Do some research on glasscages. Some people have gotten some great tanks from them. And some people their tanks were horrible and leaked.
Weetabix7
GC AIO wouldn't have rear chambers. There would only be one wall, dividing display portion from refugium/frag growout portion.
I'm not worried about toxins from frags, although it's an intersting issue.
My Nano-Remora Protein Skimmer would be on it, as well as Poly-Filters for Chemical filtration.

Yes, I've heard that.
That aside, what do you think?
If I did the 20 Long and had it drilled into the 10g, I'm wondering how hard it would be to drill the holes exactly even with each other, since the connections/bulkheads, etc. would have to go straight across.
dtfleming
Not hard to do alot of people have done it. Though i dont think that i would put them side by side. Some how I would raise or lower the sump.

Dangitall, what's the big deal about raising or lowering the sump???
Why is that necessary?
I know it's what everyone does, but why does it HAVE to be that way, aside from the fact that it's the usual format?
In my case, I really can't do that.
I HAVE to have things side by side on the kitchen counter.
Weetabix7
BUUUUUMP!!!!
C'mon guys, I need more input!!!

I think the AIO from GC sounds kewl. I'm one of the people that has had great luck with them but definitely be aware of the other results people have had. I think it would look neat to have things split up in one tank. I also don't understand the need for separate levels other than it being the standard way of doing things. I've seen some big systems where frag tanks are on tables behind the display and only the sump or fuge is lower, mainly because of size and weight constraints of such large tanks. Either way, I look forward to the progression.

Option #1 hands down.

Option #1 has much greater surface area.
GC's build quality is um, subpar.
Besides, a 20L is only $28 at Petsmart...
Weetabix7
I think I'm leaning towards the 20L hooked up to a 10g option myself.
I'm wondering whether I should just go ahead and do it without drilling and plumbing them together tho.
I already have an overflow box or two, as well as U-tubes and the necessary plumbing to just connect them over the tops/sides of the aquariums rather than drilling them.
That way, if the 10g sump thing doesn't work out, it's pretty simple to disconnect it.
If I drill 'em, I'm stuck with them that way.
Monkfish
Have you considered a 30breeder and just AIO it as they are pretty wide? I just saw one today at the LFS and i thought it was a really cool shaped tank. Just a thought. If you were to use the 20g long thats 12" width the 30 breeder would leave 6" width left over for built in sump. So total sump if it were 6x36x12 would be 11.22 gallons. Could always make display like 11 inch width and grab another inch on built in sump too?

30 Breeder

36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 12 15/16

Idea of looks on sketchup.

But yeah if they are gonna be side by side just go ahead and use the u tubes instead of putting holes in the tanks and not being able to use them later on because of it.
dtfleming
Cuz gravity tends to have a part in it.
BibleSue
I have U-tubes on my prop tank/sump that are side by side. I have to clear out air bubbles every few days.

The idea Monkfish had is like what I did on my contest sump. Very easy to do I no waiting for the drilling. laugh.gif

I second the 30 breeder. Otherwise, stay away from glasscages- too many bad stories.

I'm gonna check at the LFS today to see if they can get a 30 breeder and how much it would be.
Even if they can get it the cost might be prohibitive, but we'll see.

If I can't do that, I think I'll go with Option #1.

Thanks for all the input, everyone, it does help. flower.gif

And Lani, WHAT THE SHMECKLY DID YOU DO WITH YOUR AV ??????? ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif
I thought you were xbwolfx at first, and then I was like, "Why is wolf quoting me in his sig??"

Got some really good books and DVD's, and a shirt with the Xmen and Storm front and center in honor of our little avatar thing we did not long ago.
Also got a lil bit o spending money to use towards the upgraded T5HO bulbs I need to get soon.
Had a blast with the fam this morning and we're heading to the theater to watch Bolt with the kids shortly.
Should be interesting/fun, it'll be "Lil Guy's" first experience in a movie theater.
Hope you guys are having as awesome of a Christmas as I am.
I'll check in later, I expect to see a few pics and I'll see if I can get one of me in the Xmen shirt.
Have fun! grouphug.gif

Option #2
SPerry
I say option 1 drilled.

