I have some Mollies, platties, tinfoil barbs, bala sharks, tiger barbs, columbian sharks, gourami, pleco, rosy barbs, and some others. It's cool because it is so low maintenance.

Amazing, isn't it? biggrin.gif

Sounds like a nice assortment!

Oh ok thanks, I wasn't sure what your lighting was...

Quick question that I forget the answer... would you be able to give me some examples of:

LPS
Softies
and SPS

I forget what corals fit in which category blush.gif
LPS are frogspawn, hammers, torchs, candycane, acans, anything with a hard, stoney skeleton.
Softies are things like mushrooms, zoanthids, xenia, leathers, GSP, and such. All soft.
SPS are stoney corals with small polyps. Acro, monti, and things that tend to look more like tree branches. With some encrusting corals as well.

Not much has been going on. Just keeping up with my husbandry. My clam died. Not sure why. Next time I will make a spot closer to the light. I fragged and moved some stuff around. I started a pico tank and moved some of the frags over there. I went picture crazy because I like to look back and I like to share. We all know NRs all love pictures.

I have no idea what these are called.

These either.

Very nice updated pics. Glad to see you are still keeping up with everything. I especially like the macros in the back. Always looks more natural to me with some macro in a reef tank.

Do you have pics of the stock pump in chamber one? This was the post I was trying to find about moving the stock pump to chamber one. I was trying to fit it in but it didn't seem to go any way I tried.

It is a tight fit past the silicon but it will fit. It is set up EXACTY like the return in chamber 3.

How is that Madarin doing? i hear everyone say they are very difficult in such a small tank. i have the JBJ 28g HQI, and want to add one down the line, but was hesitant, as most people on here dont keep them. Any advice would be awesome. i plan on keeping 2 clowns, yellow head jawfish, firefish, then hopefully the Mandarin. It just looks like you have everything running so smoothly, and I am just getting to start adding things, I would pick your brain. Great looking tank, I am looking to model mine very similar.

Hey dood, nice stuff! I think Gilbert is sitting on a pagoda cup coral in that pic. Do a google. It is considered LPS and your is very nice colors.

The madarin was in a breeding net for about 2 weeks and I added frozen brine twice a day until he started to eat it. Now I turn off the pumps and add the frozen brine in the area he usually hangs out. The cold frozen chunk of food floats for awhile but sinks after a few minutes. He just picks the brine off the rock and sand. His belly looks good and he eats every day. I plan on introducing some pods to help supplement his feeding.I have amphipods but I would like to see some trigger pods and some copipods too. There is a place that sells huge numbers of pods for $100. Just need to find where I saw it.

Well it's been 6 months and so far everything is thriving. I took 6 Xenia frags to a LFS and got some credit. Basically I got a cool zoa frag for next to nothing. My acro is growing. I was worried for awhile but I see growth. I sold my baby clown. Fragged my FS and added it to my pico. I'm also going to frag my zoas when I get a chance. I also added some Sun coral. These guys are pigs. and I'm slowly teaching them to come out during the evening instead of over night.

Well on to the pictures, enjoy!

Little tiny hitch-hiker crab in the Acro. It's been there since I got the frag and never moves.

Wow, Dood, somehow I missed your late March pics so it's been pic heaven looking at your thread today! Your tank looks wonderful and you have some super specimens. I esp. like the bicolored candy cane, and that brittle star is amazing!

The shot of your brittle star looks good - amazing detail! I think you are the first person I've seen on here that appears to have the same variety of candy-cane as me (the brown with a flourescent green center).
Dooderino
Hello fellow AIO'ers. It's been awhile since I have posted any updates on my BC29. It's now 32 weeks (8+ months) old. A lot has been happening outside my Nano's viewing window. Last time I posted I had a new pico5.5 and some old corals that were thriving.

I closed down my pico. I wasn't entirely happy with the look of the tank. I might get a Deco tank later but for now I just cleaned all the equipment and stored it in the garage. I moved all the pico stuff into my BC29. Most of the rocks were moved into the back chamber to expand on the 'fuge I'm "one day" going to build. For now I still have my chaeto and caulerpa in the main display. But it actually doesn't bother me. Maybe that's why I havn't built the 'fuge light.

