Well my CAD 12g was supposed to be here by now. I emailed fishtanksdirect who I purchased from and they told me that It was shipped from CAD directly, and is on its way back to CAD due to UPS damaging it in transit.

We all know what ups is going to do with it. Why doesn't CAD find a better way to package these tanks? It seems like a waste to have all of these tanks get broken all the time.

Hopefully Ill have mine tomorrow
NaClH2Ofreak
Hmm...their called "Fish Tanks Direct" but they dont ship direct? The tank is drop shipped from Cad? Weird.

Anyways, Cad use to use DHL and they broke probably 3 tanks for every one that they got delivered in one piece. Now UPS is having the same problem. Do ya think Eddie should re-think his packing plan? I can't imagine these shipping companies paying Eddie for ALL these broken tanks. Maybe they are <shrug>, who knows. What I do know is that it is EXTREMELY annoying to the customer. I know, it took them 3 tries to get a 39gal sig tank to me. I ended up having to pay to have UPS ship me the tank overnight in order to get it here in one piece. The total shipping bill was about $300 and Eddy had me split it with him. Still not sure that was the right thing to do.

you coulda rented a car and made a feild trip of it for $300
NaClH2Ofreak
Ya, that would have been fun. Only problem is that it would have probably cost a lot more than $300 since I live in Oregon and Eddy is in The Bronx, NY.

don't they ship insured? that way when this does happen, no one looses money? would make sense...

anyway i am downgrading to a CAD 12g and ordered it today. plan on getting the 150w 2x14w T5 actinic pendant from aquatraders for $99. so for $250 i'll have a nice little tank. plan on putting my Vortech MP 10 on it as well as my Ac Jr. also using my grey sand too...

I would assume they do ship insured, however if this happens alot, which it must, why would any freight company like ups want to ship for them, because for what insurance costs, pennies on the dollar, it would be stupid for ups to keep doing it as it would take them a long time to make all of that lost money back.

I am using a reefkeeper lite, mp10 and stock lighting on my tank.

Another problem I found was that the light fixture just wouldn't fit snugly on the top of the tank. The acrylic legs support seemed kind of flimsy for such a big fixture. And wouldn't you know it...I had trouble fitting the leg support into the fixture's rubber slot, and the thing broke when I forced it in. So I had to order another one. Ugh.

Hopefully these get a redesign. The only thing keeping these heavy lights from falling into tank is the thin, keyed top-part of those acrylic legs.

I didn't know it, but after 8 months, mine became very brittle and cracked at the interface between the leg and light. I'm very lucky someone was physically holding the lights when it decided to go. Otherwise 30lbs of falling lights would have destroyed the tank, and most of my living room.

I now keep an extra pair of legs and check mine periodically.

bdesper311
They do ship insured, unfortunatly, I found this out this past week when my 39 sig came... in a ton of shattered glass. Even though it sucks it broke, Eddie had another one ready to ship the next day. Yes, they do need to fix their shipping packaging, but at least their customer servie is the best I have ever delt with. By the way, new tank Wednesday (if not broke again)!!!
amertz03
Does anyone know where I might be able to find a 5 gallon CAD system. I wasn't sure if they were still being made or not or if they could be specially made??
121a
contact them, they might be able to whip one up for you.

jeez guys now i'm worried about my tank hope she gets here in one piece.

good point about UPS shipping for them after all these accidents. they should be double boxed, one large box with peanuts surrounding a box containing the bubble wrapped tank. That is how i would ship a tank. i'm sure most would rather pay a few extra $'s for the packing materials so the tank would arrive in one piece.
dsn112
Eddie is really good. I got my second shipment this time overnighted by fedex and it is perfect. Already passed the water test!

The legs on the light are a little scary but oh well. Most likely I will replace it with LEDs when they come down in price anyway.

Now just waiting for a friend to build me a stand since there really isn't anything available for the 12g

Live rock and Live sand are in buckets with a powerhead too. Got 10g of rodi waiting for my DD H20cean to show up today. Got my reefkeeper lite and vortech mp10 ready.

So now its just a waiting game. Stand should be built by Wed, stain it by Friday. Hoping to start the cycle this weekend,

I'm curious as to the legs issue. With some slight modification my light fixture has been very stable, but I have an early prototype. I can see the different legs on CADLight's website (the 12g tank pic on the 'Nano Tanks' page is mine, the other 'fuge display pic shows what I assume is the current lighting setup).

