By incredibly hot what range are you talking about? Mine is currently in my basement which has pretty stable temps all year and the tank is about a steady 79 degrees.
I'd say as much as 3-4 degrees, depending on how close you have it to the water. A small fan to cool the surface, should fix that problem though. MH lighting is quite desireable, but with the increased heat and the faster evap rate, you'll definitely want to pick up an ATO too (otherwise the salinity in your tank will fluctuate too much throughout the day)!

Thanks so much for your help, it looks like thats the light im going with, but im gonna pick up an ato and fan to go with it!

HAHAHA. The tank's still alive y'all and recovering quite well after the redbug medication. Lost all of the acros, but the rest of the tank is quite healthy. Purple & red mushrooms propagating everywhere. Monticaps are rapidly growing and adding tiers to their foundation. Deep purple coralline is has made the tank look very mature.
Need to sell & swap some pieces that have become way overgrown for this tank. Thinking to re-stock ACROS soon.
Pics to come in another month (or two)...
Thanks for your interest.

WE MISSED YOU WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING, CHEEZ!!!!!!
Okay, now I really need to get some info from you.
I recently won all 7 products from the Seachem Aquavitro line at a Frag Swap and I know you were trying those out.
Can you give me some info on how those worked for you?
Any special tips on the best way to use them?
Did you ever try the Vibrance/Iodide supplement?
Please don't go away again, and give us a FTS???

Hey mate,
Your tank is freaking awesome, I've also got an 18 x 18 x18 and im using the Aqua One Marisys 240 which is essentially the Rapids Pro unit. When I was putting my tank together I got back into Nano-reef.com and I saw your tank and thought yep, that's what I want to do, infact I nearly got that HOB filter you had too! But then I saw the Marisys and headed for the sump approach.
Just thought I'd share...
I've blocked up the about 3/4 of the water intake to try and get this thing to surface skim as well, I noticed you have the Fluval in there to do the job. Not sure if my mod is going to work, will be keeping an eye on the surface in the next couple of days. If it reduces the surface film then I won't have to put the Fluval in there.
I think it's drawing water from the surface now....

notice the curved line, thats the water level inside the grate....not sure if it will actually break up the surface though. Will adjust in more in the coming days I'm sure.

Almost 1 year after the redbug infestation, I am tentatively restocking this tank. It's been running since Oct of 2007, and relocated once in May of 2008. Several days ago, I replaced my 250W 20k with a new 250W 14K SPS BLue Life DE. I opted for this one versus the Phoenix 14K bc my ballast is magnetic. Apparently, the Phoenix requires electronic ballasts to fire up. In comparison to my old bulb, the SPS is 5 times as bright. The FTS shown above was taken with the pendant hung 2 feet from the water surface. I'll be lowering it approx 1/2" per day until it reaches about 11" from the water.
ORA Birds Nest
Nuclear Greens
I also added a nice green slimer frag and some variety of blue acro, but no photos of them yet. I expect these pieces to do well since my params have never been as stable. But we shall see...

Last night I spent 2 hours with my hands in the tank, which I always try to avoid if I can help it. Performed some desperately need re-org, frag mounting, and trimming of red nuisance macro algae that took over the tank last year. Requested the assistance of a lawnmower goby and a mini urchin to handle the rest.
It will take several months for vibrant color to be restored, but I am VERY PLEASED with the results. And this new halide bulb simply moves me. Pics tomorrow.

One of my favorite "Greens" in my tank is my Green Encrusting Gorgonian.
I actually have two frags right now if you want to get one.
They're currently unmounted, fragged them about a week or so ago.

Heh, browsing my thread might take a while, it's up to 160 pgs. now.
I've been busy while you were away.
I'll look for a pic.
Here ya go:

Wiry, red macro NOT included on frags!
Mr. Fosi got a frag from me recently, you can ask him how he likes it.
It's similar to GSP in some ways, but is much more delicate in appearance and a more intense metallic green.

Weetie, speaking of wiry red macro. HOW DO I GET RID OF IT? Aside from the unsightly mess it creates, is there any benefit (like Chaeto) it provides to the tank?
BTW: I am looking for a reliable yet INEXPENSIVE controller to keep my temp and pH in check. *Today, I left the fan on and window open by mistake, dropping the temp by 3 degrees in 30 minutes! Thinking about the RK Lite, but any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I honestly don't know.
I've had little bits of it in places here and there, but it's never grown out of control or caused a problem in my tank, so I don't sweat it.
Johnmaloney could help you on that one.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
I was willing to pay real dollars to anyone who would help me be rid of this wiry red macro. That will no longer be necessary. This urchin is single handedly plowing through this stuff and not leaving a trace of it in its path!!!!

Pooping steadily along the way, which I'm sure is good organic food for my sps.

250W 14k SPS Blue Life DE Halide. Each day it is lowered approx .25"

Under observation. If I get some good color up and coral growth, I'll be swapping out softies with the good stuff.

Still penty of room in there.