I sold my tiny clown and my six-line. The Pico ended up with the bigger B&W Ocellaris(Oreo) a emerald crab(Oz), some hermits, an anemone crab and a pom pom crab. All were moved to the BC29 with no ill effects. Of course I only see the 2 pom pom crabs on rare occasions.
My firefish also died. He just didn't come out from his bed one day. It was a VERY spooked fish. The first firefish I had was very social and was always in sight, but this one would see me coming and flee. He only came back out when he smelled food.

I have also lost a couple of hermits and snails for various reasons but I do still have my original turbo snails and a couple of my original hermits. The red star (USSR) is still doing good. My brittle star is still has all it's legs. My blood shrimp is still doing good too. The mandarin is still eating brine shrimp daily and my clown goby (Gilbert) is still hanging around his Acro branches.

My newest acquisitions include another Onxy Percula and a Copperband Butterfly fish. The new percula and the old one hit it off great. Not one fight. Both perculas HATE Oreo. Oreo is limited to the back of the tank and has actually taken up residency in the grape caulerpa. The percula are now hosting my pink tipped frog spawn, which I have fragged twice now.

The copperband(trumpet) was added to battle the aiptasia and tube worm infestation. He will also eat mysis shrimp too.

I have been religious on my husbandry. Water changes every 1-2 weeks, skimmer for 14 hours a day. I'm still using the B-Ionic, Chromaplex, Reef Trace, Reef Vitamins, Iodine and phytoplankton. Everything seems to be good with the water conditions.

Well here are some pictures. Be warned there are A LOT of them!!!

As you can see the rics have really taken off!

A common sight every time I go near the tank. All they want is food.

The button polyps on the left were my first corals. They were hitch hikers, well one was.

Each of the Zoa groups started life as about 10 heads on a square marble puck.

The Neon striped mushrooms really glow in the actinics. The frag started with one head. Now there are over 10 on the rock and 2 more that fell off and have found new homes amongst the rock work.

Here is some Acro. Slow growers. The Acan has added about 10 heads but they are all still very small. I don't know if the yellow scroll coral has grown at all.

The left side of the tank. You can see this where I keep the caulerpa and where Oreo has made his home.

The pink candycane in the middle started off as 4 heads and now has 12. It was one of my first purchases. The frogspawn started as 6 heads and is now 12. The branch in the front has 6, the top left has 4 and the top right has 2. The far top left is a 2 headed torch.

These palys were closed for nearly a month. They have doubled since and have a wonderful color.

This is why I bought the copperband butterfly fish. Aiptasia, it's showing up in various places and mostly between corals.

This is just one of 3 frags of this spectacular morph of a candycane.

I thought this favia was a goner too. It was very low in color for awhile. It's finally coming around.

I bought this perc on sale for $20. He was a bully in the beginning but has settled in nicely.

Here are the pair. The female is behing the male. She is a lighter shade of orange. You can also see some of that cool candycane and the original green striped neon mushroom in the back ground.

The GSP has spread to numerous rocks. You can also see how big the pink candycane has gotten. The Tonga LR was a cool piece in my pico but now looks fantastic in the BC29.

Here is the Copperband. I will keep it until it gets too big or I think it is not feeding enough.

Gilbert doing what he does best.

Anemone Crab

These palythoas started life as a 15 head frag. I think they have grown 500%.

Dooderino
This photo with flash really shows some detail. If you look right of the candycane you can see the yuma rock. They are not as colorful as some but have grown a lot since I got them.

This is the smaller anemone crab. The zoa patch he is in started with 8 heads.

This is what I call "Flaming Star". It has a red skirt and the center is a yellowish white with a dark back ground. Its hard to get a picture. This one is top down.

This zoa has a peach colored center with purple and the green skirt is a cool touch.

Amazing update pics. Good to see you getting back into it full swing keeping everything alive and thriving. The growth it great on everything. IF it wasn't for the FTSs you could definitely pass this off as a bigger tank everything looks so good.