I've got Cadlights' new Bubble-Magus skimmer up and running:

More pics of the skimmer are up on my signature thread. Take a look!
c_k_kuehne
Could someone with a new 12g give me an exact length measurement. I know it says 15" but is that really 14 7/8" or 15 1/8" etc....

Just need an exact outside measurement of the length.

Thank you in advance
dsn112
The tank it self is 15" long. The tank sits on a glass base that adds a half inch per side so if your talking about footprint its 16"
121a
WHAT??? I'm apparently getting mine today, or at least FedEx tracking says so!!! YAY! I'll measure it up if it is in one piece.

got the tank in one piece and what a bueaty she is. super sexy! have to water test tomorrow and hopefully that goes well. biggrin.gif

Neat -- apparently a new cadlights pro 39g version is going to be available in November: the "Pro X-1"... Link

Looks like they've upgraded the skimmer (Bubble-Magus Pinwheel) and the return pump (1000gph), at least....

very interested to see what they're up to!

Eddie set me up with all the upgrades on the new package back when I bought my 39pro in Sept. He wanted me to give it all a try and see what I think. The upgraded pump that he sent me was really big and it used a LOT of watts and heated up a lot so I changed that out to a Rio 20HF.
The Bubble-Magus skimmer is awesome! I liked the skimmer that came with the system but the new one is very very nice. It is super easy to adjust as well.

gillundr
Here is the pump they were trying in September not sure if it's the one they are going to use or if they changed.

Like I said, it was too big for what I wanted to do in that chamber, I put a reactor in there too so I switch to the Rio 20HF. It needs to be dialed back a little bit with a valve because the overflow will only handle 1000gph. But it is smaller and uses less electricity and doesn't heat up.
You can see with the bigger pump I wouldn't be able to fit all this in there lol.

awbowden
Just thought I'd post a pic of tank that has been running for a few months now. Sorry about the quality, it's just a little, cheap point and click. Actinics only:

Maybe tomorrow I will try and snap some better shots with the halide on.

I don't like the skimmer so I'm definately going to try and get the upgraded one. Does anybody have a suggestion for a silent pump to replace the stock return one? Heat is not an issue. Besides that I love the tank and love picking up new frags. I just wish I could find more zoa's and ricordea locally.

Thanks.
Rehype
Looks great!Love the aquascaping
gillundr
Nice looking tank. I'm not sure how loud the original pump is because I got the upgraded one but then never tried that one. The Rio 20HF isn't loud at all as long as you use the suction cups that come with it and you make sure it's not touching the sides of the sump. I have been very happy with it so far. It uses a lot less electricity as well. You do need to put a valve on it though because it's too fast for the overflow.
Here are a couple of shots I got the other day. They are sort of bad quality as well. Old cheap camera and the curtains were open so there is reflections from the window and I hadn't cleaned the sides for a couple of days but at least you can see a bit lol.

My mystery wrasse, bad pic I had to use the flash or else he blurs because he never stops swimming lol.

Lunch time for the clowns

A lot of the sps isn't where I'm keeping it. Some of it I just moved in there from my frag tank to see how it would do under these lights. So far so good. I think this weekend I will put some of my nicer frags in there. I wasn't sure how well the 150w light would do, but it seems to do just fine and things are holding color pretty good for me so far so maybe this weekend I'll put in some nice torts and stuff and try that for a bit. I'm also feeling like I'm not all that happy with the rock work and have been thinking a lot about re doing the aquascape. I'm not for sure though lol it's a lot of work, but it might pay off because I'll be happier with it in the end. Although I always have trouble getting it to look the way I want it to. I may have to use a bunch of epoxy and rods or something to get it they way I really want. We'll see, it's not going anywhere lol.

I do like your set up awbowden. Looking great.
gillundr
Thought I would throw a couple of these pics in, they are a couple of my favorites in this tank so far.

and a pic of a Sun I have in my frag tank he's actually growing on a live oyster. I nursed him back from almost nothing when I got him. Actually somebody just gave me another "project" suncoral so we'll see how that one does next. People see these and think they look so beautiful then don't realize they require a lot of work. You have to feed each head.

and since I'm throwing in a pic from another tank I thought I would put this one in there too. This is a YWG and tiger pistol shrimp in my JBJ picotope.

Nice 12g I hope to order either that or the 9g before thanksgiving.