I am taking my 15gal frag tank down, drilling it and adding a 15gal sump. I need better nutrient export. Once I get a sapphire skimmer I will be good to go. Guess I am going with a 150W SunPod. I wanted to get the Outer Orbit HQI/T5 but it wont fit. I mean what kind of tank is it made for? 150W @ 24x15 is lame.

I hope it goes well with the changes you're making.
Are you saying you need better nutrient export cause of the algae issues you mentioned having?
I still have 3 of your frags that didn't sell yet, if you'd like me to bring them to the Nashville swap for you. They have aiptasia on them right now, but there's a Peppermint Shrimp in that tank who is methodically making it's way thru the Aips, so they might be gone by the time the Swap rolls around.

I agree that Option #1 drilled is best. However, it's looking like I'm gonna be forced to do Option #1 with U-tubes instead due to timing issues. I'm having some really cool stuff shipped out to me at the beginning of January, so I really need to have this set up before then so it has time to stabilize a bit.
There's really no way for me to have it drilled until 1/1, and I need to have this going before then, so U-tubes it is.
I'm using completely cycled and aged LR and about 75% of the water will be taken from existing systems as well, but anytime you do something like this, there's always a period of adjustment no matter how you do it.
I already have the 20L, and I'll probably get this started next Tuesday or so. I have some frags I have to ship out on Monday, and I don't want to do any kind of major changes before the frags go out since shipping causes at least some stress as it is.
clownfish1124
i got out voted... 2000000000000000000 to 1.
oh well... whatcha getting weetie?
SPerry
Yeah the algae just got on my OCD nerves. You can have the frags, I will prob have a couple of extras for you at the swap. I need to empty my frag tank before drilling.

Merry Christmas to all from Daniel, me, and the puppies!

I hope everyone else enjoyed their Christmas as much as we did.

Great pics Amber!

Had a great day with friends and family.

Finished the night off playing Po-ke-no with Donna, Crystal and her boy friend.

Yup, just sitting around with some hot buttered popcorn playing a card game and acting like total goofballs until almost midnight.

Its all about the simple things methinks. smile.gif

I can only hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I.

Weetabix7
That sounds great Richie, we had an awesome day too.
I have this mental snapshot of one of my favorite moments from yesterday: my little almost-3-yr.-old staring enraptured at the movie screen while slowly puttin popcorn in his mouth.
It was his first experience in a Movie Theater, he was SOOO cute!
We saw "Bolt", which was a great movie.

Amber, great pics of the pups, they look really cute. happy.gif

Merry "day After Christmas" everybody..

i found an new 8G biocube under the tree to take to my office..
wanted something for the desktop.

Going to need some advice on a few mods though..
im so use to the JBJ 28G this will be a new experience..

anybody know of any good 8g biocube Threads i can read?
need to replace the stock pump with a MJ.. the flow on the stock is horrible.
and i'm not quite sure what to put where.
sorry bout the jack Weets.

Anybody else get any Reef Gear from Santa?

Mercuryne
Weetabix7
No need to apologize Merc, you have an official license to hijack here.
In fact, we stay off-topic most of the time. happy.gif

That's great news on the Biocube, but I'm afraid I won't be much help on mods to it. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to AIO's, I've never had one.
I'd check with Stevie T or peruse the All In One Forum.

Hey, I'm supposed to bring your frags to the Swap on 1/17 instead of shipping them, right?
Lalani
Oh yeah, great pics, A! Is that D, editing photos on the computer? tongue.gif

Thanks guys for the appreciation of the pics. Gadget was being a camera hog.

And lani yep that would be Daniel either editing pics or surfing nano. laugh.gif
