also has to fit in between his other jobs, errands & distractions. To his credit, he does good work!

Headed to S. FL the end of next month but no trips planned to Ashville ATM. Where are we talking? I need DETAILS! You know I'm always game for a road trip.

She's right, I don't fancy a 6 month wait for a stand.

Fosi is in Columbia, SC. Remember Columbia? wink.gif wink.gif
I hooked up with a Handsome, Dark-haired Doofus there.

Hey Fosi, did I hear ya right, you said you'd meet us partway???

I don't even remember what he wanted for that tank...

Like a Weetie's Lounge Relay!
And we could have prizes 'n stuff!!
Mr. Fosi
I'm not volunteering him for anything, I'm just wondering if he would be willing to do it.

He offered it to me but I don't have the room for it and I have my own 40B sitting in my wife's grandmother's basement in Erie, PA.

You need a new tank, it's already drilled, it comes with a sump... It's just a couple hours away. Maybe less if you can talk him into splitting the difference. He wants to be rid of it so he may go for it if you ask him.
bonsai reefer
If it could go to a good cause I might be able to talk the wife in to letting me take it some distance to meet up with you weet. All I'm askin for them is what I have in them .Now that I have a sea max 250 I need it gone. Both tanks are brand new never seen water. And I have a huge box of new stuff in the attic that was going to go in to this tank.Mabye foss could ride shot gun.
yardboy
I know this is kinda old topic, but thanks Weetie for that drilling glass video. I always wondered if the Dremel method is better and now I see it is! That crap looks dangerous, to me and the glass.
While working out details of a ppossible road trip, have you considered an external overflow? I have one on a 40L breeder and it works great. I've actually never put one on a display but two of my frag tanks have them. You live and learn I guess.
dtfleming
I drilled my 40. with a diamond bit holesaw. Key is to go SLOW and let the bit do the work. also make sure you have lots of water running over it. I dont trust doing it with a dremel. Also drilling the bottom of tanks is dangerous, as most are tempered.
Mr. Fosi
Dremel rocks. cool.gif

Just score the glass with the ball bit and you don't have to worry about spalling.

I'm so bummed, my Zoas/Palys really are not looking right and I don't know what's going on.
Did a 3g WC yesterday, have cleaned all pumps, did double-strength lugol's dips on affected Zoas/Palys.
Still not looking good today. sad.gif
Getting ready to do a Furan-2 dip on a few of the zoas that actually look sick and not just ticked off.

Weetabix7
Well I finally have some good news to report!
The last week and a half or so I've been having problems with my Nano-Remora skimmer.
It just wasn't skimming, looked like very little foam production.
I had already cleaned it recently, but it didn't seem to make any difference.
With everything going on in the tank, I decided to try one last intensive cleaning.
Took it off the tank, emptied out water, cleaned MJ900, stuck a flex brush up the PVC connection from PH to skimmer body, removed lil white screw and did exploratory cleaning w/flex brush and Q-tips.
Had an interesting moment when I turned it back on and it spewed a jet of water straight up in the air! ohmy.gif
Forgot to put lil white screw back in. blush.gif
Remedied that and when I got it going again it started producing the most foam I think I've ever seen out of it. It's honestly producing 4-5x the amount of foam it was before.
BOY was I relieved, I was honestly starting to wonder if either the skimmer or the MJ900 was defective!
Tank residents are alrdy looking happier, including some of the annoyed Zoas.
I still have a couple frags I need to Furan2 dip, but the outlook is greatly improved.

On a different but interesting note (at least to me), my 6 yo was playing on the floor by me while I was cleaning the skimmer. He was putting coins in a cup and making a wish with each one he put in.
He started out with the kind of wishes you'd expect from a 6 yo-- he wanted $10,000 to spend on toys, wanted 10, 000 Bakugan (don't ask, you either know or you don't), wanted to have lots of candy, etc.
But then he started wishing that his brother and I were both 6 yo so we could play with him like he does (I was touched), wishing I never got headaches (I get migraines), wishing that all the people on earth never had to get sick.
I was impressed cause most 6yo's are much too self-centered to even think of stuff like that. When you're 6, you're universe pretty much centers around you and what you want.
I love it that he was thinking outside of that.
Needreefunds
......sounds like his Mom if you ask me.

ya know, always thinking of others.

Hey guys, what do you think of this for a tank stand?
http://knoxville.craigslist.org/fuo/1054849971.html

Does it look sturdy enough?
It's the right dimensions for what I need, and I like the look of it.
bonsai reefer
My imported japanese zoas almost crashed my tank over the last few days aswell they started to develope a white weblike formation over them and were starting to desinagrate After some reserch i found it was Beggiatoa sp. Lost all of them( had 45 frags of 20 plus on each frag.) .Also fos the frag I took home we discussed has zoa pox.Getting some furan 2 tomorrow to treat it.Keeping fingers crossed also doing a 20 gallon 50% wc in the frag tank tomorrow. This hobby is bumming me out this week mad.gif sad.gif When I took them out they all smelled like death so I pitched them.
SPerry
I like the stand but where you gonna put the sump?