That candy cane is my favorite morph. If you ever wanted to trade a head for something let me know.

How long have you had the scarlet cleaner? I wanted one but got the baby skunk instead cause he was really small. I can't remember how big the full grown scarlets were. Do you have any better pics of him?

Do you plan on getting rid of Oreo or keeping him letting him be the odd man out? He's probably jealous he's not getting any.

Oreo might find a new home in my next pico project. I think I'm going to get a Finnex 4g. The candycanes were in rough shape when I got them and are now starting to grow. As soon as the start to split I will start selling. I do have a better pic of the shrimp(Sparks) but I might have to dig a little.

Ok, found one.

I saw both my pom pom crabs last night. They were waving at each other from about an inch apart. One of them has an egg clutch. I would be cool if they reproduced but I really doubt that will happen.

You can grow soft corals with the stock lights but an upgrade will make the colors pop and the growth explode. Plus you can have some SPS and LSP without problems.

My first piece of SPS came with a crab. I never bothered with removing it because it never left the acro it came on. So today I was bored and thought I would do a little research. This is what I found.

"Stony corals are the foundation of coral reef ecosystems and form associations with other reef species. Many of these associations may be ecologically important and play a role in maintaining the health and diversity of reef systems, rendering it critical to understand the influence of symbiotic organisms in mediating responses to perturbation. This study demonstrates the importance of an association with trapeziid crabs in reducing adverse effects of sediments deposited on corals. In a field experiment, mortality rates of two species of branching corals were significantly lowered by the presence of crabs. All outplanted corals with crabs survived whereas 45-80% of corals without crabs died within a month. For surviving corals that lacked crabs, growth was slower and tissue bleaching and sediment load were higher. Laboratory experiments revealed that corals with crabs shed substantially more of the sediments deposited on coral surfaces, but also that crabs were most effective at removing grain sizes that were most damaging to coral tissues. The mechanism underlying this symbiotic relationship has not been recognized previously, and its role in maintaining coral health is likely to become even more critical as reefs worldwide experience increasing sedimentation." It is our hope that by documenting the coral and crab species found as commensals we can help to determine which crab species should be targeted for breeding efforts. If we are to ever transplant any of the branching corals out onto the reefs as a restoration project, we will have to include a variety of coral crab species as well.

An interesting beneficial crab that helps keep SPS going strong.
This is the actual species that is in my tank.

Well it's just over 9 months. I have gotten some pretty good deals IMO. Well they might not be good deals but I bought them either way. I started dosing Magnesium. The tank seems to be doing ok. I sold my Copperband. It wasn't attracted to the aptasia. I might get some peppermint shrimp later. I have been leaning towards invertebrates. I like the little critters. So I'm thinking about getting some different hermits, maybe a variety of shrimp. I'm not sure yet. I need to research what is compatible. I have also be on the look out for another fish. Oreo my B&W clown needs to find a new home. He is always being picked on. He does well and holds his own but he needs to go. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Bluespot Jawfish. It will be my first expensive fish. I hope it does ok. No plans on it's arrival because I need to find Oreo a new home and scale back on some of my coral.

Well on to the pictures...

I traded Oreo and some other excess corals into a LFS for a Royal Gramma. So far it is really doing well. It is younger and actually a little smaller than my Percs. No aggressiveness at all. My LFS should be getting some BSJ in today. I might also pick up a small firefish. They have some young ones at the LFS and I like to watch things grow. I will post pics tonight if I get some new inhabitants.
Dooderino
I suck at the intraweb.
Dooderino
Well as it turns out the LFS didn't get the fish in till yesterday. I also rescued some fish from a friend that was moving. I'm going to trade them in for credit. I did get the firefish last week. Tiny little guy. Cute as all get out. He disappeared for a few days and thought he was a gonner but he has been hiding in the pvc hole I built for the bluespot.

My plans with the bluespot is to cut the bottom of a 2 liter bottle and use it at a funnel to point the new bluespot to it's new home. That's the plan anyways. Wish me luck.

