andykee
Nice!!! That is a HUUUGE overflow though. Isn't having a Ca and Kalk reactor overkill? I'm sure I'm wrong, but can you explain that to me??? Link to comment
lgreen
Water in Idaho is weird. A lot of people I know in this area who have calcium reactors have also had to add a Kalk Reactor to keep their pH up. I am assuming I will have the same thing happen. You just have to balance them out so that you aren't overdoing it. Link to comment
andykee
oh, cool, so it is an idaho problem then?!? Link to comment

big0boi721
This is awesome. This is the exact tank I want to do when I save up enough money. Now I have what looks to be a great reference. Great looking tank man!!! If you don't mind, how much did the tank/stand cost in total? Link to comment
lgreen
Thanks for the comments. The tank was like $220-250 (I don't remember) and the stand was also like $220-250. So probably about $500. The only thing that sucked was that none of the stores in my area (since they all go through central pet) could get a black 58g reef ready. So mine is actually a cherry wood one, and I painted the frames w/ black laquere. Link to comment
lgreen
Filtration: Remote Plenum (meaning, not in main tank) There is a lot of controversy over plenums. However after doing a lot of reading, I have found that if you set them up correctly, none of the claims made by those anti-plenum people are necessarily true. I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about how to set it up correctly. Everything you need to know is in this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/sept2002/feature.htm I will point out a few very important things though. The plenum (dead) space below the sand needs to be no less (and really no more) than 1" tall. Usin 3/4" pvc for your plenum supports will get you exactly 1". The sand bed above the plenum needs to be 4" deep to function correctly. Less than 3.75 and it won't work correctly. Finally, use a substrate 2-4mm in diameter. Any smaller, it will fall through, and bigger, and it will collect debry and clog up. Caribsea Special Grade Reef Sand is the pefect size. Here is one set of instructions that you can use to build a plenum: http://www.garf.org/bulletproofreef/plenum.html As you can see in the pics below, mine is the same idea, but I didn't connect the pvc support frame together with fittings. Here are pics from my assembly process: Link to comment
lgreen
Plenum Installed Yes, the sump is very full, but I haven't added the rock to the main tank, installed the return pump, or the skimmer yet. I will take some water out when I do that. First FTS: Still cloudy! I didn't think using only Arag-Alive would make it cloudy, but it still did. Interesting. Moving rock from trashcan to tank will have to wait tell tommorow I guess. Filtration Continued: Euro Reef 6-2+ w/ sedra 5000 Link to comment

supernip
Firefishes have a tendency to form a pecking order or have long drawn out fights. Please refer to your ultimate fish guide. p.s. Please add a fungia to your tank. Link to comment
lgreen
Dude wht happeend to ur old tank? Long boring story. Reading the end of my old thread will probably give you an idea. All that is important is that it is up running and turning out really awesome. Link to comment
steelhealr
Wow...I think I'm in the wrong job. Can you get a clearer shot of the plenum l? SH Link to comment
lgreen
Steelhealr, I'm not sure I understand. The plenum is burried under 4" of sand. Or do you mean a clearer shot of the actuall plenum (before I installed it)? Link to comment
danskim
Isn't there supposed to be a fine nylon screen on top of the egg crate? Link to comment
lgreen
Yes. There is, it is just kind of hard to see: I also covered it in that black plastic mesh stuff, but didn't take a picture of it Going to add the rock in a few minutes. Chiller will be here friday. Link to comment
danskim
Haha ok, because I was confused... No mesh would have meant there was no reason to have put all that below the sand in the first place! Link to comment
Travis
Why is there so much water in the sump? I would think that when the pumps turn off, there would be a little spilling over in the sump. Link to comment
Cesar
Oh man can't wait to see this develop Lgreen. Link to comment
