Nano-Reef.com Forums > Miscellaneous > Archives > Pico Reef Contest

Ebn
FW or whatever, I'm up for one as long as it's something that I have laying around.

I have a 3.5 gallon starfire that will be getting here in about 5 weeks if that helps. wink.gif
Maeda
Adin will own the FW contest. sleep.gif

I have this 8g tank laying around......

we should have no equiptment visable contest~! That way it forces everyone to come up with new neat solutions.

maybe an automation contest?

cannister filter contest?
BlackOcean
Blah...FW. mad.gif Fraggle we will start our own contest. wink.gif

I'm hoping we can have something set by this summer, but I'm not 100% sure. It will most likely be a 6 month contest, similar to the past ones.

Thanks for your interest. smile.gif

Well that's cool, I will try to hold off setting up something, Couple definitive hints soon would be great so I can scratch up the $$ to start purchasing. Anything I can do to help I am also willing.
Helfrichs Chick
I would be down for a coffe pot too.

I've been thinking about doing a 15L&S (Long & Short) contest. I could probably get a nice group buy going through Glass Cages.

Just a little teaser! smile.gif

DudE31

Cool. Discuss it on your own website! tongue.gif

ANYWAYS...

FW contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to set one up anyway, so lets get it on.
fewskillz
I'm down for FW or coffee pot. I'm participating either way this time. I didn't have room for a 10 gallon last fall, it was just crappy timing. But I can make room for a coffee pot or a nano fw. I'm down.

Freshwater... Not so much. Coffee pot..... uhh... sorry I thought it was a joke..lol
I guess I am here for nano-reefs.... not nano-lakes.

Freshwater…Although we discuss other systems like large marine and freshwater setups, I agree, this is Nano-Reef.com.

Coffe pot…I’d actually prefer that it be more open, like any household item (not just limited to coffee pots). It might be interesting to see what people come up with.

However, there are a number of other potentially good contest ideas that have also been proposed (like specific biotypes or having budget limits). Any other suggestions?
Maeda
I built my first 5.5 aga for 100$ with livestock...

I'd like to see a similar contest.

Unlimited mods and tank size but you only get 100$ to spend.
or possibly an equiptment fund cap, and livestock is up to you( we dont need a contest dedicated to brown palys, and plain purple shrooms).

It would have to be on the honor system, but we should get the option of disqualifying people with a 100% BS vote.

or better yet... deserted island nano contest
nano must run without being plugged into a 110v 15a/20a circuit. discuss.
SbCaes
I like maeda's idea for a deserted nano

i like that
seabass
Oxygen depletion would probably be an issue. I’m having difficulty imagining a true reef without any power; however, I suppose that you could run something on batteries. A battery powered (or solar powered) pico contest might lead to some really innovative solutions.

I'm not sure that absolutely no power is possible. If it is, it would have to have tons of surface area like a tide pool (maybe bare bottom too). However, I think that working within limits is also interesting (maybe like a cap of 25W of total AC power).
Maeda
It would be very hard, but I have a few suggestions to think about that would work.

Lithium Ion batteries on solar chargers.

Pedal power on a battery smile.gif

Gas power?

Temperate cold water(for those of us on/near the coasts)?
adinsxq
time to put the kitty to work

fraggle rockette
solar powered is def interesting, but might have heat issues... solar powered fan too! lol. i'm already thinking about this one happy.gif

definately need a budget cap tho, if not just for us as partially-claiming-to-be-sane individuals and for our other tanks sakes as well tongue.gif
crrichey
I would be up for household items (coffee pot is too restricting).
ezcompany
can we keep this familiar, not a high school science project! i'm mentally challenged so pls understand

I have to agree, I know some people are looking for the next CRAZY thing, I am down with the format that has been in place.... custom and stock ......
Can we have another hint already wacko.gif
fraggle rockette
the group buy half 15g sounds pretty cool to me now actually... biggrin.gif but i dont knowhow we'd get tanks to those not in socal sleep.gif

That will earn you a sit in the electric chair here in Texas!!!

I'm gonna throw out the idea of a 1watt or less tank (lighting). Under 30g and not just FOWLR.
Matty1124
less then 1w of light what would that be exactly? 1 LED? and what could you keep 1 zoa?
crrichey
Mushrooms, featherdusters, some sponge species, plenty of different invet species, fish, liverock, sea fans, sun corals, and possibly a couple soft coral species. It totally doable..
Chebon
I vote for a non-photosynthetic <10G or <5G.

I do have an old blender with a huge glass pitcher and an extra 1/2" bulkhead fitting...

One thing to keep in mind is that you can enter just about anything in the open category (battery powered, coffee pot, 1W per gallon, cold water, etc); although I think that it is interesting to compare various solutions to the same restriction.
ReadyReefer
i am new here but like the idea of a contest. i think a power cap idea would come up with some intersesting solutions. you could say have all power supplied by 6 AA bateries or something like that
Weetabix7
I'd be interested in a prop tank contest or a coffee pot type thing.
jenlovesty
What about a Mac aquarium contest?

Best DIY equip that benefits the hobby.

New nano skimmer, Cal reactor, etc.. designs? Cooling solutions...

Would have to be non-ghetto, but something easy enough for most to accomplish.