I also witnessed my mandarin eating pellets. So I have taken it the next level and started to use the baster to locate the pellets in a specific place in the tank. So far it eats about 10 pellets a day. Weird. It is kind of a pain in the butt but he seems to like them. The hardest part is feeding the other fish, crabs, and shrimp first. I found that my acro crab likes a pellet too.

I saw both my pom pom crabs out together again too. One has a clutch of eggs too! You never know!

I have noticed a little more algae growth than usual lately as well. So once a week I buy a new bulb and in a few weeks I will have new lights again. I also took the LR out of chamber 2 and shook the crap out of it in some siphoned water. Changed the Chemi-pure out and cleaned the back chamber floors. I cleaned the pumps while they we're out. Hopefully that fixes it.

I will post some pictures of the changes later then sooner. My PC is having issues.

Thanks for looking!
Dooderino
So I picked up the new Blue Spotted Jawfish yesterday. I installed the gutter guard modification to keep him out of the back chambers and drilled 10 half inch holes in the access lid for cooling purposes. All while he was getting used to my water.

Then I took the sterilized 2 liter bottle and cut the lid off leaving a hole about 1 inch in diameter. I cut the bottom almost all the way off to keep it like a flip top. I inserted the bottle and put the small hole over the pvc hole/cave I built. I then flipped open the lid and placed the fish in the bottle.
Seemed like everything was on track. I put a rock on top of the bottle and walked away to let the BSJ settle down.

After an hour I came back and found that the BSJ had not taken to the hole. Hmm. So I pulled him out of the bottle flipped it upside down after taking the bottom completely off and put the BSJ back in the bottle. Now he had the hole and about 2 inches all around it to work with. I walked away for another hour.

When I returned I noticed that he had not moved. The firefish had come out of the hole but the BSJ had no interest in the home I made for it. So I reached in and removed the bottle. Instantly the firefish dove back in the hole. At least some one is going to use it. The BSJ slowly went into the rock cave. The rock cave is a natural cave I made using a rock with a bowl shape. My brittle star had taken up residency for the last 2 weeks. The BSJ (I'm going to name him Bob) almost instantly began to clean the cave. All the sand that was in there was spit out the front door. Then Bob started to use the rubble and shells I placed around the hole and built himself a wall. It took him about an hour but he finally convinced the brittle star to leave. This was a specticle in it's self. Bob tried really hard to be nice and move the star fish out one leg at a time. It was very entertaining. After about 2 hours he was tucked in his cave and defending the entrance from all crabs and snails. He actually picks up the small hermits and snails and moves them away.

When I woke up this morning he was still in his cave with the door shut. Very neat fish. I highly recommend a Jawfish to anyone that love to see action in the tank. I couldn't be happier with this decision.

Happy reefing!

hey dood! (remember that show on Nickolodeon?)

very interesting about the jawfish. Never really knew about them until you posted. Looked it up and they seem like a really cool fish. I was wanting to add another to my tank, but wanted one that wouldn't compete with the other inhabitants in there now. I'll have to look into them a little more.

great pictures! you upgraded the lights on your cube, but do you have any advice on different bulbs for the stock set up? Time to replace mine and I want to brighted it up a little if possible.

The BSJ can be a bit pricey but the Pearly/Yellowhead Jawfish is a good alternative for about 1/3 the cost. My LFS has one in their show tank that is pretty cool. I tried one awhile back and the first one went onto the filter pad in chamber 2 and the second one died a day after I got it for mysterious readons. So I gave up fro awhile.

You are pretty limited on the bulbs but I use "CORALIFE" with good results. If I were in your shoes and had a stock hood I would get on Full Actinic and one 50/50. That should add some blue to the tank and make your colors pop. But ask your LFS if you can try the 50/50 out and see if you like it. Maybe they will take it back if you don't. It's a lot of work taking the bulb cover off twice but if that what needs to be done then so be it.

If I had my way I would blow the $400+ on this fixture. http://www.aquacave.com/24-current-usa-out...ights-1166.html I think this would be the way to go!

Last night I was pretty busy with house work for a party tonight but I did get a chance to observe the tank for a while.

