I posted some pics/explinations of my new lighting system - Let me know what you think when you get a chance to scope it out!

I missed my surface skimmer too much. Even though the overflow alone skims surface water somewhat adequately, it still leaves a light film of scum on top. I figure the scum limits the degree of light that can penetrate into the tank to some extent. In addition, it can't be good for the water to have nasty chemical who-knows-what build up on the water's surface. So I put the surface skimmer back in, MJ600 and all, but this time I bypassed the coiled tube connecting it to the pump for a direct hook up. Tough to explain. See the skimmer back in full effect at the upper left of the pic! Now we've got crystal clear water from the top view too. This tank has gone back and forth from minimal components to gear heavy so many times already. I've decided the gear must stay. At this point, I'm more into doing what ever it takes to benefit the corals vs. my eyes. IMO, it still doesn't look bad though.

Yet another pic of my ORA Roscoe. Looks like it's doing exceptionally well. The colors are even more intense in real life. I swear it's turned more bluish purple since the extra light moved in.

Looks nice, is that a koralia 3 or a koralia 4 in the backround?

Thanks. It's a koralia 1 actually and a koralia nano directly underneath and to the left of it.

Here are 3 pics of the tank, showing varying degrees of light. No Photoshopping.

1) 150W 14,000K Coralife DE

2) 250W 20,000K XM DE

3) BOTH 150W 14,000K Coralife DE & 250W 20,000K XM DE

It's absolutely amazing to me how great this tank looks. (I skipped ahead a little) Did you start it two months ago? Is this the tank using Rapids Pro?

Picture #3 does show the best color variety. WOW wub.gif

On New Year's day, it'll be about 3mos since I first put water in the tank. I used cycled rock from my old tank to seed the system quickly. I'm glad you like it, but expect it to change QUICKLY as SPS start to invade. Tonight I picked up a couple of acro frags from "Your Reef" close by here in Roseville CA, which I believe is a sponsor of NR. One is a Cali Blue tort with amazing colors, fragged on site from it's parent colony. Another is called a "C-quarium Unknown," also fragged at the time of purchase. Tomorrow, pics will be posted to track progress. I also have 6 or 7 pieces coming in from Bluebastion in a couple of weeks. And there are still a few varieties of monti caps I'm still looking to pick up soon. To make room, many of the softies like the Hynophora, Torch, and Frogspawn will have to be deported back to the old BC14 from where they came! Hope the tank is still likable in it's early stages, since the frags must first encrust before they start to take off vertically.

And yes, this is using the Rapids Pro. The functionality of the whole thing took some getting used to at first, but it's been working perfectly for me so far - skimmer and all.

Pics of the two frags I picked up from Your Reef yesterday.

California Blue Tort $50.

The back side of it was faced down from the light. We shall see if it colors up and how fast.

C-quarium Unknown $35.
It has nice hues of teal, purple and blue. Camera can't capture all of the color.

Still can't believe how much these frags cost!@#! I need a friend in the coral business.

I know i have a problem, and I don't commute to work so I do in fact buy more frags than I do gas. What you don't see much are images of the back and sides of the tank, where there is still PLENTY of room to mount frags with enough room to grow out. This is the primary reason why I went with an ADA and built the rockscape with none of it touching glass on any side - so I can stock a crazy amount of corals!

Regardless, the time will come swiftly when I'll run out of room there too, so I've begun dreaming more seriously about my 260 gallon wonder tank. Most certainly that one will take months and months, if not one year of full planning. (MUCH LESS THAN THAT IF I HAD THE FUNDS TODAY THOUGH). With that one, I don't even know where to begin. However, there's so much knowledge from this online community that I'm sure some people here will have some influence in the final outcome. It definitely wouldn't be nano anymore though, but I'd like to stick around here if I could. happy.gif

Great idea with the direct connection of the maxijet + surface skimmer, but can you elaborate more, how was it done exactly? I dont really like look of the colied tube, and it seems like this new attachment method will work more effciently

Can you imagine what kind of lighting I would recommend for a 260 when I already put 844watts over a 40g. LoL, your hydro bill would be absolutely ridiculous! You would have to start charging for the public to see your tank just to be able to afford it!

