I got everything for $160, and he threw in a master test kit, a few small heaters, a really nice power center, and all kinds of goodies like that. It's been fully set up for around a month. keydiver
thanks AM, FW planted tanks are a nice contrast to SW. I find myself drawn to macroalgae more than anything...my unhealthy obsession with aquatic plants Link to comment

keydiver
I've noticed some odd small worms all over my tank. I haven't seen any damage from them yet, but they're really small and they have little burrows out of detritus on my driftwood. I was thinking the might be microworms, but any other thoughts? 2. I'm getting a really thick film on the surface of my water, probably because my system in completely submerged, and there's no surface skimming because I have a herbie design. How should I get rid of it? I was thinking just add a powerhead for surface agitation, because the flow from my return isn't too much power, and I can't add any equipment that would dissipate the pressurized C02 in the water Advice would be awesome Link to comment

keydiver
KNano 240 or 425 True, I might just go with the 425. On a different note, has anybody heard of using heating coils to keep water flowing through the substrate? The tank's only been up for a month and I can already tell that mulm is building up Link to comment

When I had my FW planted system, all I did was get a decent starting substrate (I used EcoComplete with some fluorite) and allowed mulm to accumulate. Whenever I did waterchanges, I would lightly gravel vac the very first 1/2" of substrate, but never any deeper. Beyond that, I had aggressive amounts of light, added plenty of CO2 (checked with a drop-checker and controller), and dosed according to the EI method. Link to comment

Basically exactly what i'm doing. high tech setup with high light, about 3bps on the C02, but it's being controlled by a solenoid until I can get a pH monitor. I check it w/ a drop checker, and dose EI, doing a water change every week to reset the nutrients. Link to comment
