Wouldn't the design of the metal halide reflectors with the sides open leak uv rays into the tank? Or is hqi Metal Halide lighting directional and ony penetrates down from where the bulb is placed?

as long as you have a peice of tempered glass between th bulb and tank, you'll be fine.