LOL. Try me. I'm already thinking of running reflectorized tubes from the rooftop for direct sunlight and incorporating solar power to keep energy costs down. cool.gif

Took a pic just for you, Mazda. I used a spare elbow from one of my pumps to connect the surface skimmer outflow to the MJ600 intake. Clear tubing was used inside of the elbow to make the connection. If you look closely, you can see the clear gap in between the intake and the elbow. Come to think of it, you can also remove the elbow altogether and use clear tubing to connect directly to the intake, but you'd have to rotate the MJ 90º. I might actually try that so the MJ can hide better behind the rockscape. Thanks for helping me come up with the idea!

I just got an ada tank as well. Your thread has an incredible amount of replies so I dunno if anyone addressed this issue to you yet. But I was at aquaforest and was informed that the ada tanks aren't tempered and could be drilled.

No kidding!@#! I swear I asked them the same question and they told me I couldn't do it. I guess it's never too late. Which one did you end up getting? And will you be drilling it??? If so, who's gonna do it for you b/c I'm next in line...

well I have to haul the thing back to socal and get someone to do it for me there. I spoke to george lo while i was picking a friend's tank up and he said the bottom pane isn't tempered. He said you could certainly drill it but it would void your warranty and he did not recommend it.

But this explains why that rc guy were able to get his tank drilled? Im going to call again and double check before I drill the thing. The tank is a non-standard size so I dunno if you've heard of it. I was browsing the ada japan website and noticed that they have some funky sizes not advertised in the us market. Low and behold the lo's had it (pun not intended!). To get to the point though, it's 24x18x18.

Ooh that's the perfect size for my island. If I could do it again, I'd go with those dimensions. I wonder how 2 side by side pendants of different spectrum would look over a tank like that. It would be a much cleaner look for my setup. AND I could have a REAL SUMP and refugium below if I drill it. Hmmm. Something to think about. But wait, my wife won't let me drill through the granite counter tops so forget it. Anyhow, I'll watch out for your thread.

Did you get a new camera yet? From an earlier post I read someone recommending Canon Rebel XTi. They're on sale now for a little over 500. $589 with a stock lens.
I think it's a good deal for a camera like that unless you want to go with EBay.

But anyway, my point is that you can get control over your picture color if you get a camera with adjustable "white balance" settings.

OK. So I know it's not the most attractive system in the world, but if offers everything I've been hoping for in a filter - for only $200. I may want to swap the intake and return tubes to clear vs. blue. With this filter solution, the only components that will remain INSIDE the tank will be the Koralia 1, MJ1200, and the overflow unit. Much cleaner. BLACK would be my preference if I had a choice.

Obviously, the overflow will be exposed but the rest of the components will be hidden away inside the cabinet.

What do you think? Should I buy it? Comments would be appreciated.

This picture really doesn't do it justice. I, for once, think it's kind of cool looking when it's setup. It's see-through so you can look and know what's going on inside, yet it's tinted blue kind of like our Light setups. And, most importantly, it's all inclusive without being too bulky.
I also know that one of these days we'll figure out a way to DIY a Fuge into it. biggrin.gif

haha, sweet. can i be vice president? i dont want any other responsibilities other than going on hunting trips and shooting my fellow hunters. biggrin.gif

I just ordered mine today. Went to my LFS again yesterday to watch it in action. I think for the price its worth a try. If nothin else im sure you can make your $ back on eBay. I wish I didnt have to wait to set it up until next summer, but it will be such a hassle to have to tear it all down and move. i hope it works out for those of you who will be using it soon. theres a guy over on RC who was asking about it too. i told him about this thread and offered my advice. of course he got a lot a negative responses from people over there. my experience with most people on RC is that unless youre willing to spend hella money on every component of your system youre not doing it right. i remember when i started a thread asking about a Nova Extreme T5HO fixture I was thinking about. I made it clear that my lighting budget was about $250. They repeatedly told me that the Nova was no good and I should get a TEK or Aquatinic fixture. Even after repeated attempts to reiterate the fact that my budget would not accommodate those high dollar fixtures, I was then told that if i didnt have the funds to support his hobby maybe I should reconsider. WTF? that didnt help me at all. instead of getting real advice and help I basically got called out for not being financially capable of purchasing thousands of dollars worth of equipment. no one seems to stray very far from what everyone else is doing, which is kinda why i like to try something that hasnt really been tried before. someone has to be the guinea pig. and why i also do most of my posting here at nano-reef. its not full of a bunch of 200g+ owners who have an unlimited supply of money and think that if you cant ball like them your saltwater ambitions are unfounded. anyways, for those interested you can check his thread out here.