My hinges are starting to rust and it's just too damp down there so I thought I would install some computer fans in the stand to create some air circulation through there. I made one computer fan suck air from outside the stand and the other fan blows the air from inside the stand out. So now there is a good flow of air through the stand and it made a really big difference. You can really tell it's much dryer down there when you open the doors. I put in these plastic covers to try to make it look a little more professional on the outside. I also used silicone around the inside where the hole was cut so the bare particle board of the stand wouldn't be subjected to water and causing problems with the wood swelling and falling apart. I think it came out really good. Another pro is it dropped my tank temp 1.5 degrees so that was a nice little plus.

Rehype
That is a very awesome mod. You did a a really great job! I may have to copy your idea since i will probably have to worry about the same issue with having water stored in the cabinet. Are the fans quiet?
bear-hugs
That refugium light is crazy looking but i am sure you probably have something really cool growing in there with all that light. gillund, what are those 2 cylinders in your sump?
gillundr
The little fans make no noise at all. The cylinders are reactors. One is for carbon and the other is for GFO. The light is for growing Chaeto. It works a LOT better than the light that came with the system plus I just put one of those High Efficiency screw in CF bulbs that use very little power and don't get hot.
c_k_kuehne
I just ordered a CADlights tank can I join the cool kids cool.gif

Today I ordered a CADlights 9 gallon tank only --- does it still count ???

I have a Eco-Lamps KR-91 14" LED setup that should fit right nicely over top of it.

My plan is to drill with corner overflow and drill the back for a return. 2.5 gallon sump with media chamber and external pump. MP10 for main current. I am also planning on having a JBJ Picotope sitting on the stand just above and behind the CADlights for a display refugium. That will also be drilled like the CADlights but I will have the outflow from the picotope drain into the CADlights tank so any pods and what not get a straight shot to the display without going through a pump. Well thats the plan for now anyway (subject to change -- of course). My goal is to have everything up and running sometime early Jan.

So far I have the KR91 lights and the stand basically built. Will need to finish the stand once the tanks arrive.

I ordered the CADlights today and will order the picotope plus some bulkheads and what not this weekend.
gillundr
That sounds VERY ambitious, something I would do lol. Double check the picotope glass may be tempered. Be sure to take pictures and keep us posted, that sounds really cool. Last but not least GRATS on the new CAD. I have to go into NYC later this week, and am trying to talk my wife into letting me get another tank from them. I may have to wait though, sort of have a few other projects in the works that need to be finished up so I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. Just finished my "monthly" maintenance on my CAD tonight. That feels good, and the tank looks better than ever. It's really coming into its own now. I need to do the frag tank tomorrow though and that will be a pain. My first water change of the month always marks my big maintenance "todo". Replace reactor media, clean pumps, all the details that get overlooked the rest of the month. Nice to have it done, but a pain to do when you have a few tanks going.

Ordered a Cadlights 12g yesterday from Fishtanksdirect.

Been lurking for a little bit and decided that it would be a fun project, soon-to-be hobby.

Very informative website and forum. Can't wait to start a build thread.

What skimmers are people using on their 39 signature's?

I have some sorta Coralife on there now and my wife has finally put her foot down on the amount of noise it makes...plus it's very touchy. I actually had to rig up a water sensor to my aqua controller to shut it down before it overflows..

I'm very curious to hear what you all are hanging on the back.

Thanks.

the euro-reef is obviously a better product, but you're paying a fair amount for it. what'd you do with your stock skimmer?

I installed the original skimmer, but was rather annoyed that I had to prop it up to get it at the right height. I then discovered that the plastic part where the airline connects was molded incorrectly. It took the company a good long time to get me a replacement. By that time I'd picked up another skimmer.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that whenever I can swap out a piece of stock cadlights equipment, I will. What didn't come broken usually broke shortly there after. (light stands, skimmer, silicon all over the glass, rusty fuge light, dodgy canopy clips).

Just my milage. Yours may vary.

I was pleasantly surprised by a Saturday delivery of my CADlights 9 gallon (tank only).

The tank arrived in what looked like bullet proof packaging and was delivered by FedX. The outer box was lined with thick press-board panels and foam sheets. Since I am going to drill it and void the warranty I figured I might want to water test it first.

I just wipe my down with a damp cloth. Do you have something bubbling underneath that may be causing spray? I've cut out pieces of stiff filter floss and installed them where water is falling (overflows, skimmer return). It keeps the noise down and reduces the amount of spray I find.