We gots LOTS of snow!!!! My dawg is not amused.

Mr. Fosi
I wouldn't use a TV stand... I just wouldn't be able to trust it.

The japanese zoas! ohmy.gif sad.gif That sucks. Did the ones at the store take a dive as well?
Weetabix7
Oh man, that TOTALLY sucks on the Zoas Bonsai, I'm really sorry.
Ouch. mellow.gif
That sounds like a pretty serious infection too. Once they reach the point of smelling like death, it's usually not possible to save them. There's only one thing I've found that SOMETIMES works, and that's taking some KM Tech-D and using a small paintbrush to paint the undiluted solution on the affected area, and leave it setting out for 3-5 mins with that solution on. Then rinse before returning to the tank.
Bonsai, did you run across any info on how to treat Beggiatoa? Can you post a link to where you found that info? I'd be interested in reading about it.
I'm using my last Furan2 tablet on a few of the Zoa frags today, I'm hoping that will be enough cause it'll be a few days til I can get more in.

Scott, that is a LOT of snow!
My kids would love it. smile.gif
As for the sump, my stand and sump will not be set up in the standard formation of Display on top of stand with sump underneath in cabinet.
There's a couple of reasons for this.
The Sump will also double as a Propagation tank, so I need it to be visible and not hidden away in a cabinet.
But since it will be utilitarian and not especially attractive, I want the Prop/Sump to be in a place where it doesn't matter if it isn't pretty.
So I'm putting the Display on a Living Room wall, on top of a Dresser that is 34" high.
The Sump will go on a Kitchen wall that is at a 90 degree angle to the LR wall the Display is on, so it will be just around the corner. I need something lower to put the Sump to use gravity for the Overflow, but not so low that you have to get down on your hands and knees to see it.
That's why I was looking at that table, it's just the right height and length, is attractive, and looked sturdy (at least to me).
Basically the the Display and Sump will on walls at 90 degree angles to each other, with the Display higher and the Sump Lower.
Mr. Fosi
Prolly no road-trip huh? It was worth a shot. wink.gif

In other news: I saw bluebastion today and I found out why he hasn't been around or updating his tank thread... It sprung a leak. ohmy.gif He had to take it down! He brought all his livestock to our LFS some time ago.

I was sorry to hear it but he isn't too sorry; he was ready to move on.

I'm very sorry to hear about bluebastion, that was really an amazing tank.

He has a lot of stuff he likes to do and he tends to go from one thing to another and reefing has stuck a long time.

I think he got all the livestock he wanted, it was setup like he liked and there wasn't much left to do so it got kinda boring. He's been doing some other stuff hobby-wise, stuff that doesn't take as much time/money and isn't as prone to sudden catastrophic failure.

It seems as if he's doing well and if I'm lucky, I'll see a bit more of him in the following months since my wife and I are going back to our old church.

Saw cuttlefish eggs and a baby. Also saw a nautilus. It made my day.

I also got a corn snake and Teresa (my wife) touched it. First time ever. Thought you all should know.

I HAZ A BRAND NEW VORTECH MP20!!!!!!!!

omgomgomg.gif omgomgomg.gif omgomgomg.gif omgomgomg.gif omgomgomg.gif

Now I just gotta figure out how to set it up right.....
Weetabix7
Does anyone know what the glass thickness is on a 20L tank?
I need to know that to program the Vortech, and I can't seem to find it even though I tried Googling it.
SPerry
How did you get a $300 powerhead?

take a ruler and measure the glass at the corner.

Dude, if I could find a ruler I wouldn't be askin'!

I think the Lil Destructobots made off with it...
SPerry
wild guess 1/8"
Mr. Fosi
I believe it is between 3/16" and 1/4".

1/8" is the thickness of 10g and less.
Weetabix7
So I got the Vortech MP20 in.
(20L glass thickness is 3/16" btw. Got lucky and Dad stopped by and had a tape measure in his car.)
Unfortunately my two lil guys were absolute MONSTERS tonight and I didn't get to spend much time observing the effect of the Vortech on the tank.
Had enough time to get it set up and watch for just a lil bit.
I have it on Reef Crest mode at 50% max power.
This thing is STRONG.
I see why they call it a Vortech, when I had it on full strength I could see an actual vortex of water forming above it as water was sucked into the pump!
I think this thing could go on a 30g with ease and possibly even a 40g, depending on how you set it up.

Interestingly enough, I think it may be causing my Nano-Remora skimmer to skim more efficiently.
Not sure exactly how, but when I looked at it just now there was a much thicker, denser head of foam overflowing out into the skimmer cup, and the Vortech is the only thing that's different.

You're probably right.
My only concern is that my skimmer intake might get somewhat clogged and not skim as efficiently.
Do you think that's cause for concern?
I have an AC HOB I could stick on the tank for the night to pull junk outta the water column if you think I should.