Go forth and prosper brave Rapids Pro purchasers. I look to join you in the near future!

I know this is a bit of a hijack, but it's relevant to all of us. Nano-reef community is awesome. I read the linked thread on RC-man, was it rough. There is about a million different ways to do the same thing and absolutely no reason to knock a man down for trying. All you need is patience and ingenuity to get things going and we'll make the Rapids work wink.gif .

Since then, I've gotten somewhat adjusted to the manual aperture/shutter settings of my old camera. But I've seen some very nice pics here on NR where white balance was tweeked. It'd be nice to have a new gadget to play with, but my top priority right now is corals!

how has the overflow been functioning? Your review is giving the sump vs this filter decision for my setup a good run. I gotta think now of ease of use and overall stability.

another forum had mentioned a downside of using a pump for the syphoning on the overflow. I believe he was worried that it would continue pumping... of course he was one of the "never used it but dont like it" types.
I first saw this unit for sale for 350,000 yen.. about 340 dollars! slap.gif

The overflow pump should continue pumping (that's why it has a return hose). There is no problem with using a pump to syphon the overflow except for one thing. And this is probably the only really weak point in the entire system. If this particular pump fails (breaks disconnects, etc.) the overflow will break, but since your sump pump is still on, it will cause all the water from the sump and the refill chamber to overflow into your tank. However, the likelihood of this happening is very, very low. If you're worried about this happening, I would suggest finding out what the statistical fail rate is for that particular pump (it's really heavy duty construction, IMO).

I already worked out several ways of doing it in my head, but I won't get to actually implementing it for some time. I'm just too busy with everything else right now. I could lay it out in a post if you'd like or just wait a little 'til I actually do it. smile.gif

Had some time to mess with the tank, since the grandparents were over. So I inverted the MJ600 to better hide it behind the rockscape. Much much happier with the result. ~The following 5 pics were taken with only the 20,000K light on.

Left Angle

Left Side FTS Torch gets 4 to 5 times as large as shown. In a couple of weeks, frogspawn, torch, red shrooms, will be moved to make room for SPS additions.

Gear Description

Front FTS MJ600 is no longer visible from the front.

ohmy.gif Bad news, I noticed about 4 or 5 flat worms slithering against the glass today - the rusty variety. Yikes. So I dosed the tank with Flatworm Exit. Man, that stuff works fast! LO and behold, within seconds after the normal dosage, 100+ of em were floating dead in the water. On top of that, the fish mistook the dead bodies as food! Added FRESH carbon and have been periodically rinsing out filter floss. So far corals and fish are acting normal EXCEPT some random zoas that are completely closed or only partially opened. It has been 3hrs so far and I have decided NOT to do a water change YET. I'd like to have more confidence that they have been eradicated before I do. Plus, instructions indicated that you must give the medication a chance to work. I am monitoring very closely however. Maybe sometime later tonight, I'll replace 25%.

biggrin.gif Good news is, I picked up a new addition to the tank (before I noticed the flatworms of course) and it doesn't seem bothered by a little toxic poison. In fact, it's polyps are wide open in this tank, where only a few would peek out at the LFS - and they've had it for over 2 weeks now. It's a non-photosynthetic Bali Blue Sea Fan. I asked for only a frag of it, and they were happy to snip off one of the branches. It still seems a little large to me, so I plan on doing some bonsai pruning tomorrow. The trimmings from this frag will be dispersed throughout the lower parts of the display. Hopefully, this coral brings a more natural element that has been a bit lacking.

FWE treatment was a success. So far no traces of flatworms and most importantly no loss of life. Things are looking great in the tank.

Changed 5Gal of water late last night with a new salt brand, SeaChem Reefsalt. It's loaded with minerals, but now my Calcium is testing off the chart at 540ppm. I expect that the high calcium usage of my tank will lower this quickly by the end of the day. I'm thinking I may no longer need to dose calcium for as long as I use this brand?

