Okay, well the tank is still under assembly but want to get in on the contest as well. I'll have a pic posted tomorrow.

The entire tank's dimensions are 48x12x8 with a built in filtration/refugium. The available display volume is 11.29 gallon and sump/refugium can hold a max of 5.39 gallons. These volumes are based on actual water dimensions as the tank is built out of 3/8". I'll post some measurement pictures when the tank is finished but for now, here's a CAD rendering of what to expect. I figured I'd try to do something never seen before so here is my 4 foot long tank; oh and by the way it will be wall mounted! Stay tuned for actual pics!

WoW Incredible All In One Design! It's a 4 Footer!
seabass
You should have added a CAD drink in your rendering. smile.gif

Wall mounted (not on a shelf)?
shao-lin nano
Sounds like it'll be hard to work behind the tank. Guess you won't have to though since it's not deep.

Any idea on lighting options?
calvin415
Just to clarify, yes it will be on a shelf not mounted directly to the wall... smile.gif

It won't be difficult to work on the tank at all as the black part of the false wall will be removable so I can see directly into the sump if I need to. biggrin.gif Each each end will spill over and go through a HOB filter cartridge before going through refugiums (again one for each end) and then the return pump will be located in the middle. The pump will feed a return manifold of 6 which will return the water 1" above the bottom of the tank. The returns are angled via loclines, bouncing the water off the display panels creating random flow throughout. The only maintenance should be to replace the filter cartidges which will also handle my carbon. smile.gif

Lighting will be a dual bulb VHO setup which should be more than enough for the zoo's, ric's and occasional LPS planned. biggrin.gif
Nevr
holy cow thats a sweet tank.
Rene
Wow, that could be very very nice. I am loving these shallow tanks!

Calvin, get a picture of your partially completed tank with a beverage in it today so you don't get DQd!

I think the entry pic thing is to prove no one started early, so I don't know if a drawing will cut it. I could be wrong.
calvin415
Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Don't worry I will be taking the drink picture tonight. smile.gif
calvin415
Okay, so I got off work a little early... The tank is far from done but here are my entry pictures...

And with cover removed...

Here's the dimension pics...

If you do the math (or I'll do it for you) the interior dimensions are 47.25x11x7.125=16.03125 gallons (don't forget to subtract 3/4" for acrylic)
The sump/refugium (outside) dimensions are 36x5.25x7.125=5.829545454 gallons

So that makes:
Display area = 16.03125-5.82954=10.2017 gallons
Sump = 5.12784 gallons (minus acrylic width of 3/8 and 1/8 black)

And here is a couple videos walk arounds. wink.gif

LOL! Please don't give up, the tank only holds the corals... The contest isn't about the tank, it's about what's in the tank and how well everything grows. smile.gif

Hey my friend!!! Glad to see you here! You're gonna have to come over when it's all done and help me plan the rock scape! I've got about 45 lbs of rock in the basement just begging to be broken up and put in this tank. biggrin.gif
seabass
That will be a fun tank to play with (essentially a five foot long, six inch channel). I like it.
RayWhisperer
That's a really nice design. Good luck.

Exactly! I was originally going to do a smaller tank and 8 ft long but decided I didn't want to buy more acrylic (I already had this in the garage.) biggrin.gif

Thanks!

I'm finishing some of the details but the tank is all polished up and really starting to take shape! Just need to finish the filtration work (filter pad holder) and it will be ready for a water test! I hope I have enough flow!!! fingersx01.gif
calvin415
Well, I just need to let it cure just a little longer before I do a water/flow test... Here's some more pics:

Just the tank...

Me too! Unfortunately it will take even longer now...

Tonight I did my water test and it holds great! Now for the bad news... Too much piping, and not enough water pressure. The flow was so low that I couldn't even feel the water coming out. To fix this I changed the pump to run 3 ports (one side) instead of all 6 and now I need to get another pump to run the other side (another week to get here sad.gif ).

Here's some pics with water and video of the ripples with 3 ports

wow calvin!! looking good... i was wondering about the pump.

how much does that bad boy weigh? you anticipate any problems?

as far as lighting... what are you thinking? i've heard of long tanks using light movers... are you going to do something like that? Or like, bunch of t5s or something?

awesome tank! Truely Unique. I love it. Following along.

Yeah, I thought 370 gph would be enough, I mean that's 60 GPH per port but I guess the piping was too much, it felt like 2 GPH. Not even a ripple and I couldn't feel a think coming out of them.

The tank empty weighs about 30lbs??? So I estimate the tank to weigh about 200 lbs max! I'll be using 3 MAX Brackets which can hold 500lbs each so 200lbs on a 1500lbs capacity shelf should be cake. Plus it will be on an exterior wall (2x6) so I should have nothing to worry about.

For lighting I'm planning on a pair of VHO's, I would rather have T-5's but I've already got the ballast and endcaps so I better use what I've got. I'll build an acylic canopy sometime this week for the lights to mount in.

holy sh!t that tank is awesome! i'm gonna be following this for sure...

hehe, why not use a 48" sunpod for lighting cool.gif. you might be able to keep a few things alive with that wink.gif lol

and i'm serious, too

Thanks for the compliment! As for the light, I don't need anything that intense... The tank is shallow and VHO's should be more than enough.

LOL! I wish; actually I don't really care who wins this just gives me an excuse to tinker with some ideas in my head... smile.gif

Thanks for the comments everyone!
Charlie97L
calvin, i'm sure you thought of this, but given the odd shape of your tank, are you going to use a sheet of foam underneath to help with the weight? i'm assuming you're putting it on an actual shelf, rather than the brackets.
calvin415
Good question Charlie, I will be placing the tank directly on the shelf (which will be mounted to the brackets). With a tank this small and acrylic so thick, I don't see any need or benefit of foam.
travisurfer
looks awesome i think you have this category wrapped up if you stock it right wink.gif

Well stocking it right is the plan... Or at least my opinion of stocking it. The 2nd pump should be here tomorrow so we'll see how things run at that time... I haven't had time to do anything else for this tank, just been working on finishing sumps for others.

Thanks for all the feed back folks, I'll take some more pics tomorrow provided the pump makes it here on time (blizzard moving in tonight sad.gif )...

Thanks guys! Well it looks like my pump won't be here until tomorrow... sad.gif 30-40 mph winds and 12inches in the street so far and it's just getting started.

haha, when does anyone "need" halides for a nano? you know you WANT to wink.gif tongue.gif

OH! but fyi, coralife does make a super slim single t5 HO fixture that is only 2" wide. it would be a nice top-off for your long and slender tank design.
fifty50
looks awesome. will definitely keep an eye on this thread.

Bumber about the weather, It's sunny, clear skies and in the 70's over here.

oh man, that is more snow than ive seen in the past four years combined........ but ive seen about 10 times that amount in rain! go pacific northwest!!!!

wow! omgomgomg.gif this tank is so great!! You should market these puppies. I'll buy. dancingnaughty.gif

That *is* the coolest tank I've ever seen. I will totally build one like that when I can afford it, only multiply the volume by 10 or so.. Extremely cool!

Wow, I love the beach.