If you remember in a previous post I made I rescued a couple of fish from a friend. He had a Pajama Cardinal and a yellow tail Damsel. I really liked the bright blue of the damsel so I decided to keep it for a while and see how it does. Turns out that this fish is the "Village Idiot" of saltwater aquaria. Maybe not all damsels are this dumb but this one takes the cake.
Now I know that Damsels are aggressive and clown fish are in that family. When I released the yellowtail into the water column he went and hid, for about 30 seconds, then went exploring. First off he goes straight for the clown fishes Frogspawn and they bolt home to protect their digs. No biggy right? Well the yellow tail didn't get it and let the percs kick it's ass. No fight from the yellowtail. Now the Royal Gramma's(named Grammy for reasons described below) cubby is just below the percs in the rock. It is already holding down his fort because he doesn't like my hand. Being the friendly newcomer the yellowtail goes over to say hello. The Gramma flipped out. I didn't know he had such a big mouth. That's how it got it's name. So Grammy goes ninja on the yellowtail. So yellowtail is more like no tail he got his ass chewed so bad. I thought it was strange to see a fish go back for more. Now Bob does't tolerate anything near his home. What does the yellowtail do? You guessed it, it got right in Bob's face. Bob has a huge mouth but no bite, Bob shows his teeth and charges. This works pretty good because the yellowtail always retreats. The damsel never really hangs out in one spot. I have no idea where it goes when it gets dark. Maybe one day it will settle down but right now it's pure entertainment.

Happy reefing!

The SPS is growing. Slowly, but it is growing. I have the 4.36 Nanocustoms hood.

I re-did my aqua-scape for the fist time in a LOOONG time. Everything is doing well. My BSJ, Bob, is digging holes everywhere. My little firefish didn't make it. That was a bummer but other tan that all is well. Here are some pictures.

Dooderino
Well I had a bit of bad luck. My BSJ caught some kind of skin disease. In 2 days he was dead. Then a day following that my mandarin died. The other fish were fine but I did have a huge Ich outbreak. So I set up my hospital tank, caught the remaining fish and tossed them in. So far everything is back to normal. The Ich cleared up after a few days and everyone is eating. I'm pretty bummed out about my two favorite fish dying. It really sucks about the mandarin, it took a lot of time to train it to eat sinking pellets.
Dooderino
All the fish are still well. 40 days and 40 nights in QT will get old quick.

Very nice tank setup....

I like how you added the stock pump to chamber 1. I wanted to upgrade my pump to something around the 350gph range and was wondering how the 29bio would handle it. Seeing you have both stock and the Rio6hf, is there enough water flowing into the grate in chamber 1 so chamber 3 isn't drying out. I guess what I am asking is there enough water constantly flowing into chamber one to keep up with the demand of two pumps?

Thanks TUD, your tank is coming alone quite well too. It was an inspiration in the beginning stages of my own cube. The FS is growing like crazy. The torch hasn't grown much and the hammer is new. I started with 6 FS heads and since November last year it has grown to 16.

Chamber one is always the same water level as the display. Chamber two and three are always the same level. Chambers 2&3 are the ones that drop due to evaporation. I keep these chambers full. When I say full I mean within 1/2" from the bottom of the drip tray.

There is always enough water in chamber 1 to supply the pump in chamber 1. To do this mod you need to buy some loc-line, a bulk head, a couple of fittings (one for the loc-line and one as an elbow) and some tubing. Take out the false floor in chamber 1. Drain some water from the tank and install the bulk head into the false wall. Attach the fittings to the bulk head. One side will have the loc-line fitting and the loc-line configuration of your choice. The other will have a 90 degree elbow fitting. Just hook the tubing up to the fitting and then to the pump. My pump is at the bottom of chamber 1. It is almost indentical to the return set up in chamber 3.

I just read your whole thread, the jawfish was awesome. Id like to have one myself Ill have to research them suckers. You take good pictures to, I was impressed by some of the pics of your fish.

Are you going to replace your Jawfish or Mandarin?

Oh and the brine you fed your mandarin, were they adult brine or fresh hatched babies?