Placed pieces of the new Bali Blue Sea Fan throughout the tank. Will post pics of the new look later today.

3 things

1. you will notice that fwe does not kill off flatworms completely unless you start with a high dosage straight from the get go. surviving fws will develop an immunity and you will need to dose stronger and stronger to eradicate them.

2. bali seafan - looks like a blueberry gorgonian, so unless i'm wrong, its not going to survive long term. there has not been a single documented success story in keeping that species for longer than a few months.

3. seachem reefsalt - high borate, which is an impurity, may cause some issues in the long run. i never liked this salt so i ditched it as the livestock simply didn't look as happy as before.

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all three i'm speaking from experience, so hopefully you will not make the same mistake i did, or your story will be different and you'll have success in all 3.

I do believe that so I'm not counting on them being gone for long. However, I'm hoping I detected the issue early enough, where there weren't too many to kill. With that said, I did see AT LEAST 40 dead worms floating 30secs after the normal dosage. My tank got 30 drops of it to account for the addt'l sump volume. I did delay the water change for 9 hours after treatment, so hopefully that helped to kill off the heartier ones. May need to resort to more natural means and pick up a six line.

Right again. I read that the blueberry gorgonian also goes by the name of "Bali Blue Sea Fan," and that it has not been documented to live more than several months. Too late now. It's already in my tank, so I'll enjoy it while it lasts. IT'S SO BLUE. What a shame, but I'm glad I only asked for a small $15 clipping from the main coral.

I'll see how it goes with seachem. It's only been a day, but I like not having to dose so much calcium. Alkalinity alone is tough enough to keep up with. Thanks for the comments, ez. Very helpful.

They are adjusting to the light increase by pooping out excess zooxanthellae. This is a totally normal reaction to the light increase, and a sign they are adapting.

Alternately, it could just be regular old poop, but the texture looks like zooxanthellae snot.

Corals use the same orifice for ingesting food and excreting waste. So, perhaps it's just a natural process that's happening. Have you fed it recently?

On the other hand, it may be excreting something it doesn't like. Or, corals sometimes spew out their zooxanthellae. Just depends on the circumstances. Has it's color changed?

Thanks for the responses. Based on the recent color change from dull brown to pink, I'd say they are definitely adapting to the increased light in a good way.

On another note, I saw my blueberry gorgonian frags close their polyp extensions when I fed the tank cyclops, as if they were pulling in the food. Somewhat like xenia, but the extensions don't close and open at the same time - more like individual tentacle motions. Looks interesting. They don't behave that way normally. Not keeping my hopes up, but I'm hoping that means they're eating. If these guys live for at least 3-4 months, I'll be happy.

Lastly, I'm thinking about getting a six line as a natural predator to flatworms. Will it get along well with my 2 clowns and firefish?

Sixlines can get pretty bossy... I got a Longfin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis) for flatworm extinction - did an awesome job, and I found it was less aggressive then a sixline.

That longfin is a very attractive fish. My only concern is adding a larger fish to my 25G tank with 3 other occupants. I gotta do what I gotta do though, so I'll definitely think about it. Perhaps the sixline will not have much of a say for territory considering the other guys have established themselves over the last 3mos?

As for the borate in the Seachem salt; they have changed their recipe and it is now almost un-detectable. I found this info on zeovit.com in case you were wondering. I haven't checked your thread in a week or so, it is coming along awesome PU!
Thanks for the info Gixxer. Makes me feel more confident considering I was going to keep using it anyway. I like it's ability to maintain higher alkalinity and calcium levels. Since I've started using it, I've only had to dose alk and not as much of it. Oh, for anyone interested, I'm still keeping up with my dosing log. It's forced me to keep my levels always in check. I highly recommend everyone to use a similar spreadsheet. Feel free to copy it (a google email address is required to see it):

Clowns can be finicky. They used to host the hammer and have since decided it wasn't good enough. And neither has had interest in the torch or frogspawn. Try something else perhaps? One of my clowns likes burying it's face and body in my large patch of pink zoas (although they could be palys). That's where it sleeps, with it's two eyes peeping out. I'll take a pic one day.
