Put my brand new MJ400 pump into the 20g long prop tank today, and ###### was flying everywhere ohmy.gif Way too much flow from that single pump sleep.gif , guess it'll just sit around until whenever I get a larger tank.

Oh, I guess I failed to mention that I put a Sure Flow 1600 MJ upgrade kit on it wink.gif This is the Algae Free company's version, but there's another brand, as well as all the DIY guides around the 'net. Only 5w of elec used with the MJ400 too, but it can do up to 2000gph on the MJ1200.

Screw paying $300+ for an overpriced pump, when you can get the same performance out of $30 (pump + mod).

The exact one I got - $15 from MD

I just got the sure flow MJ mod and Koralia 1 for my 30 cube. The MJ mod is too strong for my nano.
Daemonfly
Compared to airlifts, this might be one of the cheapest ways to get good flow in your larger prop tank.

~$30 for parts (perhaps a bit less for DIY) and only 5w usage makes them quite easy on the wallet.

Sure, MJ mods aren't entirely the newest thing this year, but for people who don't know about them, and want to set up a prop tank, they're a great option.

Just out of curiousity, what would you guess the flow rate to be on your modded mj400?
Daemonfly
All I can say is that my flow rate in the 20g long was bloweverythingofftheshelvesGPH.

From the vendor page

And then the stock MJ stats

MP600 120V/60Hz 7.5W 160gph (600lph) 53" 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.00" H
MP900 120V/60Hz 8.5W 230gph (870lph) 46" 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.25" H
MP1200 120V/60Hz 20W 295gph (1110lph) 69" 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.25" H

For $13 and 5w power usage + the $15 mod for ~1300gph, the MJ400 is a contender, imho.

is tis the same as the eco-mod they are selling? that fits all mj's? 4-12?
Daemonfly
This brand fits all MJ models, and even has an optional larger propeller for the 1200 that pushes it's output to 2000gph.

The Ecomod one is here: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~Sea...es~vendor~.html

The Algae Free one comes with some handy pivoting mount that you can then attach to the standard MJ mounting systems. I'm not sure if the Ecomod one comes with such accessories or not. I don't have the Ecomod brand one, so can't really comment on it.
reefer123
was it too harsh on your corals? or just blowing sand everywhere? i have a bare bottom but i dont want my duncans torn to shreds
Daemonfly
Too harsh on many of the corals; leathers, duncans, etc... in the 20g long. Great, cheap flow, but just needs a bigger tank. I got 2 small korallias for the 20g long instead.

If it's all just SPS, then it might be fine.
