There are no absolute truths. It's depending on bioload.

Sander piccolo is a small airdriven and inexpensive skimmer, works fair enogh. I'm using this skimmer.

Check nanotuners they have a special made skimmer for the nanocube. Expensive but fits perfect.

There are no absolute truths.

um ok. so all the tests done that prove this and the owner of this site put that article up when it might not be true ? a nano can never have a bioload large enough to make a skimmer worth depleting trace elements and other stuff that is needed to have a stable reef tank. you would have to have larger species of fish which cant be in a nano to begin with. even stocked heavy with smaller fish it would never amount to what larger fish waste adds up to. this is why skimmers are used in bigger systems because they have larger fish which have alot of waste.

Your statement are that "skimmer aren't good for a nano". I think this is a little to hard statement.

Skimmerless is not the only way to do a nano. It's one way, but not the only.

pitbull, the one absolute I can think of in this hobby is that there are no absolutes. If you are taking an article on this site as the gospel you might want to rethink your approach to reefing. I have run nanos from 2.5 gallon up to 20 gallon and currently a system a little larger than a nano and have a 120 in process. There is no doubt in my mind that my tanks have always looked better with a skimmer.

Charlie, depending on the size of your tank you have a lot of options. A little piccolo skimmer can work fine on a smaller tank and is really cheap. You can find plans on the interent to make one out of a pepsi bottle or coke if you swing that way. I have used a CPR BakPak ($100 used) that I felt was very effective as well. I also liked my Coralife Super Skimmer, a good option if you have a big enough sump for it but will also hang on the back of the tank. This one runs a little less than $100 new used maybe $60. I'm running a ASM now, it's a little pricier and is sump only.

Nanotuners carriers skimmers made buy Sapphire Aquatics. You may want to check out there site to see the other products that Sapphire Aquatics has to offer, such as the HOB Refugium with skimmer. right now the 18" version is the only one available but there will be a 14" version being release shortly that fits the NC12.

im not only taking it from one aricle. im saying this from my own expereience. theres been many tests done years ago and nothings changed about how skimmers work so they still do the same thing. why do you use live rocks when someone first told you they were a good thing? probably because someone told you that already had experience and you listened because they read it in an article. well christopher marks the owner of this site wrote that article so your saying he just made it up then? do what you want guys but anyone who knows and has experience knows this is the truth. so good luck on keeping a stable system.

pitbull, I don't want to get into a peeing match with you and I don't want to say someone doesn't know what theya re talking about. You gave an absolute, I'm just saying there are differnt ways and they all work. I have run both with and without skimmers and both have worked well. The fact that you throw out Chris Marks name to me is funny. He has a really nice site, but is a hobbiest like you and I. i confess I don't know what career path he has taken since he started this site in high school or college or whatever it was. Maybe he is a marine biologist or something. I'm just saying that since I have been caring for reefs over the last 5 or so years I have chatted with many hobbiests and "experts" more go the skimmer route than not. I can also tell you this, my personal opinion is that on this site more than any other there tends to be more reeefer not in the know that dish out information that is nothing more than recycled gargbage they picked up here. I'm not saying your skimmer info is that as i think it's a perfectly fair way to care for a nano, but it's just an observation in regards to this site. Thats why I'm against talking in absolutes...it was just your opiniion based on what you belive and what some others have said...you just leave out that others, just as many or more, feel the other way.
